To think that 10,000 steps is a lot?

I have been feeling quite pleased with myself as I've been easily smashing the recommended step amount of 2,000.

However I've just found out it's in fact 10,000. That seems a lot?

Do others manage that every day?

30 min brisk walking is around 3000 steps for me.

That sounds about right to me rather than 10k walking between the sun lounger and bar but doesn't brisk walking mean longer steps - do you actually do many more...?

red at home I will often do in excess of 15k .....but I walk as often as I can and run/gym daily so I'm used that amount of activity.
On holiday I will walk the long way round if that's an option and try to do at least a short walk at some point plus I have a 4 year old so inevitably there is going to be some additional running around after him.

Yeah, I call bullshit on some of these "12,000 steps before lunch" claims.

I did a half hour morning walk, usual stuff around office, walk after work for 45 mins. An hour's Gardening - several trips to compost bin at end of garden, etc etc

Still only 6500 steps.

Managed 10,000 - just! - on only one day in the last few months when I did a sponsored walk for Parkinson's - took around 2.5/3 hours and then walked home. Don't have enough time to do this every day!

Well so far this morning I’ve been to the bathroom and back. 55 steps apparently.

I want my 4000 before I get out of bed! Not fair 😉

2000 is nothing. I can easily get to 7/8 k in a day but to get to 10 I need to go for a walk/run though not necessarily a long one.

I find it easier to broadly aim for 70k per week because some days I can manage 15k plus when having an "active" day but some are much much lower.

you need to accurately measure pace to convert steps to miles on a brisk walk your pace maybe 90cm but just walking around the house 60cm as we take smaller steps when going slower and uphill, if you are properly runnig the pace will lengthen to over a metre say 1.15

a step is a step but 10,000 doesn't equal the same distance all the time
a mile is about 1650 metres so 10000 steps at a brisk walking pace is about 5.4 miles but with smaller steps around house etc 3.6 miles but with actual running it would be closer to 7 miles

I don't need fancy calories etc and I won't spend the money on a fitbit, a phone is useless as I normally have it in my bag so it doesn't record, if I hols it in my hand it mostly doesn't record either, I don't often wear clothes with pockets I think an old fashioned pedometer that clips to waistband might be better not sure but these all seem so inaccurate
it is extremely difficult to do 3.6 miles with small steps just walking around the house to get 10000 you need to be actively moving for 2 hours a day

I broke my record on Thursday. 36,000. But I had to go to a work meeting in London which meant walking to and from the station at both ends which is about 90 minutes of walking - and I also went to a shop to use a gift card so walked to and from the Tube, up and down stairs etc.

In the evening I ran 9.5ish miles.

Yesterday I did about 3000.

I have 4 kids but I've usually done 3k before even leaving the house !

I use my Fitbit for recording and keeping on track and as mentioned by a previous poster aim for 70k over a week rather than 10k a day. I live in central London but have now started walking to work more rather than a tube or Uber. With walking to work, a couple of gym sessions a week and a run with DH at the weekend, I usually make my target. Bad weeks are those when I’ve done a lot of travelling for work and spent too much time sitting on a plane.

I’ve got my new pedometer clipped to my belt. I did 700 steps doing a big shop in Sainsbury’s. I parked at the far end of the huge car park.
My LetsFit band counted 940 steps.

I do 15-20,000 a day but I do sort my horse and run a yard before and after work which is also an active job. If I was to stay at home for the day I would do bugger all steps. Maybe go for a daily walk, just something you can build into your routine.

Horseriding and driving can both add steps. Also can leaving your tracker on top of the washing machine, I just discovered. Hello 4000 extra steps!

Driving shouldn't add steps. It doesn't on my pedometer or on any one I have had in the last four years (I have had a few!). I can imagine why riding a horse could add steps though as steps are being taken.

This thread is funny - you have the pedometer people saying yes 10000 steps can be hard if you have a long day in an office and the Fitbit people saying it's actually really easy for them, and their Fitbits are really accurate, yes they are, yes they are, yes they ARE! Grin

I don't ride horses but my Fitbit doesn't add steps for driving or cycling.

My Fitbit definitely sometimes (but not always) adds steps for driving. And sometimes it registers a drive as a period of exercise - normally 'outdoor cycling'.

I am firmly in the camp of being surprised how many steps people get just in the house. I really struggle to get 2000 steps in days I am working (desk job) and a day mooching at home doing chores only gets me around 4500. I have to be up on my feet all day, out of the house to get over 10000...

I'm also surprised. I have only done 404 steps today and I've done breakfast, gotten ready and stuck the seedling out in the garden. 3 story house, now WFH. I'll barely get 3000 unless I go for a run, even then I wont hit 10,000.

When I go into the office I'm up at 5. I do all the tricks but unless I push a large walk or run to post 20:30 I just cant do more than about 7000.

At the weekend, I do an hours intensive martial arts and it barely registers. Hours of gardening doesnt register but I ache from it. I don't think it's all about the steps, although I wish I could fit exercise in on work days. I have started skipping with a rope every 2 hours when working from home for 5 minutes or so.

When I was on a city holiday, we were out all day walking to get 15 - 20,000.

I also have a Garmin. I'm getting less steps than I use to with a FitBit. The Garmin says I've ran 1.6K to every 2K my phone says.

I can manage 10K if I leave the car at home on a work day and walk to station, then walk to office and repeat in the evening. Approx 2 hours walking.

There’s no way you can clock that amount of steps having a ‘pool day’ Grin, unless it’s a fucking massive hotel and the pool is a mile away.

People keep saying that they are surprised at how many steps people get inside the house but I don't think anyone has said that they get more than 4,000 have they? I do about that in the house but I deliberately walk around. If I didn't, I would probably only do 2,500.
