To think that 10,000 steps is a lot?

I have been feeling quite pleased with myself as I've been easily smashing the recommended step amount of 2,000.

However I've just found out it's in fact 10,000. That seems a lot?

Do others manage that every day?

I usually hit 10k on working days. Desk-based job but I walk to and from the station, plus nursery/school pickup. My watch picks up bouncing on an exercise ball as steps but my phone doesn’t, so watch also thought I was walking a ton in the evenings when dealing with a grumpy baby.

I did a few stepcount challenges at work and we always got thrashed by teams from hospitals - nurses walk loads!

SkintAsASkintThing · 05/05/2019 21:37

2000 a day is worryingly low. Do you have mobility issues ??

Treaclepie19 · 05/05/2019 21:37

I didn't do a lot before (SAHM and some days didn't go out far)
Now my 3yo is at nursery its nearly 3000 steps there and the same back. I then do zumba twice a week which easily does 6000 or more.
It's amazing how quickly you can get to 10000.

bamboofibre · 05/05/2019 21:38

Not sure. I like in a hilly/mountainous area and rack up steps easily as I have no car, but I sometimes wonder if my Versa is not over-estimating.

havingtochangeusernameagain · 05/05/2019 21:38

I live about 10 minutes walk away from the shops. I walk fast so I don't know how far that is, but it is only about 3000 steps for the round trip.

Yesterday I did parkrun and I only got to 7000 steps as I got back to my car afterwards. So a 5k run doesn't use that many steps.

Tomorrow I am running a 10k so it will be interesting to see how many I cover then.

I am a member of Vitality health insurance and so I get 3 points for 7K steps, 5 points for 10 and 8 for 12,500 steps. Failed today as I only did 6000 steps. But yesterday I did about 13,000 in the end.

A lot of people on this thread aren’t being honest.

Either that or they have it on their dominant hand, and spend hours waving. Grin

HoozTurnIsIT · 05/05/2019 21:39

Reading this thread it seems the best way to increase your steps is to get a fraudbit Fitbit and swing your arms when you walk.

bamboofibre · 05/05/2019 21:39

Saying that, it is 2.5 miles into 'town' by the easiest route, which I seldom use unless I'm carrying a lot of shopping.

ladybee28 · 05/05/2019 21:39

10,000 steps was a marketing campaign sparked by the Japanese Olympics in 1964.

So unless you have a penchant for following fairly random medical guidance from the 1960s aimed at keeping American culture out of your house... you're probably OK Grin

DoneLikeAKipper · 05/05/2019 21:40

I was exaggerating for effect

Mmm. And how do you think your (and other’s) exaggerations and showing off is supportive to the OP? What you are essentially saying/sneering is that their base aim is you rolling over in bed? Very nice, very helpful.

BertrandRussell · 05/05/2019 21:40

“I can do 2000 before I get in the shower, in the morning.”

How?

DropZoneOne · 05/05/2019 21:42

@churchthecat

Does anyone else end up thinking they have to beat the Fitbit and end up doing laps around the bedroom at 10pm if they're on 9980?

🤣 oh yes, I've been known to pace the living room to get the last 500 steps in, especially when i was challenging a friend

havingtochangeusernameagain · 05/05/2019 21:43

Me too. Not worth it today as I have 1000 to make up but if it was 200 off I would definitely pace around the living room.

redbedheadd · 05/05/2019 21:43

My Fitbit is definitely undercounting. Today I've walked for four hours with the pram, and my total count is 12,000 steps but it says I've done 7 miles... I'm very confused. Surely it's hard to do 7 miles on a normal day for people?!

Still18atheart · 05/05/2019 21:44

I average 8k steps however don’t have my phone on me all day. The most I’ve done in one day on a sightseeing break to London was 22k steps

ComeOnGordon · 05/05/2019 21:45

There’s so much bullshit boasting on this thread. 7k steps from going to the loo and back 🤔🤔

I’ve been doing trying to get over 10k steps for a year now - on a slow lazy day I get about 1000-2000 steps. I live in a big house and I’ve got 3 kids. So on those days I need to walk just over an hour to get to 10k.

But there are busier days when I’m at work walking a fair bit and busy doing errands that I can get 10k without any extra walking but I know I’ve been busy. In my previous job where I was on my feet all day I bet I could have had 15k.

I know 10k steps is a made up goal to achieve but it motivates me every day to be that bit more active and I’ve been complemented on looking trimmer.

DoneLikeAKipper · 05/05/2019 21:46

I can do 2000 before I get in the shower, in the morning.

See, I could walk to my shower in about 20 steps but I don’t live either in a lighthouse or in a commune that requires a 2 mile hike before reaching ‘the pool of washing’.

Chouetted · 05/05/2019 21:46

I've just walked 1.1 miles in 20 minutes, and logged 2.3k steps.

I don't buy most of the step counts in this post.

To think that 10,000 steps is a lot?
LaurieFairyCake · 05/05/2019 21:49

Oh what a load of piss flaps. I've been on an hours plus dog walk and spent 10 of 14 hours on my feet cleaning.

I've fucking earmed this 11000 steps. It's not 'easy' if you're sedentary.

To think that 10,000 steps is a lot?
rookiemere · 05/05/2019 21:50

I echo the poster who said that 1000 steps is about 10 minutes walking. On the days I am in the office, if I don't do a dog walk, then I get to about 6-7k with walking to and from the car park , up and down stairs etc. If I wfh then even with a lunchtime dog walk I struggle to get over 5k.

Easily do 10k plus on the days I walk in and back from a car park about 1.5 miles away, or at the weekend when I'm exercising and walking the dog.

20k is hard - did it for a few weeks for a step challenge, but did feel as if I was walking most of the day to get there.

waterlego · 05/05/2019 21:50

My target is set at 15,000 a day which I manage most days, but I teach fitness classes and take my dog on a 4-5 mile walk most days so it is pretty easy for me to hit that target. A good day for me is 20k plus.

I’ve only done 7k today as, apart from an hour and a half of housework, I’ve just lazed about all day! I would have thought 10k would be an achievable target for most people, though long hours in a desk job would obviously make it harder.

C8H10N4O2 · 05/05/2019 21:50

If you are ratching up 6-10k whilst "not doing much beyond shopping and pottering around the house" you might want to check your step counters.

www.which.co.uk/news/2018/09/why-are-some-fitness-trackers-so-inaccurate/

I was deeply impressed to achieve a couple of thousand steps whilst my arse was parked firmly in a plane seat recently. I also regularly achieve significant steps whilst also having arse parked on a bumpy train or driving.

OP: If you have a step counter by all means use it to help you get an indication of relative activity or increasing activity but if you notch up several thousand steps pottering around the house you might want to get a new step counter.

LarryGreysonsDoor · 05/05/2019 21:50

I’ve done 15,000 today and that is a day that includes spending an hour in the bath and a nap

fancynancyclancy · 05/05/2019 21:53

hopefulhalf · 05/05/2019 21:56

Today I ran 12k, walked to church and back and tben did 2 X 20 minute walks (parked the car away from town). It is reading just under 20k. That's 18km (10 miles) to achieve that I have been active for more than 2 hours, are people really managing this routinely. A bad day for me is 3-5K, I agree 2,000 is really quite sendentry.
