To ask about your children's heights?

HennyPennyHorror · 07/05/2019 11:52

Has anyone got one child who seems quite tall and another who's short?

DD is 10 and almost 5 feet which I know isn't enormous but DD1 is 14 and only 5.1...it annoys poor DD1 that she's smaller. All DD1s mates seem to be giraffe-like too...both the lads and the girls...some of them are cracking on for 6 foot.

I tell them both that height doesn't matter and they've both got time for anything to happen yet...what about your DC?

So short people are sickly, fussy, starved and lazy?

of course not! but those factors can have an effect on height in addition to genetic factors.

elliejjtiny · 07/05/2019 14:21

My 8 year old and my 5 year old are nearly the same height and in the same size clothes. My 12 year old son is 5ft 1in and my 11 year old son is 4ft 11in.

Comiconce · 07/05/2019 14:25

My nearly 12 year old is just short of 5 foot and doesn't seem to have grown much for a year or so - she was a tall child before then and she's desperate to get a bit taller soon (plenty of time though).
My 9 year old was not as tall as her sister as a younger child but is catching up nicely and is now 4'6 ish.
I'm 5'11 but at the moment there is no telling whether the girls reach my height. I was 5'7 by the time I was 12 (but don't tell dd1!)

Shelbybear · 07/05/2019 14:37

My nephews, 1 is very tall for his age could pass for 14/15 he's only 12. The other one is 10 and seems so small compared to others his age and his group at fball. His little sister is also quite tall, it does annoy him too. He feels it's holding him back at fball as everyone seems so big and strong compared to him.

My little girl seems quite small for age, she's actually just about average but my dh is 6ft4 we always assumed she wld be tall. Plenty time to grow yet though lol.

goose1964 · 07/05/2019 14:49

My boys are 6'5 and 6'2 and DD is 5'2

User10fuckingmillion · 07/05/2019 14:55

People are really bloody weird about height. You have done nothing to earn being tall! And being short has not adversely affected me in any way, considering the amount of sympathy I get.

EvilDog · 07/05/2019 14:59

Dd is 15 and 6’1

Ds is 14 and 5’6

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 07/05/2019 15:05

Not here with my kids, but I was the tallest girl at 164cm from age 10 (I literally remember measuring with a meter stick in the school hall!) but I never grew upwards again so it didn’t last long!

Little sister ended up about 5 cm taller.

Allfednonedead · 07/05/2019 15:08

I have 6yo twins with 10cm between them. The younger (by 23 mins) is the taller. Her feet are two sizes bigger than her twin’s too.

DinoGreen · 07/05/2019 15:40

In my family of 3 siblings (both parents average sized) we have one very tall, one very short and one average height!

GinTimeAtHome · 07/05/2019 15:52

I’m 5ft 9 (maybe 10 if you measure me in the morning) dh is 5ft 11. Dh’s Dad was 6ft 6, dh mum was 4ft 10. Out of his siblings dh is the smallest his brother is 6ft 5. My mum is 5ft 6 my dad 6ft my brothers are 6ft and 6ft 2. Me and my sister are 5ft 9 and a bit 😂

My dc1 is 8 and 148cm tall
My dc2 is 6 and 135cm tall

Both are on the 98th for height.

I’ve been told both of mine will be tall 🤷‍♀️

ALongHardWinter · 07/05/2019 17:31

My DGD is 12.5 years old,and is 5 foot 3 inches. Only another two inches and she'll have caught up with me.

VampirateQueen · 07/05/2019 17:45

Not sure what my 2 are in feet, but my daughter is 4 (nearly 5) and 110cm and my son is 1.5 years and jusy shy of 90cm.

Witchend · 07/05/2019 18:03

In my family there's almost a foot between my tallest brother and my shortest sister. My shortest sister was tall at 11yo, but stopped growing then. Tallest brother was tall all the way up.
Brother takes after dm's side, who are all tall. Sister takes after df side and is about average for the females that side.
I am in the middle so goodness knows whose genes for height I got. I was small at 11yo, but grew steadily until I was 15yo.

IntoValhalla · 07/05/2019 18:05

Both of my DCs are on the 75th centile for height.
I’m on the smaller side of average at 5’4”, but DH is 6’2”, so I guess they get their lanky legs from him!!

tor8181 · 07/05/2019 18:35

SisyphusHadItEasy · 07/05/2019 18:47

I have 2 girls. DD1 is 20 and 6'2" She hates being tall - it seems that is all everyone ever comments about her, especially those who have known her since she was small.

DD2, on the other hand, is almost 14 and 4'8". She is the smallest (by a large margin) in her class and is often mistaken for a child 5 or 6 years younger.

Furrydogmum · 07/05/2019 19:03

Ds1 is 6'3" at 21, ds 2 is 5'10" at 17. I'm 5'9" dh 5'11"
Ds1 is a fussy faddy awkward eater and always has been, ds 2 eats all the right things but doesn't look like he'll catch up to his big brother - dh resigned to being smaller than both though 😄

OwlBeThere · 07/05/2019 19:09

My 11 year old DD is 5ft 2 and still growing, my 13 year old DD and my 14 year old ds are 5ft 9... their almost 16 year old sister is 5ft exactly. Dd1 has always been small and has a tiny frame and tiny hands.
I am fairly tall for a woman, their dad is fairly short for a man. Both my gran and their dads mum are under 5ft tall but my dads mum was almost 6ft tall.
It is what it is.

CherryPavlova · 07/05/2019 19:14

A tallish 6’ 4” lad.
A midget 4’11” daughter.
A middling 5’ 8” daughter.

All over 90th centile at birth. 9lb 3oz, 10lb 4oz and 9lb 13oz in birth order.

We’re middling at 5’6” and 6’0”

CustardCreamLover · 07/05/2019 19:30

My 3 month old son is 1ft10 😁 does that help anyone 🤣

Greenandcabbagelooking · 07/05/2019 19:39

My mother is 5 ft 10. My Dad is 6 ft. They have the biggest combined height of any of the parents of my friends. All my friends were taller than me until I was about 14, and was only about 5 ft tall. Then I shot up, kept growing until I was at uni and am now about 5 ft 6 and a half. Which is above average, but pretty short when you think how tall my mum is.

My brother is 6 ft 1, and his children look like they will be tall too, even though my SIL comes from a family of tiny people.

I have all the short genes. My paternal grandmother was under 5 ft, as were all her sisters. My mum's gran was also only about 5 ft tall.

Timmythyme · 07/05/2019 19:59

When it comes to girls periods are a scientific indication. They tend to grow 1 to 2 additional inches in the year or two after getting their first period and then stop growing. Boys are harder to pinpoint so parental height is the best, although not exact, indicator.

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 07/05/2019 20:01

DS is still a baby so no clue there yet, but I was 5'1 at 14 5'8 by 18, late growth spurt, there's still time!

ThanksForAllTheFish · 07/05/2019 20:02

DD is 9.5 and only 126cm tall (so about 4ft2 ish). She’s one of the smallest in her class and hits around the 9th centile on the growth charts.

Going by the red book and the genetic height predictions she should be around the 50th centile. She’s always been small for her age but I do expect her to take a growth spurt in the next year or so.

According to MIL that’s the norm for that side of the family. I did notice that pattern with DN last year. He’s a year older than DD and was just slightly taller than her constantly. Then between Christmas and summer last year he had a major growth spurt (so just before he turned 10). Not sure of his exact height but it was very noticeable, particularly standing beside DD.

My mum is still convinced DD is going to be tall (despite being so short at the moment) because she has massive feet in proportion to the rest of her. She’s this tiny little thing with big flippers!
