To think that 10,000 steps is a lot?

I have been feeling quite pleased with myself as I've been easily smashing the recommended step amount of 2,000.

However I've just found out it's in fact 10,000. That seems a lot?

Do others manage that every day?

Work this out, whilst on holiday we did a lot of walking. Both my partner and I have fitbits. We went on walks together, at the end of the day his step count was double mine

I imagine men could get a lot more steps if they wear it on the wrist of their wanking hand.

Dungeondragon15 · 08/05/2019 09:40

I think that my Fitbit is quite accurate as I've checked it a few times but you do have to be quite careful with arm movements.I take it off when driving for example. It doesn't count at all if I'm at the.supermarket pushing a trolley. 10,000 be a lot for me but I'm disabled. Usually aim for about 6000.
I disagree that it's wildly inaccurate with regard to calories. Most of what we burn is due to our basal metabolic rate and has very little to do with exercise. Mine says I burn around 18,000 on a normal day and I rarely do more than 6000 Steps.I think that's about right based on what I eat.

Dungeondragon15 · 08/05/2019 09:43

Norfolkenchancemate that calorie measure is off surely? I did 15k steps yesterday with two long walks and mine says I only burnt 480

I don't think that Norfolk is the one with an inaccurate Fitbit! I think you may have burnt more than 480 cal in one day. I hope so anyway!

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 08/05/2019 09:43

Those are the calories you’ve burned just from exercise though aren’t they Natsku? You’d need to add that to your basal metabolic rate to get your total calorie burn I would think. That would probably get you nearer 2000 calories.

goingonabearhunt1 · 08/05/2019 09:45

I can get to 10,000 if I do a proper walk at lunchtime and get off the bus 2 stops early in the morning. It's also 15 mins from my house to the bus stop so with all that it's around 10,000. I don't believe the people who are clocking thousands around their house, when I stay in all day my steps are in the hundreds and I have to walk to the supermarket to improve the count. On days where I do stuff after work (hobbies, volunteering etc.) it's around 12,000. Holidays me and DP tend to walk around a lot exploring and then it's around 16,000, sometimes more.

goingonabearhunt1 · 08/05/2019 09:45

I have a desk job but no car so that helps.

ContinuityError · 08/05/2019 09:59

I calibrated my Fitbit against MapMyWalk so I can be reasonably confident that my step count / stride length correspond to the distance I’ve walked.

Mominatrix · 08/05/2019 10:04

Dungeondragon, you are wildly overestimating your calories burned in one day. To give you some perspective, Michael Phelps, in the height of his Olympic training in swimming, was “only” burning 8000 calories. You are saying that you, I assume not an Olympic swimmer, burn more than double Michael Phelps? I think not.

MrsPMT · 08/05/2019 10:08

I think some counts are wildly inaccurate and people are kidding themselves, I see people posting their step counts on FB sometimes and think its crazy, I don't know anyone whose walking around at work/home pace would be equivalent to exercise apart from manual workers.

They are good to encourage people to be more active but slow walking 10,000 steps is never going to make anyone fit, fitter yes but not "fit". Much prefer using a distance tracker for proper walks.

Whiskyagogo · 08/05/2019 10:12

I've done over 2000 steps already this morning and I haven't even left the house - just done some housework.

An average day for me is 15,000. I dont have a car and do school runs, shopping, etc all on foot. Still have a wobbly tummy sadly.

ContinuityError · 08/05/2019 10:25

Mominatrix I’m guessing that dungeons had an extra zero sneak in, and calorie count would be 1800 (not 18,000!).

AhhhHereItGoes · 08/05/2019 10:26

I'd average 8k a day (when I had my Fitbit on) maximum I did was 25k which I was very proud of myself for, as I'm not sporty.

Aim for around 5k and if you do more, it's a bonus.

Tessabelle74 · 08/05/2019 10:26

goingonabearhunt1

I've done 1,450 so far today and I've just been walking around the house getting the kids ready for school and to the car on the drive and back!
To make your fitbit more accurate, wear it in your sock then it only counts steps not you doing the washing up!

Natsku · 08/05/2019 10:27

I have no idea how this works, clearly!

CodenameVillanelle · 08/05/2019 10:54

Fitbit calorie counts include your base calories burnt as well as your extra exercise calories. You burn a base level of energy every day just by existing.

Dungeondragon15 · 08/05/2019 11:00

Yes! The calorie count is 1800, not 18,000 .

ScrewyMcScrewup · 08/05/2019 11:19

People don't really believe some of the rubbish they're posting here, right? Like walking 2,000 steps getting ready in the morning? You know your devices aren't accurate, right?

evilharpy · 08/05/2019 11:33

I ran around the house tidying up and doing jobs this morning before work, including multiple times up and down the stairs, in and out to recycling bins etc. Parked about a 5 minute walk from the office. I've now done 1,730 steps and that includes two trips to the loo two floors up (deliberate to make me do more steps), and a walk to the post room to beg for stationery.

I definitely don't get 2,000 steps just from having a shower and getting ready for work.

Keletubbie · 08/05/2019 11:43

I'm disabled and a fatty, but I generally do around 12k a day. This is because I have a dog though!

AhhhHereItGoes · 08/05/2019 11:44

I'm not fit at all by the way.

I have purchased a new Tracker inspired by this thread - thank you!

SisterFarAway · 08/05/2019 12:17

I have just over 4300 so far today, but will easily hit my 10K by the time I'm home. I always go for a (at least) 30 minute walk during lunch, which adds quite a bit. I think it also helps that on either end of my commute I have to walk half a mile to and from the station.
On days where I can't get out during lunch due to the work load I force myself to go for a long walk in the evening.

HBStowe · 08/05/2019 12:24

Office life is honestly a killer.

I commute by train. My office is less than 5 minutes walk from the station. I then have a very busy desk job - sometimes I have time to go for a walk at lunch, but often not. I often work well past five. Then the train home. On days like that I can walk in my front door at 8pm and have done less than 2,000 steps. That isn’t at all unusual.

I try to mitigate this by running three times during the week and then having very active weekends, but I very much doubt I am making up for the damage caused by the amount of time I spend sitting down, and the number of days in which I do virtually no activity at all.

Whiskyagogo · 08/05/2019 12:30

@screwymcscrewup its accurate in my case. I got myself ready, got 3 kids ready, made beds, vacuumed, cleaned 3 bathrooms. House is 3 storeys so a lot of running up and down the stairs. I can easily hit my target of 6000 without leaving the house!

pisspawpatrol · 08/05/2019 12:39

I used to have a job where I was on my feet 7 hours a day, but would still only average 4000 steps a day. My house is small, and it was a 15 mile drive to work. There was some walking about the estate at work, but generally the 7 hours on my feet would be mostly spent in one place dealing with customers so even if you're not sat down all day it can be hard to rack up the steps if you're stuck in one place all day.

Norfolkenchancemate · 08/05/2019 14:13

@IceRebel it gives you a calorie amount for the day, which is what you see, then exercise and food gets taken off or added on to it, it also depends on how long you spend in 'fat burn' heart rate. X
