To think if a zombie apocalypse happened, that there would not be an immediate breakdown in law?

In any zombie apocalypse film ever, within days there are roving dangerous gangs killing people and stealing things. I don't think this would happen in Britain. Yes there would be thefts of food, and lots of breaking into shops, but no there would not in days be gangs of roving murderers killing people and bringing fear.

You sound very naive op. Perhaps a few episodes of the walking dead may be helpful for you Grin

clairemcnam · 09/05/2019 18:51

I am addicted to zombie films and series and have watched most of them. and I have the zombie survival guide Grin

Christ this is pretty depressing actually. I am a nice person. I would mostly do the right thing without laws.

I'm a nice person. People often remark on how lovely I am. But if it was a choice between my the lives of my children and some random, sorry, but the random gets it.

MitziK · 09/05/2019 19:37

I've been in a few lifethreatening situations (yay, go me Sad), ranging from accidents, fires, violence (people with and without weapons) and lived in one of the places that saw rioting.

I don't know where it comes from although I suspect being an abused kid has something to do with but I can often feel something is up way before anybody else. When that happens, I am ready to leave and DP will follow my lead. I'm also sure that I'd do anything to protect him, as I feel it even when it's just some pissed up arsehole trying to pick a fight with him.

I will get up again whenever I get knocked down, whether literally or figuratively. I think that makes me a potential survivor.

(You wouldn't get me anywhere near a stadium. Far too many entrance points, too many nooks and crannies, too many other people to trust not to fuck up. And a handy spot for the Living Dead to come and treat it like a Cadbury's selection pack on Christmas Morning.)

clairemcnam · 09/05/2019 19:45

My DP is the same. He spots people who will be trouble long before anyone else. He has also spotted increasing tension at events or in town centres and got us all to leave, and hours later there have been big fights or rioting. But he has arthritis so can't really run. Although he can move faster than the slowest zombies.

And no a stadium is a terrible idea. You want to be away from people. My workplace would be great if it actually had food there (just a few vending machines) as it is very secure. As long as there are no zombies already in it. And I would be fine with any colleagues and their families in it.

My in laws would be in the best place. They live very rurally, have chickens, freezer full of food, wood fires, dogs and guns. But getting there would be dangerous in a zombie apocalypse.

And people always say in a zombie apocalypse they would go to their nearest gun shop. Where inevitably there would be a gun battle led by the person who actually owns the shop and is not going to let people steal their guns and weapons.

Guns are only useful whilst they have ammunition.

A blade, however...that's for life.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 09/05/2019 19:54

I think a stint as a zombie would be quite peaceful. No worrying about the mortgage, Brexit, the economy...

Just bite me.

CloudRusting · 09/05/2019 19:55

I live in London. Therefore the chances of us surviving a sudden outbreak zombie apocalypse that spreads fast and violently are therefore basically slim to non existence merely due to the volume of people (and this potential zombies) around.

Although should a ZA ever actually happen I appreciate I will regret my stance on strict gun control.

wheresmymojo · 09/05/2019 20:18

I'm with @IAmNotAWitch.

I'm not saying I'm a psychopath but if it's me or someone else, it's not going to be me Wink

CathyorClaire · 09/05/2019 20:46

No point relying on getting hold of guns. Get to a school and load up on rounders bats.

Just sayin'

clairemcnam · 09/05/2019 21:12

If you have to get close enough to stab a zombie in the head, the chances of you being bitten are very high.

Of course if this was a zombie movie, the real way to stay alive is to be a beautiful white young man or woman. You will be safe then. Don't be black, asian or ugly though.

I can read a group pretty well as well.

And always note exits, have a plan for leaving in any situation. You don't run, not when the tension is just warming up. You quietly extricate yourself and walk away.

I do it with alarms as well. Most people don't react quickly to alarms. They stand around wandering if it is a mistake or a drill they were not told about. I don't. I hear alarm. I quietly collect my bag (if it is next to me) or leave it if it is not and calmly leave immediately.

Mostly it is a false alarm. So I shrug and walk back in to wherever. However, twice it has not been and there has been a clusterfuck of panic when people figured it out. A clusterfuck I am not part of.

The other thing I don't do is "group up" at evacuation points. No point being part of the large nicely grouped sheep. Off to the side and as far away as possible whilst still being able to see what is happening and with a further exit/escape to hand.

I always book either exit rows or the nearest one on planes as well. Some fuckwit getting their bag in an emergency is not killing my kids.

Thuglife · 09/05/2019 21:35

To be honest if there was a shortage of my HRT patches I’d probably be murderous VERY quickly Grin

Weaverspin · 09/05/2019 21:54

The Alex Scarrow book mentioned upthread is 'First Light'. It's not happy reading - society goes to hell PDQ when the oil supply gets shut off. There's a sequel, 'Afterlight' - less plausible, but thought-provoking.

Bottom line - be prepared (water, food, medicine), have weapons, be willing to use them.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 10/05/2019 01:01

I would be making myself a pole axe, zero chance of being bitten. Not sure why ZA shows never use them, I guess its a safe boring zombie slayer.

S1naidSucks · 10/05/2019 01:06

There would probably be a larger percentage of middle aged women survive, than any other group. To be honest, if there was a world wide shortage of HRT it wouldn’t be the zombies that would inflict the most damage. 🤪

IAmNotAWitch · 10/05/2019 01:10

Glaive might be better than poleaxe. Not as heavy and you have a longer cutting edge so you don't need to be as accurate.

Chainmail would make a swift return as well I reckon.

Though I do like Addy's electrified mace. Bit too close though. She needs a shield as well as it is a one handed weapon.

Lweji · 10/05/2019 01:18

Never mind zombie apocalypse. Have you watched any of the Mad Max movies? Not the stupid last one, although it also illustrates the point.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 10/05/2019 02:36

Have you watched any of the Mad Max movies?

Not that far off. Climate change might make that reality in a few generations.

IAmNotAWitch · 10/05/2019 03:55

Yep, resource wars more likely than zombies. Inevitable actually I would say.

BasiliskStare · 10/05/2019 04:16

@IamNotaWitch - are you Jack Reacher ? - do you sit with your back to the wall in coffee shops Grin Oh I joke - please do not take offence - actually sensible points as in - if an alarm sounds - assume it is real - what's the worst that can happen if it is not.

IAmNotAWitch · 10/05/2019 04:22

LOL, no but I have been in enough situations where I wanted to leave immediately that I now always have a plan.

BasiliskStare · 10/05/2019 04:36

Excellent @IamNotaWitch . The nearest I can get to a plan is that I always want to sit on the end of a row or near a door. Probably owing more to mild claustrophobia than fear of zombies ( because when they came in I would be first in line.) Perhaps I need to think this through more. On balance me wanting to exit a crowded place quickly wins out over the zombie threat Grin - I like your thinking

IAmNotAWitch · 10/05/2019 04:50

As the OP points out in the first post, it isn't actually the zombies you really have to worry about. It is the people.

And people don't need a zombie apocalypse to go feral. I probably am a little bit claustrophobic.

Some of my jobs have involved working either for (or against) some pretty unpleasant people in some pretty unpleasant situations. It isn't as exciting as it sounds. Grin
