To want to shout at my new colleague "you didn't die, if you had you wouldn't be here talking shite"

Just that.

Apparently he was in a bad accident several years ago and "died" three times.

No he didn't. We haven't the ability to resurrect people.

DH does this as well. Tells me about his friend who "died" for 10 minutes after a heart episode. I have pointed out that he can't have died and I get told that no, he did. the doctors told him.

I want to go find a plank and hit either me or him over the head with it - which ever is quickest to shut up his bollocks.

I want to get an ad campaign stating this bloody obvious point because its ridiculous the number of people who parrot it out.

When I had defib training the nurse training us reassured us by saying “if there’s no heartbeat they are dead, so nothing you do is going to make things any worse. But you might just manage to get their heart going again.” The odds are small, but good quality, timely CPR and a defib can make a difference. It’s why they campaign and fundraise to put more Defibrillators in public places.

I was shocked by the dead comment as I’d never really thought about it before. But weirdly it does make it easier to do CPR as suddenly the prospect of cracking ribs seems less concerning.

What a lot of unpleasant people on this thread who have clearly never been through anything traumatic in their lives ever.

FWIW I am due to have open heart surgery in the next few weeks. As part of the pre-op preparation stuff I have been given a leaflet on the psychological impacts that some face knowing that their heart has had to be stopped and re-started for the process of surgery to be carried out successfully, and mine is a kind of surgery which does have a high success and recovery rate, and yet it is seen to be incredibly traumatic even when done under controlled conditions.

2.5 years ago I collapsed and spent several days on full life support in an induced coma. Everything, including my breathing, was being taken care of by machines. I wasn’t dead but without the machines. Would have been. Indeed, without the ambulance arriving when it did I would be dead. I don’t need to talk about it in any great deal but when I came out of hospital I had flashbacks to that time for weeks afterwards even though I was unconscious.

But nice to think that people on here think that it’s all so amusing.

Meadow1203 · 07/05/2019 12:35

OP You sound like a very unpleasant individual. Get some empathy.

PJMasksAreOnTheirWay · 07/05/2019 12:42

Just wanted to add that you cannot use a defib on someone in asystole. Unlike what the tv would have you believe.

How would you rather he phrase it for you OP?

Vulpine · 07/05/2019 12:46

Rather than hit him over the head I would be fascinated to hear his story

Innernutshell · 07/05/2019 12:47

What a lot of unpleasant people on this thread who have clearly never been through anything traumatic in their lives ever.

Just shows how wrong you can be.

JaretsGirlfren · 07/05/2019 12:49

One of the school dads once told me that he had died...and he had woken up in the freezer with a tag on his toe! He was deadly serious and must think I’m stupid enough to believe him

Once the heart has STOPPED beating, there is no way back. As someone on another thread mentioned earlier, you need a pulse - however faint - to get the heart rhythm going again.

Have you the faintest idea what a pulse is?

Nottheduchess · 07/05/2019 12:53

Fucks sake, how pedantic and nasty OP. Surely this isn’t the first time you’ve heard it described as such? I take it you read magazines and watch tv. His heart stopped, he was dead until they restarted it, doesn’t matter if that’s a matter of seconds or minutes. Grow up.

GnomeDePlume · 07/05/2019 12:59

On the CPR thing. When I did my workplace First Aid we were told that CPR probably wouldnt work in the sense of bringing the person back but that what it could do was mean that a person could be kept going long enough to notify family. Far better to pass away in hospital surrounded by family than on a lonely roadside.

PoohBearsHole · 07/05/2019 13:10

What may have started out as a light hearted rant over pedantic’s has backfired a bit OP.

It probably is boring and uninteresting for you but I expect your cat/children/house building/holiday is to him. He’s new, he’s trying to impress, he’s also probably still trying to come to terms with it.

It just doesn’t make you put to sound very nice - sorry!

I think I’d get frustrated but not nearly as bored as hearing the same story of when my colleague was mayor of the local town 3 x in a row - EVERY DAY FOR 5 YEARS 🤦‍♀️

BabyDarlingDollfaceHoney · 07/05/2019 13:36

I perform CPR probably once a week. Hospital setting. It's very very common.

Soontobe60 · 07/05/2019 14:06

Definition of resuscitation
medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/resuscitation

Belenus · 07/05/2019 14:42

Resuscitation has a similar etymology to "resurrection". It does mean to raise up again and "revivify" is often listed as a synonym, and that means bring back to life.

I notice the OP has completely disappeared.

MondeoFan · 07/05/2019 14:44

I'd cut him some slack tbh he's just trying to explain to you the severity of what he's been through

FrameyMcFrame · 07/05/2019 17:07

Yes that's a terrifying thing to happen.

He probably has post traumatic stress disorder from this.

It's a good thing that he can talk about it to you.

Ninkaninus · 07/05/2019 17:51

I would hope that OP hasn’t come back because she’s busy apologising to her OP and his friend, promising to learn the facts of a situation before she goes wading in correcting people about something she clearly has no understanding of, and sending some good vibes to her colleague...

Ninkaninus · 07/05/2019 17:52

Uhm *DH, obviously.

CylindraceousNicholas · 07/05/2019 18:33

He reminds me of those people who - following a dramatic incident - say if that car had been 5 mins earlier/3 metres closer/20 miles faster etc etc I'D HAVE BEEN KILLED

Yeah - but it wasn't and you aren't. FFS.

I like those stories. Brings about a deep appreciation of life in me. Alive still by pure coincidence, all of us. One choice, one pop to the shops, one turn right, and we die. Obviously we all know that, but when you have an experience that could almost have involved you, it makes it hit home a bit more, how precarious life is.

Whatdoesitmatteranyway · 07/05/2019 18:35

Nope. Was busy all day.

Won’t apologise - still don’t believe you can come back from the dead.

To me dead is brain dead

OP posts:
Cyw2018 · 07/05/2019 18:43

I once witnessed a resus attempt where time death was declared twice.

It was an absolute cluster fuck, with surgeons rowing with anesthetists, nurses & ED doctors taking sides, registrar's phoning their (consultant) bosses from the resus rooms mid arrest... You get the picture.

It might be said that that patient died twice, but they were very definitely dead by the second time (they were never going to survive)!!

Ninkaninus · 07/05/2019 18:46

Okay then.......

Let me guess, you’re one of those who doesn’t know the difference between fact and opinion?

CitadelsofScience · 07/05/2019 18:51

Ah so Op is still being a bit twatish then.

I sincerely hope Op you never have to go through something like this because 9 times out of 10 it changes people, you don't just carry on with life as it was before.

When it happened to me they were surprised they could revive me, I shouldn't really have survived. The medical team told me this. But hey ho you think I'm another boring fucker no doubt...
