To remove our en-suite?

We’ve just moved to a new house. Got a bit of money to it up how we like. It’s got an en-suite in the master bedroom that I think takes up a lot of room. I’m not overly fussed about en-suites. I don’t see why builders are so obsessed with cramming one in. Our old one fitted the room ok so we left it. This one is built almost like a cupboard into the room. We would gain a fair amount of room if we took it out. It’s not that functional and we don’t like the suite or decor in it. Would it be a problem though if we ever came to sell? What type of trades people would we need to sort it out if we wanted it removed. Have attached picture of outside to give a rough idea of what it looks like??

If you're thinking about selling soon then maybe leave the ensuite. I prefer an ensuite over a big room. Really don't like sharing bathrooms especially with visitors!

Rach182 · 02/05/2019 21:28

Oh just seen your update sorry. If you're not looking you sell and would need to replace the ensuite anyway then best to get rid of it if that would make you happier.

Clearyweary · 02/05/2019 21:31

Clearly a divided opinion on this thread! Personally, I love having lots of toilets. My current house has 5. Means there is always one free regardless of who’s occupying the others! Grin

Surfingtheweb · 02/05/2019 21:35

I love my en suite, a house that has one would be more attractive to me then one that doesn't.

Warpdrive · 02/05/2019 21:37

I hate en suites and it would put me off buying a house if there was one there.
If I were single it wouldn't bother me but I definitely prefer my DH keeping his business far away from the bedroom!

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 02/05/2019 21:48

Update...here are pics...
One way or another we have to do something with it. The current configuration doesn’t work. Shower is awful sink is crap. So spend the money sorting it out or rip it out and nicer big bedroom??!

That's not bad, it has a window at least.

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 02/05/2019 21:59

Can't stand en-suites. Pointless, naff and the last thing I want to hear in the morning is my beloved emptying his bowels.

An extra bathroom, fabulous, but keep it away from my bedroom, thank you.

DontCallMeShitley · 02/05/2019 22:00

If you think that's bad you should see ours.

Why not live with it for a while and see how you feel later? It's not modern but it looks very functional. You could change it for something really glamorous.

BoundByBriars · 02/05/2019 22:04

I don’t like en suites either! As long as we have a visitor toilet downstairs (that’s a must) I’d rather have less bathrooms to clean, thank you!

But then there’s only 3 of us.

sluj · 02/05/2019 22:04

I dont hear anything from my ensuite except when the shower is on Smile
Nowadays there are definitely different standards in terms of number of toilets/bathrooms per resident compared to older houses. I don't understand why anyone would want to have less bathrooms, especially just to fit in another wardrobe.
I live in a house with two teenagers though and it's a real bonus to have a choice of bathrooms with privacy for me.

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 02/05/2019 22:07

We have a perfectly acceptable downstairs loo and one family bathroom. Plus the en-suite that may or may not be staying!

BuggyWanker · 02/05/2019 22:08

I HATE en-suites. Had one in my last house and the fan woke me up every time DH went for a piss in the night. Also woke me up when DH showered in the morning and stank out the room when DH had a shit and left the door open and probably vice versa .

I’d go for a family bathroom and second shower room-w/c on the ground floor any day.

coral13 · 02/05/2019 22:11

I love ours but just to mention... If you do take out a bathroom, it's likely to affect the value if your house. You might not care but it's worth a thought.

stucknoue · 02/05/2019 22:11

If you have 4+ bedrooms not having an en-suite could be an issue, but if you don't plan to sell that doesn't matter

Honeyroar · 02/05/2019 22:15

It actually looks better from inside than I thought it would. Generally speaking I hate tiny en suites crammed into bedrooms that are too tiny to have them. I like decent sized en suites in a decent sized room.

Op you sound like you'd really prefer a bigger room, so do it. The plumbing would always be there if someone wanted to bang up a partition wall and put it back later..

sluj · 02/05/2019 22:18

I think when the DC get to be teenagers and everyone wants a shower before going to work/school, it's really good to have more than one place to shower or wash. Its not just about the toilets, it's the washing facilities.
How many people are there in your house OP?

7Days · 02/05/2019 22:24

I think that's a great ensuite.
It's not the pokey windowless cupboard type.
Implement a no poo policy and you're golden

SD1978 · 02/05/2019 22:25

If you've already got two bathrooms- get rid and build a feck off walk in wardrobe. Much more useful than being able to crap in your bedroom.

IncrediblySadToo · 02/05/2019 22:29

It’s a teeny bit dated, but it’s not exactly an avocado suite dated 🤣

You could put a bigger sink in, but surely that’s fine for hand washing & teeth cleaning?!

If you redid it, you could make it really nice, it’s not that small a space.

But you’re the one living there and don’t plan to move for a long time, so 🤷🏻‍♀️

I wouldn’t remove the door and wall though, I’d just make it a walk in wardrobe with the door opening INTO the bedroom.

IncrediblySadToo · 02/05/2019 22:35

They don’t have two bathrooms. They have one bathroom and a downstairs toilet.

It’s never going to be a ‘feck off walk in wardrobe’. It’ll be a nice, small semi walk in wardrobe with a window for natural light

You’re no more ‘crapping in your bedroom’ than you are in a family bathroom. It has a door and partition walls like every other room in the house🙄

BarbarAnna · 02/05/2019 22:37

How can people loathe them?

Couple of questions.

When people have sex, don’t they nip to the loo after? And ermm, empty?

And, do people not sleep naked and sometimes need to pee in the night?

Which is surely not compatible with guests and teenagers?

Or is that just me?

SunnyCoco · 02/05/2019 22:38

Yep I'm on Team Ditch It

I'd rather have a nice big airy bedroom than a toilet in the corner. Never understand the love for en suites

Ragwort · 02/05/2019 22:46

Get rid of it, I do have an en suite but fortunate in that the bedroom is large with an en suite and walk in wardrobe. DH doesn’t share the en suite (or bedroom for that matter Grin). And I can’t stand those corner showers, impossible to clean the doors and ‘runners’.

Kedgeree · 02/05/2019 22:47

We have two bedrooms, one en-suite and one house bathroom. Only DH and I live here so we use one bathroom each which works beautifully. I get the point about shitting in the bedroom, but on balance I'd rather have the en-suite than not. We did remove the downstairs loo as that was like shitting in the corner of the sitting room (all open plan) so we turned it into a utility room instead.
If you're planning on staying in this property you should have it to suit yourselves, not some imaginary buyers in the unknown future. We're about to redo both our bathrooms and we won't be having a bath in either, which according to popular opinion on MN will make our house unsellable. Meh 🤷‍♀️. It's my house and I'll have it as I like.
