To remove our en-suite?

We’ve just moved to a new house. Got a bit of money to it up how we like. It’s got an en-suite in the master bedroom that I think takes up a lot of room. I’m not overly fussed about en-suites. I don’t see why builders are so obsessed with cramming one in. Our old one fitted the room ok so we left it. This one is built almost like a cupboard into the room. We would gain a fair amount of room if we took it out. It’s not that functional and we don’t like the suite or decor in it. Would it be a problem though if we ever came to sell? What type of trades people would we need to sort it out if we wanted it removed. Have attached picture of outside to give a rough idea of what it looks like??

This always puts me off new builds too. I'd rather have a larger bedroom.

wonderingsoul · 02/05/2019 20:10

What would you use that spare space for?

Personally I would leave it and do it up.
I would love my own personal shower and toilet.

BlessYourCottonSocks · 02/05/2019 20:12

Watching with interest as we have a large old Victorian house with one bathroom upstairs and 6 bedrooms. There is room to add an en-suite to 2 of the larger bedrooms, but like you I'd rather have the room and it would probably make them odd shaped.

I do sometimes wonder whether we should do so that it would be easier to sell when we decide to. I'll be interested to see what most folks think.

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 02/05/2019 20:12

We’d be left with a small alcove type space that we could put some draws/wardrobe in without taking up much room and have a larger bedroom

We love our en suite, but then we share our home with three teenage boys.

Unless you are likely to sell in 5 years, have the house how you want it.

DramaAlpaca · 02/05/2019 20:14

I love my en-suite shower room & wouldn't want to be without it. It was especially useful when we had three teenagers at home hogging the main bathroom.

Nifflerbowtruckle · 02/05/2019 20:16

I'd prefer a walk in wardrobe over an en suite.

Eliza9919 · 02/05/2019 20:17

I don't get this obsession with en-suite's either. I know someone with a new build 2 up, 2 down that has a toilet downstairs, then you go upstairs and there's a bathroom, a bedroom and then another bedroom with an en-suite. Isn't that ratio a bit
Squewed? I'm sorry, I've forgotten how to spell that 😂

sluj · 02/05/2019 20:18

That doesn't look odd in the room. Personally I'd leave it there, it's a massive selling point and convenient. I won't ever buy another house unless it has an ensuite and I dont think I'm the only one.

hibbledibble · 02/05/2019 20:19

How many bedrooms and bathrooms does the house have? If the ratio isn't right then it will put off buyers.

An en suite would generally add value. If it is your forever home or you are happy to take the hit when selling on then go for it

hibbledibble · 02/05/2019 20:20

Personally, I love my en suite, and wouldn't buy another house unless it had one, unless it was something exceptional.

Yogagirl123 · 02/05/2019 20:21

Couldn’t be without an en-suite bathroom. As above our two teenage sons have the family bathroom, I wouldn’t be too keen on sharing a bathroom with them! Downstairs loo is used by us all. I think you could lose some value on the property by losing the en-suite.

EmmaC78 · 02/05/2019 20:21

I would leave it too. I love having an en-suite especially if there are children in the house.

spanieleyes · 02/05/2019 20:21

It depends on how many bedrooms.
1or 2 bedrooms-bathroom but no ensuite needed.
3-4 bedrooms-bathroom and ensuite useful,
4-5 bedrooms-bathroom and ensuite essential,
5+bedrooms-minimum of bathroom and 2 en-suites!

Butterymuffin · 02/05/2019 20:24

Love an en suite too. Extra bathroom facilities are always good.

PolarBearBubbles · 02/05/2019 20:25

I'd leave it and re do. I wouldn't even consider buying a house without a master en-suite.

ControversialFerret · 02/05/2019 20:26

I loathe en-suites unless there is a really decent amount of room available to accommodate them.

I'd only leave it in if there was one other bathroom. Having two loos is very handy!

JenMumma · 02/05/2019 20:27

Can we see the inside ? 🙂

DropZoneOne · 02/05/2019 20:34

Do you open the door and there is z tiny sink, tiny shower and your elbows coukd touch the walls whilst sat on the loo? Those are pointless ensuites IMO, not to mention that smells permeate the bedroom.

Bringbackthestripes · 02/05/2019 20:35

I would rather not have an en suite. An extra bathroom to clean and DH regularly stinks out our bathroom. I’d feel like he was tainting where we slept if we had an ensuite for him to stink up too.

Nnnnnineteen · 02/05/2019 20:38

Can't bear an en suite. If get rid and put in a beautiful walk in wardrobe if space, one of those lovely ones with shoe racks and lots of space for scarves and bags.

As PP has pointed out, I’d look at your bedroom to bathroom ratio. If removing it will leave you for 1 loo for 3 or more beds then I definitely would leave it as is.

Haworthia · 02/05/2019 20:44

I live in a house with one bathroom so definitely understand the need for more than one toilet in a house Grin but en suites do gross me out. Shitting in the corner of your bedroom indeed!

I think they’re only acceptable if the master bedroom is really big. Otherwise it’s a poky little bog encroaching on your bedroom space.
