To think that 10,000 steps is a lot?

I have been feeling quite pleased with myself as I've been easily smashing the recommended step amount of 2,000.

However I've just found out it's in fact 10,000. That seems a lot?

Do others manage that every day?

It's really not that much. I'm on holiday and have had a lazy pool day and have still managed 8k and it's only 4pm.

Tunnockswafer · 10/05/2019 14:56

You’ve walked from your hotel room to the pool and done 8k? Must be a pool in another resort!

CostanzaG · 10/05/2019 15:10

Walked from the room to breakfast, back to the room, to the pool....got up for drinks, lunch etc.
I've averaged between 11-13k every day without too much effort!

Rexelic · 10/05/2019 15:14

How to people clock up so many steps without much activity?.
Just walking here and there doesn't generate so many steps.
one hour of walking only gets me 7000 steps. I do two hours of walking a day to get 14,000 steps.

RedRiverShore · 10/05/2019 15:18

I went on a six mile hike yesterday and my days total was 20000 steps including the hike, walking round the shops and the usual pottering round the house

Tunnockswafer · 10/05/2019 15:20

For me, 10000 steps is 6.7 km, or just over 4 miles.

redbedheadd · 10/05/2019 15:21

I don't understand how people clock up so many steps. I walked fast uphill for 50 mins to get to a baby group then one hour back - it was approx 4.5 miles and that was just under 10,000 . I feel like that was a big walk!

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 10/05/2019 15:22

I walk 3 miles after school run, takes 40 mins then i go to work.Usually works out to be around 14,000.

Rexelic · 10/05/2019 15:23

RedRiverShore - the 6 miles hike would have got you about 14,000 steps. Walking around the shops, say another 5,000 steps if you spent around say 50 minutes walking around. Plus another 1 k just pottering around your house.
That's realistic. What I don't get is people doing school run for 10 minutes and clocking 2000 steps.

Rexelic · 10/05/2019 15:25

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc - are you saying 40 minutes walk gets you 14,000 steps. A 3 mile walk gets me only 7000 steps which takes an hour.

Hiddenaspie1973 · 10/05/2019 15:26

It is alot. Walking 1 mile each way to work, plus around the office and my house I only do 6000.

Rexelic · 10/05/2019 15:27

redbedheadd - exactly what I meant! I want to know the secrets of other people. Plus how do people get so much time to clock up 20 k plus steps if they work and have small kids?

Dungeondragon15 · 10/05/2019 15:32

I expect that some people just move around a lot more even if at work. Where I work it is quite easy to clock up a 4,000 steps by walking from car to office, to a different building for lunch etc, walking up and done stairs to toilet etc. Then if you add walking around the house it is about 6,000 altogether.

lasttimeround · 10/05/2019 18:12

I work from home mostly. If I dont go for a walk or run errands I walk about 2000. 4000 if a trip to the shop and as low as 1500 if I'm unlucky/lazy. It's not good for me. When I go into an office that jumps to 6000. To stay healthy and keep weight in check I work walks into my day to mimic commuting or something or active like being in a office. Otherwise I'm just walking to the fridge and back.

thisisthetime · 10/05/2019 18:26

10k steps is approx 5 miles. Takes about 2 hours. When I first got my Fitbit I watched and checked it religiously. If I changed a nappy it added about 20 steps. If I made a cup of tea it added another 30. I wear it on my left hand and am right handed but changed the settings to say I was left handed and it became a LOT more accurate. Still not perfect but better. I would walk to school and count my steps then check and it would be about right. Was completely off before that. Anyway, what I’m saying is I think some people think they’re doing 10000 steps because of dodgy step counters. My friend thinks she’s done 10000 before 10am. She gets her kids ready for school and does the same school run as me which is about 700 steps total. She’s either running laps around her house or deluded into trusting her Fitbit.

haverhill · 10/05/2019 19:50

I tested my step counter (a LetsFit) yesterday and it was adding lots of rogue steps. Apparently I did 80 steps driving home Hmm. I carried by phone around all day today and clocked up significantly less on its health app than on my step counter. I’ve just ordered an old school pedometer as clearly the wrist counter is inaccurate and I hate carrying my phone around all day.

Dungeondragon15 · 10/05/2019 19:58

My fitbit actually misses a lot of steps when I am around the house and often outside as usually I am carrying something. It also doesn't register when pushing a trolley around the supermarket. It only adds steps when I'm driving so I usually take it off when I get in the car.

You're kidding yourself! Unless you walked to a restaurant several miles away for lunch.

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 10/05/2019 20:50

However I am shattered, and it's not a normal day. I feel all those steps. How people rack in thousands before noon and still sound all bright eyed and bushy tailed is beyond me.

It can't be just how inaccurate the FitBit is either, unless they're having hourly wanks or put it on their cat or something . Someone that doesn't get out of bed is not going to be all flailing arms(enough to clock 10k) either.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 10/05/2019 21:23

30 min brisk walking is around 3000 steps for me.

ScabbyHorse · 10/05/2019 21:35

It is quite a lot. I do manage it sometimes and I walk a lot at work and don't have a car.

Huh?!!!!

I've walked for about 2.5 hours today nonstop which is about 7 miles and done 14,000! I am absolutely shattered! (Having a newborn baby might be a contributor to that, but still)

To think that 10,000 steps is a lot?
ArgyMargy · 11/05/2019 07:45

@Rexelic I think you've added a zero to your total.

duplodancer · 11/05/2019 07:49

I find it weird people are saying it's not a lot and wonder if we have different counters?
I do two hour long fast country walks a day with my dog and get a bit over 10k. If I didn't have a dog I don't think I'd do nearly that much.
I guess it depends if you're able to walk to work / shops / school etc. That would help. Actually that's probably the difference so maybe it's not weird.
