Peanut butter - sweet or savoury

So, my wife once said that she fancied a savory snack - what's in the house? I suggested some peanut butter on toast, and she'd looked at me like I was a crazy fool. She said peanut butter was definitely sweet. A (not serious) argument ensued, with neither of us being able to settle. This happened about 10 years ago, but the battle still rages.

So - do you consider peanut butter on toast a sweet or savory snack? (Please hurry, my wife is hungry!)

Peanut = savoury
Butter = savoury
Ergo peanut butter is savoury!

Tell your wife she's being U and get a divorce! Grin

Mustbetimeforachange · 05/05/2019 09:29

Savoury

CylindraceousNicholas · 05/05/2019 09:31

Savoury. Jam is sweet. Chocolate spread is sweet....

Catren · 05/05/2019 09:32

But it's salty! So has to be savoury. She's BVU to turn down an offer of peanut butter on toast when she's hungry. I now want some.

Dotty1970 · 05/05/2019 09:32

Savoury definitely, I agree, divorce

DameFanny · 05/05/2019 09:32

Peanuts have a sweet taste and peanut butter often has sugar added so I'm with your wife.

Iruka · 05/05/2019 09:33

Depends on how much sugar is in it. I buy the stuff with no sugar so it is savoury.

AlmostAlwyn · 05/05/2019 09:33

American style peanut butter has sugar added, while (I think) British versions are more likely to just have salt. So depends on the peanut butter!

Also, peanut butter has nothing to do with butter!

outvoid · 05/05/2019 09:34

Depends on the brand. Cheaper PB is definitely sweet, it has far too much sugar to be considered savoury.

DameFanny · 05/05/2019 09:35

Ooh, having said that, you might not taste it the same way - en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amylase - if you don't produce as much amylase in your saliva, things won't taste as sweet

GottenGottenGotten · 05/05/2019 09:35

It depends how you use it.

On its own, savoury.

I'm interested to learn that salted caramel is savoury ;)

PregnantSea · 05/05/2019 09:38

It's both. Spread over apple slices? Sweet. Added to Thai food in sauce? Savoury. Spread on toast? Something inbetween.

AlexaShutUp · 05/05/2019 09:38

Yep, depends on the peanut butter. We buy the savoury type with no sugar added, but some stuff has sugar so that would be sweet.

CIT80 · 05/05/2019 09:39

Savoury ! Unless it’s accompanied with banana and jam and then it’s sweet hmmmmm delicious

GrassIsntGreener · 05/05/2019 09:43

Savoury - I buy the organic non-sugary stuff. I don't like the sun pat style.

lisasimpsonssaxophone · 05/05/2019 09:48

I think it can be either, but I lean towards sweet since I’d happily put it with chocolate, jam or banana but I would never combine it with a savoury flavour like cheese or marmite.

Backseatonthebus · 05/05/2019 09:50

Both. Peanut butter with jam on toast and satay made from the same jar proves it surely.

lisasimpsonssaxophone · 05/05/2019 09:51

Oh that’s true Backseat how could I forget about satay?! And I love carrot sticks dipped in peanut butter with sriacha too.

Ok, that settles it. It’s both.

bangs gavel

CaptainCallisto · 05/05/2019 09:51

Oh but peanut butter and marmite is the king of all toast toppings! At least for me - DH says it's the work of Satan Grin

CuriousaboutSamphire · 05/05/2019 09:56

It's both. Peanuts are both. Butter us used in both. Together they are still both, it just depends how you use it!

BiggerBoat1 · 05/05/2019 09:56

I'd say more sweet than savoury.

Also the work of the devil.

Be a man and get the woman a pork pie.

CecilyP · 05/05/2019 10:00

Depends on the brand. Some have much added sugar, so would be regarded as sweet. Others have none, so are savoury. There was a time she you could only get unsweetened in health food shops but now it's available in all supermarkets. Just read the label, but don't suppose you've kept it after 10 years!

riverislands · 05/05/2019 10:08

Savoury. Whole earth or meridian are, anyway. Even with sliced apples.

Aprillygirl · 05/05/2019 10:30

Has your wife been waiting 10 years for her snack??? It's savoury. Now quick, feed the woman!
