To think if a zombie apocalypse happened, that there would not be an immediate breakdown in law?

In any zombie apocalypse film ever, within days there are roving dangerous gangs killing people and stealing things. I don't think this would happen in Britain. Yes there would be thefts of food, and lots of breaking into shops, but no there would not in days be gangs of roving murderers killing people and bringing fear.

Of course there would. I'm a law abiding member of the public but at the first whiff of the zombie apocalypse I'm going to ram raid the pharmacy and then craft unsavoury looking weapons out of stuff from the shed and then head for the Winchester.

CastleCrasher · 08/05/2019 17:44

@Mari50 I suspect you might be from my home town and I totally agree! GrinWine

DH always says this when we watch a zombie show but I disagree - I think civilisation is a thin veneer and we would soon see the snarling face of humanity in the event of social collapse. Think of the atrocities that gangs visit upon the vulnerable - militia or soldiers, ordinary men who when unleashed engage in rape, torture and murder freely. We see it on the news frequently - massacre and genocide not committed by monsters but by people: brothers, sons, fathers, husbands, grandfathers. When given permission, they turn on their neighbours with violence and cruelty. The zombie apocalypse would give a lot of people that permission. I don’t think it would take long at all.

I've been preparing for the ZA for quite some time - I've watched every episode of The Walking Dead for my basic training - but my plans are broad so I should be able to cope with most kinds of Apocalypses. I've built up a very large store of tinned & dry goods in my "bunker" under the stairs & have a huge amount of large water containers to fill up & purification tablets. Candles, wind-up lanterns, oil lanterns, matches. Radiation suit, gas mask, Geiger counter, tin foil wrapped round anything there with batteries to protect from EMP damage. Potassium Iodide tabs, general First Aid kit. A massive pair of bolt cutters for the looting, an air rifle to get me as far as the gunsmiths very very discrete & largely unknown, located round my corner, where I can stock up on real weapons & ammo. I don't have a lot of faith in humanity tbh.

We're just three days of missed meals from society starting to unravel.

I'm paraphrasing and having a mental block as to who made the observation but it's basically true. Even the best of will be getting hangry by then Grin

Backwoodsgirl · 08/05/2019 18:16

tin foil wrapped round anything there with batteries to protect from EMP damage.

Don’t know if your joking or not. But you need to wrap the electric device in an insulating material then foil.

Or alternatively line a biscuit Tin with cardboard and put your stuff in it.

My plan is to throw myself in the path of the nearest crowd of peckish looking zombies I see. It might hurt a bit at first but it will be quicker than starving and less scarey than lying awake every night listening out for the gangs breaking into my house or the zombies banging aimlessly on my boarded up windows.

And if the zombies are destroyed by a passing comet or something what sort of a world will be left anyway ? No wifi, no hot water, just smelly dirty people cooking feral pigeons and rats over a fire. No, I'm taking my chances with TeamZ.

Shinygoldbauble · 08/05/2019 18:20

We had a couple of days of bad weather in Ireland last year and a Lidl was destroyed and looted...

Walkingdeadfangirl · 08/05/2019 18:35

The killing would be necessary because if society basically reverted to a pre-industrial era then we would need to reduce the number of humans very quickly to a sustainable level. Its really just survival of the fittest, evolution at its most efficient.

Hopefully the zombies would be like those from 'Shaun of the Dead', as they would be the most fun.

WhoWants2Know · 08/05/2019 18:41

I can't see a zombie apocalypse ever being a real concern, but certainly there are things that would collapse society in short order. Oil shortages or a pandemic would do it.

TheQueef · 08/05/2019 18:42

That's the one miri! Cold that was. Grin

JQBased · 08/05/2019 18:47

Lol there is already a breakdown of law on my council estate in Peckham lol

EileenAlanna · 08/05/2019 18:52

@Backwoodsgirl thanks for that tip - going to add the insulation tonight. You sound like a knowledgeable somebody I should team up with -cling to for dear life- in a 'pocalypse. Do you live anywhere near Birmingham UK by any chance?

In a zombie apocalypse you just have to put treadmill machines all around your house so the zombies just keep on walking forever. You have to make sure the electricity generator stays on though, or they stop working. Surely everyone has thought of this???

Also, the whole 'society collapses and everyone murders each other, isn't THAT inevitable. My partner works in disasters and says, you hear more about the bad and horrible situations, but mostly people sort each other out - governments intervene, food parcels arrive, refugee camps get set up, UN forces keep the peace, doctors get airlifted into conflict zones...we'll be fine :-)

Zofloramummy · 08/05/2019 19:06

zombies are my greatest fear (and flying daleks). They just don’t stop! Although presumably at some point they would just fall apart?

Backwoodsgirl · 08/05/2019 19:12

EileenAlanna No I moved out the UK, I like to prep and normally keep a eye on the prepper page

borntobequiet · 08/05/2019 19:15

It all starts with Theresa May, and just gets worse. You have been warned.

Nodnol · 08/05/2019 19:16

I’m heading straight to Ikea when the zombie apocalypse comes. There’s food, comfort and amenities. Plus by the time the zombies make their way through the Ikea maze they will be decomposed enough to take them out with a Briljera.

Tidy2018 · 08/05/2019 19:34

I watched "Dead Set" the other day, and had no idea these things could run so fast.

Unicornshopkeeper · 08/05/2019 20:18

nodnol Grin sounds like a plan, unfortunately our nearest ikea is an hours drive away, I don't think I'll make it. Good luck to you

Lovestonap · 08/05/2019 20:41

See, I'd rather take my chances with the zombies and ravening hoards than spend more than about 45 minutes in IKEA....

Onceuponacheesecake · 08/05/2019 20:49

The thought of FAST zombies terrify me. Surely slow limping zombies are more likely?? Confused

EmeraldShamrock · 08/05/2019 20:52

I don't think it would take a zombi apocalypse. I think if you took the police off the street for a month, it could happen within days.
The amount of aggravated burglary happening is rife, the attackers know they've at least 4 minutes before police arriving, if the person is lucky enough to get a chance to phone the police.
Not to derail many areas suffer mob violence due to austerity cuts, it was rarely the case years ago.

TheLastNigel · 08/05/2019 22:36

We'd be screwed within 4 days in terms of law and order I reckon...
I've got a deep cellar under my house and I think if we got down there quick enough with all the tins in the house and some water we could last a week or two...after that we'd be stymied.
OH has a hatchet down there which he used for chopping wood (pre apocalypse) but neither of us are very Rick Grimes tbh...
