To think I may be able to get a uni photography student to take my wedding photos for free?

We are getting married at the end of the year back in our Uni city where we met. It will be just the 2 of us and our 3 year old (will potentially be calling on some mumsnet witnesses nearer the time!) and the wedding will be pre 12pm.

AIBU to think that a photography student would want the chance to take some wedding photos for an hour or two for their portfolio, and not expect to be paid? Obviously we won't be expecting world class photography, just some nice pics as we won't have any family or friends there to take them. Would it be cheeky to email the uni asking or have other people done this before?

I think it’s unreasonable to expect them to do it for nothing. I’d probably offer £100 for two hours work. But that’s just me.

QueenofallIsee · 04/05/2019 21:53

My sister had student photographers but you absolutely still must pay them - they will have expenses to cover including hiring camera equipment as wedding quality photos will need proper lenses for light. You also need them to edit so it’s days of work. Pay less in reflection of their experience but free is just cheeky

Greatbigterribleshart · 04/05/2019 21:54

You'll regret anyone doing it for free. Even a uni student will ask for compensation for time and things like the software required to edit aren't free.

Magmatic80 · 04/05/2019 21:54

Yes it would be cheeky.

PurpleDaisies · 04/05/2019 21:54

Awful idea. Truly awful. Don’t you think they deserve paying for their time?

Ninkaninus · 04/05/2019 21:55

Actually that’s true, i might offer more for their labour, actually. I’d at least try to budget £200 for it.

pastyballbag · 04/05/2019 21:55

you would be a cheeky fucker of the highest order, don’t even think about it

Tahitiitsamagicalplace · 04/05/2019 21:55

You should offer to pay them something. I don't think a uni student would work for nothing! A vastly reduced rate, sure. They still have skills, equipment, experience, education, etc behind them. It's not just "point and click".

OneThreadOnly0101 · 04/05/2019 21:55

Shock You definitely need to pay.

MightyAtlantic · 04/05/2019 21:55

Yes, YABU. If you want a photographer, even one who's still studying, you need to pay them fairly.

Bunbunbunny · 04/05/2019 21:55

Complete cheeky f

greenlloon · 04/05/2019 21:55

you cant ask people to work for nothing wtf

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 04/05/2019 21:56

Of course they won't do it for free!!

AbsentmindedWoman · 04/05/2019 21:57

Please pay them something and don't devalue their work by asking for it free.

TheCrowFromBelow · 04/05/2019 21:57

yes it would be a bit cheeky- they’d have costs including travel.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 04/05/2019 21:57

Pay them.

I work at a university and we often use students in Illustration, Graphic Design, Acting etc. We always pay them. They are trainee professionals.

Disappearedtothe80s · 04/05/2019 21:58

You shouldn't have to pay the going the rate if they are student but at least pay enough to cover their costs.

InspectorClouseauMNdivision · 04/05/2019 21:58

I "love" this 'It's not really for free. You get experience and something in your portfolio" crap.
Pay someone fgs. No matter how big or small wedding this is exactly same CF stuff like all the website, paintings, sculpture etc "you get experience" crap.

InspectorClouseauMNdivision · 04/05/2019 21:59

Woth that out of the way.

Congrats and good luck!

PinkiOcelot · 04/05/2019 21:59

You would be very unreasonable.

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 04/05/2019 22:00

Pay them you cheeky bastard.

Juanaiguana · 04/05/2019 22:01

Pay up

RezCowgirl · 04/05/2019 22:01

They may be studying the craft but don't be so insulting to ask them to give up their time, effort and final product for nothing.

Passmethecrisps · 04/05/2019 22:01

Why stop at a student photographer? What about a student dress maker, student florist, musicians?

You must know that this is a really mean suggestion? People’s time is not free. I know from bitter experience that even when things are free people’s expectations are not. If you value having photographs then pay for them. If you don’t want to pay from them ask close pals to take some iPhone pictures and share them to a closed group.

ILiveInSalemsLot · 04/05/2019 22:01

Photography portfolios often contain some really artistic and clever photos, often challenging the norms with interesting themes. Im not sure many students want to include some standard wedding pics in their portfolio.
