To ask about your children's heights?

Has anyone got one child who seems quite tall and another who's short?

DD is 10 and almost 5 feet which I know isn't enormous but DD1 is 14 and only 5.1...it annoys poor DD1 that she's smaller. All DD1s mates seem to be giraffe-like too...both the lads and the girls...some of them are cracking on for 6 foot.

I tell them both that height doesn't matter and they've both got time for anything to happen yet...what about your DC?

Me 5' 7.5"
DH 6' 1"

DD1 is 15 - 5' 8"
DD2 is 13 - 5' 6" and still growing
DS is 9 - 5' and still growing far too quickly. I've got a brother and uncles that are 6.3"+

DD1 is so happy she's taller than me!

MirandaWest · 07/05/2019 12:59

I’m 5 foot 4 and their dad is 5 foot 10

DS is 15 and about 5 foot 8. Has been that height for a couple of years. I think he’d like to grow a bit more.

DD is 13 and about 5 foot 3 and a half. I am still taller than her. Just. She’s been growing a lot this past year though so I suspect I’ll be the shortest soon

Villanellesproudmum · 07/05/2019 12:59

Dd 14 and 5’6” the same as me and likes to point it out, a lot!

Inebriatededna · 07/05/2019 13:00

My oldest son and my daughter were consistently on the taller side of average growing up but my younger son was always shorter than his peers especially as they became teenagers . He left school hardly taller than he started high school but a year later shot up and is now the tallest at 6’ 2 .

PointlessUsername · 07/05/2019 13:01

Dd 2 who is 11 is taller than DD1 who is 15

She is also the same height as her brothers who are 12 and 13.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 07/05/2019 13:03

Both DC here are far above the average heights of their friends at school. They're both built exactly like my side of the family with long, willowy limbs.

I think boys tend to stop growing around 15 so there's definitely still time.

Walnutwhipster · 07/05/2019 13:07

I'm 5'3"
DH 5'7"
DS is 6'1"

Trillis · 07/05/2019 13:13

DS1 (17) and DS2 (15) are both just over 6'. They were both about 5'10" by about age 12 and massively taller than their friends, however friends have all now caught up and mostly overtaken DS1.

DD (12) has been 5'7" ish for about a year now. I haven't told her that she's probably stopped growing now (she started her periods over 2 years ago) but she really wanted to be 6' tall too!

StevieNicks1976 · 07/05/2019 13:15

I don't know why some girls are desperate to be tall. DD(14) seems to have stopped at 5ft 1" (takes after her great nan).
She's slim (but has curves) and toned and utterly gorgeous. As are her Amazonian friends but they have big feet

RedSkyLastNight · 07/05/2019 13:18

Because height equates to earning power, attractiveness and health.

... and none of those things are important for women?

Damntheman · 07/05/2019 13:23

I can't speak for my own kids because they're far too young to know how tall they'll end up. But I am the smallest of my siblings at 5'7. My little sister is 5'10 (I was very angry when she overtook me at probably actually about the age your daughters are now OP), my big sister is 6ft and my brothers are all 6ft and up. They call me runt :p Even though I'm above average height for an English woman. It's just the way it is. My mum is 5'4 and my dad was 6'4. Genetics is a funny thing!

hazeyjane · 07/05/2019 13:30

We are all shortarses.

I'm 4'11"
Dh is 5'6"
Dd's are the shortest of their friends and ds has a growth disorder.

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 07/05/2019 13:30

My no2 son ended up around 5'6 but he was teeny when he was young.
He started school in size 18-24 months trousers, and when they went swimming in year two, the pool was a metre deep and he was a metre tall...
I worried he would end up really short but he grew eventually. He looks like always being the shortest of my children though.
In contrast, my 14 year old no3 son is now 6'2 and still growing!

iolaus · 07/05/2019 13:32

My 18 year old girl is about 5' 3, the 17 year old a little shorter again - 5' 2 (I'm 5'4) - their 15 year old brother is 5' 10 I think, maybe a little taller (last time I checked he was the same height as his dad)

I do agree to an extent that if you have one tall and one short child I'd rather the female be the shorter one - partly just for convience as a lot of tall women seem to complain that clothing is difficult to get - ie skirts look shorter than intended, trousers aren't designed for really long legs (and men say the opposite that if you are shorter than average it's harder) - ideally average for both would be better for this perspective - but average for a man is taller than average for a woman

I never minded being shorter - neither of the girls seem to mind

Gbarmy · 07/05/2019 13:34

DS1 (14) is 5'11
DS2 (13) is 6'
Both tower over us already, and still have a good few years growing time left 😲

Offler · 07/05/2019 13:35

DD is 12 and has generally been tall for her age, although that slowed down and she’s just over 5ft now, on the shorter side compared to many of her classmates. Very similar to myself. When I started secondary school I was one of the smallest, but by the time I left I was one of the tallest, had a huge 5” spurt at 14 and ended up at 5’7.5”

DS is 6, and was a smaller baby than DD and has generally been petite, although he is catching up with some of his peers now and is just getting into his ‘correct’ age range for clothes.

But they both also follow DP’s family pattern. Bigger girls to start, dinky boys who become lanky in their late teens!

Winegumaddict · 07/05/2019 13:36

Not DC but I'm 5'3 and my DSis is 5'11 she was always the same height as me people used to think we were twins. It makes no difference you only grow as tall as you grow.

CountFosco · 07/05/2019 13:38

was ds ill a lot as child? fussy eater?
'lazy' (not a lot exercise outside?) deficiencies (iron, b12)?

So short people are sickly, fussy, starved and lazy? Wow. Maybe it's worth pointing out that children that are obese tend to be taller than average.

My minidynamos are outside the whole time, eat a good diet, are healthy and are short by English standards but about average for their genetic inheritance. Here they are always the shortest, I've had some other parents staring in amazement at what DS can do (age 6.5 but height of a 3 year old but obviously much more advanced). I say all their food goes into movement rather than growing.

WhatALearningCurve · 07/05/2019 13:39

One of my sisters and i are around 5 ft 4. Two sisters are 5 10ish and my brother is 6 ft 3!

Sculpin · 07/05/2019 13:41

My Dad got overtaken by his brother in height when he was 12 and his brother was 8!

Bunnybigears · 07/05/2019 13:41

DS1 just turned 12, 5 foot 5 and size 9 feet
DS2 just turned 9 is on the 2nd centile for height
Hmm

floraloctopus · 07/05/2019 13:42

Adult DD is 5 foot 5, nearly adult DS is 6 foot 2 and mid-teens DS is 5 foot 11.

waterlego · 07/05/2019 13:43

My DD is 13 and 5ft. Her brother has just turned 11 and is taller than her by an inch. She isn’t best pleased about it, and given that she started her periods nearly two years ago, I’m not sure she will have much more height growth (if I’m right in thinking that girls tend to stop growing within a couple of years of the onset of periods?) I am 5ft 3 and expected her final height to be slightly taller than me, but who knows? Either way, she is destined to be diddy and will have to get used to it!

HennyPennyHorror · 07/05/2019 13:43

To answer a few questions...older DD (not a ds) has always eaten healthily and well.

She's always been small compared to her peers.

GreasyHairDoNotCare · 07/05/2019 13:48

OP, I'm 5'1 and stopped growing at about 13. I feel for your DD as I was always on the receiving end of short jokes etc.

The plus side is I'm a size 3 shoe and can but really cheap shoes Grin
