To think that 10,000 steps is a lot?

I have been feeling quite pleased with myself as I've been easily smashing the recommended step amount of 2,000.

However I've just found out it's in fact 10,000. That seems a lot?

Do others manage that every day?

I do average about 6000-8000 without trying. Less on weekends when no set routine. 2000 I would consider the bare minimum just walking around the house!

Rubytinsleslippers · 05/05/2019 20:25

It totally depends on your starting point. I do between 15 and 20,000 a day. But I have an active job, not desk based. 2 kids and constantly on the go.
My mum does 6k a day and is 76. My dad does 12k a day as therapy after a heart attack.
I think 2 k a day is pretty sedentary.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 05/05/2019 20:25

Yes. I easily do 15k a day and sometimesbuo to18k a day but I walk all school/playgroup/nursery runs and often walk to the shops for top up shops. I also don't sit down much at home until the evening

xsquared · 05/05/2019 20:25

I do on most days because I walk to work and back. Not so much during
the weekend.

littlepeas · 05/05/2019 20:26

It's not that much really - you could probably do it with a 20 - 30 minute walk and general pottering around the house, etc.

Nicecupofcoco · 05/05/2019 20:26

I also thought 2000 and felt proud of myself, until dm pointed out its actually 10,000 its very difficult to do, I walk lengths of front room to try and make some steps up!

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 05/05/2019 20:26

I managed 10k a day when working out of the house with no children by making sure I didn't get public transport from doorn to door.

Lazypuppy · 05/05/2019 20:26

I have an office job and do 6000 easily every day.i hit the 10000 mark when i have either been to the gym, or done a second dog walk etc

alltoomuchrightnow · 05/05/2019 20:27

get a job at IKEA! even part time I average about 15 000 a day, more at weekends

Chouetted · 05/05/2019 20:27

It is five miles, so quite far - especially for those of us who don't live in houses so large we walk a mile a day before we step out of doors.

churchthecat · 05/05/2019 20:27

I have a desk job and usually do about 12,000 just walking to work and doing housework.

But if I don't leave the house all day I usually only get about 3000. Are you a SAHM with a car? I can see that might make it harder to get steps.

Sashkin · 05/05/2019 20:27

I walk half an hour to work, then spend a lot of my time at work walking between sites (just across the road, but I usually pop over 2-3 times a day). Plus going for a walk to get lunch.

I spend a lot of time running after my toddler, but my phone is usually not in my pocket so not including any of that.

BarbarianMum · 05/05/2019 20:28

10, 000 is really not that much , it's a good baseline.

cardibach · 05/05/2019 20:28

It’s about 5 miles, so a reasonable amount. My work as a teacher knocks of 7000 easily though, so only a walk of about 1.5 miles, or 30 mins needed to make it up.

Zampa · 05/05/2019 20:28

I've done 7,000 today and I've barely done anything. I drove to the gym and back (steps don't include gym session) and walked from the nearby car park (!) and we then walked to the playground and back home (about 10 minutes either way). The rest were achieved pottering about the house. On a day ferrying the children around, on public transport, I do about 15,000.

SoHotADragonRetired · 05/05/2019 20:28

It's really not that much. I get about 11k on days I'm in the office, less if I'm WFH admittedly, but I've never got under 5k unless I'm actually ill/injured. More like 15-20k at weekends due to chasing kids and walking places.

Purpleartichoke · 05/05/2019 20:29

I have a desk job and we have to travel by car to get anywhere. 10k steps only happens with very concerted effort. The other day just to get to 7000 for the day, I was walking up and down the halls outside dd’s 50 minute appointment.

EugenesAxe · 05/05/2019 20:29

10000 is not a lot. It’s a normal day as long as you have a short walk in it.

15-20k is more representative if you are doing a decent amount of exercise.

Chouetted · 05/05/2019 20:29

I walked eight miles (so 15k steps) recently and felt dreadful. The hills did me in. Good baseline my arse.

SwedishEdith · 05/05/2019 20:29

It's a made up amount though. Like 5 a day veg, 14 units of alcohol etc. Yes, moving is better than not moving but I wouldn't get hung up on the number.

JaynePoole · 05/05/2019 20:30

Did you count your steps all day, or do you mean 2000 from a dedicated walk?

Singlenotsingle · 05/05/2019 20:31

I just wonder how they decided on 10,000 for everybody, regardless of sex, size, age or fitness. And why 10,000? 2000 sounds quite enough.

ASauvignonADay · 05/05/2019 20:31

It's not a huge amount. I average over 10k a day and that's without doing any exercise above day to day work and errands.

To think that 10,000 steps is a lot?
Needallthesleep · 05/05/2019 20:31

Are you using your phone to track, and so is it so few because you don’t take your phone with you everywhere?

Hefzi · 05/05/2019 20:31

I live in a flat and walk to work - if I am wfh it's about 800 steps per day. A regular day (sedentary job) is around 4000. If you are dashing around after young children, aren't chained to a desk and don't pursue additional exercise, I think it's bloody hard to do 10,000. It takes me a lot longer than 30 minutes a PP said too (though tbf, I have a physical disability as well)
