I just noticed in the pics that Meghan is wearing a fine gold necklace with 3 small stones on it. If this was a birth-day gift from Harry its very sweet. Bless.

Gth1234 · 09/05/2019 12:29

If Prince George is called Archie as a nickname (why??) then why on earth would you pick that name for your child?

EdtheBear · 09/05/2019 13:10

Hellsbells I believe the senior Royals don't travel together for exactly that reason.

However if William was King and abdicated for any reason the line of succession would go to Harry not down to George.

The current Queen was born into the position of Kings granddaughter but her Uncle abdicated so the thrown went to her Father.

LaurieMarlow · 09/05/2019 13:12

However if William was King and abdicated for any reason the line of succession would go to Harry not down to George.

I don’t think that’s true.

When the Queens uncle abdicated he had no issue. His brother was his heir. If he’d had a son that would have been different.

EdtheBear · 09/05/2019 13:14

But then did her Uncle have kids before he abdicated

EdtheBear · 09/05/2019 13:14

Sorry cross post

Bibijayne · 09/05/2019 13:16

Why are people being so mean about a baby? Not my name choice, but very cute. And the names clearly mean something to Harry and Meghan.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 09/05/2019 13:16

No the Uncle never had kids. It would go to George, that’s the whole point in being ‘second in line’ etc otherwise it would be Charles, William, Harry, George.....

QueenBlueberries · 09/05/2019 13:17

I think the name is fine, I like Archie as a name, I like Harrison for a name, but I am not sure about a name for a member of the Royals. I am from Canada and back home (and in the US) there is a very famous and hugely popular 80s comics character called Archie, he has red hair, he is the butt of all jokes, a bit of an idiot. The jokes on my FB account from my Canadian and American friends keep on coming. www.bleedingcool.com/2019/05/08/prince-archie-comic/

Twaddle

The annotated list below covers the first part of this line of succession, being limited to descendants of the sons of George V, Elizabeth II's grandfather. The order of the first eighteen numbered in the list is given on the official website of the British Monarchy;[1] other list numbers and exclusions are explained by annotations (Notes and sources below) and footnotes. People named in italics are unnumbered either because they are deceased or because sources report them to be excluded from the succession.

@EdTheBear - no, Edward VIII did not have any children whatsoever.

IAmTheChosenOne · 09/05/2019 13:26

@EdTheBear Hellsbells I believe the senior Royals don't travel together for exactly that reason.

Diana put paid to that - the Wales all travelled together - as do the Cambridges. They go on the same planes to get to foreign tours.

Gigglinghysterically · 09/05/2019 13:39

Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windor's title is Master.

I really like his forenames.

Noobcrumble · 09/05/2019 13:51

You don’t need to be convinced. He’s not your kid. Don’t worry about it.

Couldn’t agree more.

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 09/05/2019 13:51

I'm not keen. To me its a dogs name and I think using a diminutive as a given name is tacky as anything. But my opinion doesn't matter as he isn't my child nor is he my business. He is, however, adorable and most importantly healthy.

kenandbarbie · 09/05/2019 13:52

What happens if, for example, Charles dies before being King. Is William King then or does it go to whoever is next oldest brother after Charles (Andrew/Edward)?

kaytee87 · 09/05/2019 13:56

@kenandbarbie it goes down the line of succession - that's what it means / is there for.

So Charles, William, George, Charlotte, Louis.

Obviously if anyone was a child when they were crowned then they would need a Regent to act on their behalf.

DuMondeB · 09/05/2019 14:07

I read on the BBC news website that H and M don't want a formal title for him so he will be known as Master Archie Mountbatten-Windsor

I think this is alright! Not my taste but it’s a half way point between modern tastes and historical tradition, plus it’s refreshing they haven’t given him a squillion middle names and a title.

The relationship between Phillip and his uncle, Lord Mountbatten was pretty sweet (there is a documentary about it on YouTube) and I think it’s nice that Mountbatten is making a comeback, William and Harry were just ‘Windsor’.

Normally, I’m a big advocate of mum’s putting their own surname into their children’s names in some form (as a middle or a double barrel, or just theirs) but Meghan won’t really need her surname again - Diana was never really ‘Spencer’ again, not even post divorce.

DuMondeB · 09/05/2019 14:10

I don’t generally give a flying fuck about the royals, but this is a lovely picture of two proud new parents - those facial expressions are universal:

Archie Harrison
JaneJeffer · 09/05/2019 14:12

What will the Larries make of this?

Archie Harrison
DontCallMeShitley · 09/05/2019 14:18

Archie Harrison sounds like a kid in a Lena Kennedy book.

Itsnotmesothere · 09/05/2019 15:41

I read that Louis Mountbatten was born a prince. Why isn't prince part of his title in later years?

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 09/05/2019 15:47

kenandbarbie the order of succession goes by branch. Precedence within a branch is by age and (until the birth of George but not in effect until Charlotte) by gender. Every time someone "above" you has a child, you're bumped down the list. The point is to preserve the most "direct" line so it runs parent to child as much as possible.

So when when the Queen was a girl she was the heir to the throne when her father became king. Margaret was 2nd in line behind as younger sister and they were one "branch" of the family tree. The younger brothers of their father and their families were different branches, under the Queen and Margaret as they were the kids of the Monarch- most direct. When the Queen had hen the Queen had Charles, he became the heir as the child of the Queen- the most direct route for the crown. Every subsequent child pushed Margaret further down the list for the same reason, and in turn every other branch of the family. Charles having kids displaced Andrew as second in line, William having kids displaced Harry.

Abdication is also done in favour of the next person along. Edward VII abdicated in favour of his next eldest brother because he was childless at the time of the abdication. If the Queen abdicated, Charles would get the throne, if he abdicated it would be William. William would abdicate in favour of George, although if Wills became king next week and abdicated or died, George would require a regent to rule until he was of age. That would be Harry as the next royal adult along although I dare say Kate would play a part. If the Cambridges were wiped out, Harry would be heir again because an entire branch of the tree is gone. You can abdicate & waive your DC right to the throne but that usually happens when countries become republics.

To illustrate the point, UK succession has gone from - Elizabeth, Margaret etc
to Elizabeth Charles Margaret etc
to Elizabeth, Charles, Andrew, Edward Anne Margaret, David Armstrong-Jones etc
to Elizabeth, Charles, William, Harry, Andrew Beatrice, Eugenie, Edward etc
to Elizabeth, Charles, William, George, Charlotte, Louis, Harry, Archie, Andrew, Bea etc.

Until the birth of George, the rules said the oldest boy inherited and placed men above women. Now, it's birth order. So Charlotte would inherit before Louis if George died or abdicated childless. Previously she wouldn't have. See Andrew & Edward bouncing Anne down the order despite being younger.

kenandbarbie · 09/05/2019 15:53

Thanks! Makes sense now!!
