To think that 10,000 steps is a lot?

I have been feeling quite pleased with myself as I've been easily smashing the recommended step amount of 2,000.

However I've just found out it's in fact 10,000. That seems a lot?

Do others manage that every day?

Yes everyone who hits their set target is lying obviously 🙄. Don't sit and keep moving and it's easily achievable

bebeboeuf · 05/05/2019 21:58

Since I’ve been wearing a Bellabeat I get around 10k - 13k per day.
I would say I have quite a sedentary lifestyle.
The days I’m in an office probably average about 8.5k but just popping to shops or running around after toddler makes a massive difference

IceRebel · 05/05/2019 21:59

Yes everyone who hits their set target is lying obviously

I haven't seen anyone comment that. However, 6k before going to work or 2,000 steps before a shower, do seem more than a little unbelievable.

TeacupDrama · 05/05/2019 21:59

I do live in a reasonably large house I have just counted manually going from office to kitchen to make a coffee going up and down stairs to bedroom, it is 115 steps so unless I went up and down stairs over 80 times a day it would not be 10K if I work from home I do about 3000 in a day, while on a long walk my stride length maybe 90cm most of the time I take shorter steps so going up hill would be more steps for a similar distance
I think most of these devices are highly inaccurate, I stopped using them, one day I manually counted 200 steps it said 122, another time I had apparently done 300 steps without moving from chair it is a gas lift rotating chair so even time I slightly moved it was a step
for most people 10k is about 5 miles, obviously those with longer legs take larger strides and will cover a greater distance with the same number of steps but probably not used any more energy
if your baseline is 4000 even increasing to 4500 will be of some benefit then maybe trying to push it to 5000 in a few weeks and build up slowly
if I am walking somewhere I will walk about 3 miles in an hour but most of my walking is stop start so the pace is more like 2 miles an hour which is then 2-3 hours a day walking which is not really achievable for me every day, certainly not when I work from home

bebeboeuf · 05/05/2019 21:59

Hopefulhalf- that doesn’t seem right. If I did that amount my step counter would be off the charts

RoseMartha · 05/05/2019 22:00

I average on 10-12k a day. Work days usually do 8-10k. At least twice a week will do 15-20k. Dependant on how many errands etc I do. And sometimes will go for a walk as activity as opposed to having to park a mile out of town to get free parking then rush about town then rush back to car etc

Singletomingle · 05/05/2019 22:00

I gave up counting after only 3 months but during the week I was hitting 30,000 steps easily and even on occasion over 40,000. At the weekends far less and much more dependent on activity if I went running or walking 10-20,000 wasnt a problem.

Fedupflo · 05/05/2019 22:01

My Fitbit tells me I average less than 1 day a week at less than 10,000 steps. I often do more -about 13,000 seems to be an average. I teach, I'm also studying but I have a dog.

PickAChew · 05/05/2019 22:01

As for pottering around the house, if I don't go out (which usually means no further than the Greggs across the road - I never stay in, completely) I rack up about 6500 steps. Our house isn't massive, just a 3 bed semi. It's about 50% bigger than our last house, a 2 up 2 down terrace. A day at home, there would be about 3500 steps. I think the layout of the houses makes a bigger difference than just the size. Last house was long and thin and this one is fairly square, with downstairs rooms radiating off a central hallway.

DoneLikeAKipper · 05/05/2019 22:02

Don't sit and keep moving and it's easily achievable

Really? If we keep moving then eventually you’ll reach your step count? I never thought of it like that! Genius, I might give it a go. Not tomorrow though, it’s a bank holiday and Game of Thrones is on - I think it’s 50 steps from my bed to the sofa.

Fedupflo · 05/05/2019 22:03

I do more than 2000 before I shower because I walk the dog first.

TeacupDrama · 05/05/2019 22:05

you know some people have to sit in order to work

Strandliv · 05/05/2019 22:07

I did 36,868 steps today...I had to do a 25km walk to get that high. I average 11,000 steps most days without really putting in any amount of effort, but really pay no attention to it normally.

To think that 10,000 steps is a lot?
bebeboeuf · 05/05/2019 22:08

Yes my work days in the office are very different

On my non work days as much as I’d like to sit down I don’t until about 9pm

GreatestShowUnicorn · 05/05/2019 22:08

I'm a childminder can do 10,000 without leaving the house!

hatemyhairhun · 05/05/2019 22:09

I don’t think it’s a lot at all, especially if it’s not meaningful exercise. IE going on a brisk, long hike vs pottering about the house. I think 30k steps would be a lot - I went on a long walk over about 3 hours and definitely felt like I’d just had a leg day at the gym afterwards.

I average 10–15k steps a day just going to work from walking 10mins to my local tube station. If I keep my phone on me during work, I’ll gain 1000s of extra steps just from moving around in the office but I’d hardly consider that as exercise. If I drive, my step count would be lower of course, but I’d still consider 10k to be an easy, achievable step count. 2k is f all really.

SheSaidNoFuckThat · 05/05/2019 22:09

@DoneLikeAKipper behave. People are saying it's hard - it's only hard if you're lifestyle is sitting, make different choices and it's easy done. I don't watch tv in the day, I keep moving, I dance etc. If people want to hit higher targets then they can if they choose to

gluteustothemaximus · 05/05/2019 22:09

I tend to hit 20 million before midday, so yes, YABU to think 2,000 is a lot.

Littlepumpkinpie · 05/05/2019 22:09

I do between 15k and 20k per day as a minimum counted on my Apple Watch. No flapping hands needed. Only done 10k today I took it off this afternoon and wore a different one phone counted a further 3k but it was jiggling around in my bag

BackforGood · 05/05/2019 22:10

It obviously depends on your job and your lifestyle, but someone saying earlier they do 200 just making breakfast clearly can't be right.

On my wfh days, if I don't specifically go out for a long walk for an hour or go to the gym, I would normally come in at well under 1000. Even on the days when I WOTH it is unusual for me to get to 2000.

WindFlower92 · 05/05/2019 22:10

I'm a teacher and on a busy day, two classes at the gym and a 5k run I can manage just over 20k. A normal day of teaching is about 7k, so have to add on an extra walk to get to 10k. Since being on maternity leave I've not managed anywhere near that; I've done about 800 steps today! Need to start going on some walks!

MrsJamin · 05/05/2019 22:12

As people have said, 10,000 steps has been debunked and it definitely shouldn't include incidental steps around the house but more purposeful movement done with some pace. Its much better to aim to do 150 minutes of medium-vigourous activity done in sections of at least 10 minutes, enough to really feel your heart pumping more than it would do by sitting watching the TV. I'm not sure I could do as few as 2,000 unless I was sick.

SheSaidNoFuckThat · 05/05/2019 22:12

@TeacupDrama yes some people do sit for work, but there are more hours in the day than work. It's choice at the end of the day

BertrandRussell · 05/05/2019 22:13

Actually, I quite often hit 12,000 before my shower.

Because I often shower in the evening.

Strandliv · 05/05/2019 22:14

I think some people are just more active than others. I’m not exaggerating that I average 11,000 with minimal effort. As I am sure the others who posted similarly are not. I wouldn’t worry though, isn’t the whole 10,000 steps thing a day a pile of rubbish really, I’m pretty sure there’s minimal scientific evidence for it.
