To think that 10,000 steps is a lot?

I have been feeling quite pleased with myself as I've been easily smashing the recommended step amount of 2,000.

However I've just found out it's in fact 10,000. That seems a lot?

Do others manage that every day?

2000 is nothing!

Wheresmyvagina · 05/05/2019 20:50

If I do an hour and a half long walk with the pram non stop it's less than 5000!! Is my Fitbit not working?

Are you keeping your Fitbit hand on the pram?!

Chouetted · 05/05/2019 20:50

Stride length will make a difference too - my stride length is a metre. So I'm probably not even walking 2k steps in a mile.

When people are saying I walk for an hour or whatever, it also depends how fast you walk.
On average, it should work out at 10000 steps being approximately 5 miles give or take.
When I go running, it will take day, 9minutes to run a mile, so in 30 minutes I will have clocked up 6000.
If I walk very briskly it takes me about 15 minutes to do a mile, but if I walk slowly it would take probably 20 minutes plus to cover a mile which is only about 2000 steps.

MsAwesomeDragon · 05/05/2019 20:52

When I wore a Fitbit for a while I would average about 4000 steps on a workday (teacher, thought it would be more as I'm on my feet most of the day, but I don't actually leave the building during the working day and steps round the classroom don't add up to as many as you'd think). I had to really make a concerted effort to get up to 10,000 steps, as I drive to work, have to in order to make cm timings work. I used to have to go for a decent walk every day.

Due to family issues recently it just isn't possible to do a decent length walk every day atm. Not and keep up with family/work commitments, unless I sacrifice sleep, which I'm unwilling to do.

A Fitbit tracks movement by the swing of your arm. If your arm is still as it would be when pushing a pram then it is not tracking the steps accurately. Try attaching it to a part of your body that moves if you are walking with a pram. Smile

I did 7000 steps of gardening yesterday. 2k steps is nothing.

Villanellesproudmum · 05/05/2019 20:53

Ive just made a cup of tea, lounge to kitchen, fridge twice, back to lounge 31 steps.. small house clearly Grin

Lotsofsausage · 05/05/2019 20:53

You have been easily smashing 2k steps because it's not a lot, at all. That's what I track if I have a day at home lazing around.
I used my fitbit today only to walk to the pub and back (30 mins each way, sat down there) and it was 6k steps so I must hit 10k steps every 10 mins walking at an average pace.
Do you work from home? drive everywhere? I would suggest you need to move more if you are physically able to, that level of inactivity could cause health problems in later life.

Chouetted · 05/05/2019 20:53

Actually, that makes the maths easy for me, doesn't it? For me, 1 mile is 1.6k steps. 10k steps is 6.25 miles for me. That's an extra 1.25 miles over the "average" person doing 2k steps to the mile.

Catchingbentcoppers · 05/05/2019 20:53

I've done fuck all all day and done 2,700 steps. I don't think it's that much really.

missconflicted · 05/05/2019 20:53

On an average day I'm usually on 8000 steps but my job is primarily deal based. On weekends I go for long walks with my dogs and if I go for days out that involve a lot of walking (exploring cities or shopping trips and so on) it can push 20,000 but I've never done anymore than that.

I think to really smash it you'd need to be doing some additional exercise at the gym or seriously walking a lot. 2000 steps would literally just be walking around the house for me though :/

AGoodWench · 05/05/2019 20:53

The measuring gadgets are not accurate though.

fancynancyclancy · 05/05/2019 20:54

I normally do 6000 steps walking to the toilet when I wake up.

I don’t. I think it’s quite a lot but maybe my phone doesn’t count them properly. Today I’ve been on my feet for more than 7 hours, I’ve only registered 14.5k steps

BirdandSparrow · 05/05/2019 20:54

I've got a new phone and it's got a stepometer or pedometer or whatever it's called. My job is sedentary, sitting at a desk, working from home but I still really easily manage about 5000 just pottering, walking 2 mins to school pick up and drop off, popping out for bread, taking kids five minutes away for their activities etc.
2000 I'd do just pootling about the house.

Lotsofsausage · 05/05/2019 20:55

And yes ladies with prams - will be giving you an inaccurately low reading - I once pushed a trolley round ikea for a few hours, BF logged 15k steps and I logged 3k - I suppose because my arms were 'gliding' it didn't register!

Samanabanana · 05/05/2019 20:55

I do 1500 steps before I've even left the house in the morning for work! Confused

Tehstean · 05/05/2019 20:55

I suspect there is a difference in the steps recorded depending on whether it is via a fitbit, or an app on a phone in a pocket. Has anyone conducted a test of this?

Also, I don't get why if me and DH take a walk together, the distance recorded is the same (obviously) but so are our step counts when I do about ten steps to his seven. It's all a bit unreliable imo.

Needadvices · 05/05/2019 20:56

i do 5-6000 on day where i don't leave the house!

DefinatelyAWeeGobshite · 05/05/2019 20:56

If I’m at home all day I manage about 5000 to 6000, work days I’m usually averaging 14000 and then more on days we’re out with the kids etc

Sunshineandshowers81 · 05/05/2019 20:57

I aim for over 100k per week

Aberforthsgoat · 05/05/2019 20:57

Accuracy also depends on whether you've got your tracker set up correctly, taking into consideration which arm it's on and length of stride etc...

MotherOfGodFella · 05/05/2019 20:57

My phone records my steps and I wear a tracker on my wrist and they record roughly the same amount give or take a few hundred. But that’s probably because I don’t carry my phone around with me at home.

Maryann1975 · 05/05/2019 20:58

I honestly don't understand people saying they do 7000 in the house?!! Do you live in a mansion?
^this^
I walk 3 miles each day doing the school runs and My step count is consistently around 10,000 steps doing this. How are people walking 7000 steps in their house? How are your homes big enough for this amount of walking? 7000 steps would get me to the other side of our medium sized town, not to the garden to hang out the washing and back.

This thread is just proving to me how inaccurate these pedometer things actually are!
