How can the local election results be interpreted as support for Brexit?

Given the tories have lost 1200 seats, labour lost 60 ish and ukip lost 30 ish (all pro brexit parties) and the lib dems have gained 600 and greens 250 (both remain parties), why on earth are both TM and JC interpreting this as the public wanting brexit 'delivered?'.
Surely if there was a strong pro brexit vote ukip would gain and the remain supporting parties would lose?
I would take this result as support for a second referendum at the very least.
Am I missing something or is this just another example of the pair of them refusing to accept the obvious?

They can't - unless you're taking the electorate for fucking idiots. Then all things are possible.

Iggly · 03/05/2019 21:25

It’s just then trying to use this as an excuse for ploughing on with the shit show that is Brexit.

DoneLikeAKipper · 03/05/2019 21:26

I think the right wing are chalking up their loses to many Vote Leavers spoiling their ballots with ‘we want Brexit’ slogans, instead of accepting they are utter shit parties (and Labour), that are so incompetent couldn’t roll a ball downhill without fucking it up at the moment.

ConfCall · 03/05/2019 21:27

Agree with you OP.

I think it’s a shame that hardworking local Labour and Conservative councillors have lost their seats through no fault of their own - they have zero influence on Brexit, unlike MPs. They should blame May/Corbyn.

Iggly · 03/05/2019 21:28

I’ll add, I spoilt my ballot paper. Not because of Brexit but because I only had UKIP/Tory or independent (ex Tory) to choose from. Nothing to do with Brexit.

How can the local election results be interpreted as support for Brexit?
contentedsoul · 03/05/2019 21:45

Is the poor turn out simply because voters no longer see any point in voting?
We had a democratic vote during the referendum, the result was never and still hasn't been accepted. little wonder then that no one bothered to vote yesterday.

So clearly boycotting the right to vote was the publics way of supporting Brexit, by sticking two fingers up at Westminster.

lljkk · 03/05/2019 22:00

Baffled me too.
"The people" voted for Greens & LibDems b/c they are angry that Tories & Labour didn't deliver Brexit fast enough!

Okay

I guess MEP elections will be interesting.

I counted votes last night... some people did write things like BREXIT NOW! to spoil their ballot, but there weren't lots of these. Just many wrote NONE to spoil the ballot. I guess it could be twice as many spoilt ballots than usual, but still a very tiny total% of total ballots I saw.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 03/05/2019 22:05

lljkk

A few posters on another thread have explained that they spolit their vote for other reasons

So i agree very small %, and probably even smaller brexit %

StepAwayFromGoogle · 03/05/2019 22:06

I'm with you, OP, I couldn't work out how on earth they came to that conclusion either. I think a PP has it right that they're just looking for any old excuse to plough on. It makes me cross.

BambooBoobam · 03/05/2019 22:12

Surely leavers wouldn’t vote for another party to show they weren’t happy with how Brexit was going? They’d just spoil their ballot or not bother to vote at all.

I voted Green to show my support for remaining in the EU. In my town, Greens gained a seat from Conservatives. I’ve only ever known it to be two Conservative seats.

In the next village over, both seats were Green gains from Cons. In other neighbouring towns/villages, LDs did very well. Still a majority Tory council though Sad

Honeyroar · 03/05/2019 22:17

In my local area the candidates were either very young and inexperienced, seemed completely hopeless or were promoting local things I completely disagree with. So for the first time ever I didn't vote. Nor did my husband. Nothing to do with brexit. Usually I would always vote for the best of a bad bunch, this year there didn't even seem to be one of those!

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 03/05/2019 22:23

Surely leavers wouldn’t vote for another party to show they weren’t happy with how Brexit was going?

Apparently the people currently running the country believe exactly that

Though to be fair they seem to believe that leavers would vote for a remain party just to show exactly how pissed of they are

My dad would vote the brexit party if they stood...

bewaretheidesofmarch · 03/05/2019 22:23

In my home town it was all about Brexit because we did not want it watered down. There's a lot of anger out there.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 03/05/2019 22:23

A couple of people have said that honey

bewaretheidesofmarch · 03/05/2019 22:24

And we mainly voted independents in (the real ones, not the type who just jump ship and pretend they're independent)

Lifeover · 03/05/2019 22:27

Haven’t a clue! I’m
Very pro Brexit but voted green as we have a bloody good green councillor- it was local issues that mattered. I’ll be voting pro Brexit at the Eu elections

longwayoff · 03/05/2019 22:28

And UKIP lost lots of seats Grin. So not all bad.

KennDodd · 03/05/2019 22:30

@contentedsoul

Wasn't the turnout up on last time?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/05/2019 22:31

YANBU.

LoveCatzzz · 03/05/2019 22:32

Yanbu.

KennDodd · 03/05/2019 22:37

My council is still packed to Tory Brexiteers sadly. Two of them have fucking dementia as well. Not even joking, two of our elected councillors now have dementia and the average age has gone up to over 80. Some (not many) younger people did stand but weren't successful.

TalkinPaece · 03/05/2019 22:40

Candidate quality ....

quizqueen · 03/05/2019 22:43

The low turn out of voters, in general, made the statement that they think democracy is dead so why bother voting at all. UKIP did not stand in every ward so their percentage gain would be lower anyway. The Lib Dems and Greens, who stood more candidates, gained because Remain voters were happy to turn up to vote because everything is going their way at the moment (re Brexit).

TalkinPaece · 03/05/2019 22:55

quizqueen
because Remain voters were happy to turn up to vote because everything is going their way at the moment (re Brexit).
Tories and Labour have both said today that they are committed to Brext.
Could you explain how it fits
