To have left him stuck in the cellar?

We have a new starter at work who is a pain in the arse. He’s shadowing me and constantly disappears and is always off exploring rather than doing what he should be doing. This morning we were in the office and he asked me where he should put clinical waste. I told him we put it in the cellar but that we didn’t have time to do it now as we had to go out of office. He said he’d be quick. I said no because it takes ages to get down there, he’d need codes for the lift down there, and two different doors. He grabbed a pen and paper and asked me for the codes. Getting frustrated I wrote down the codes and told him to be really quick and off he goes.

15 minutes later he’s still not back so I check time and decide if he isn’t back by half past I’d do without him. Half past came so I packed up and headed to my car. I’d just set off when I got a frantic phone saying he was stuck in one of the rooms in the cellar. I told him to repeat the code he had and it was right so I said he’d just have to keep trying. I drove off. 5 minutes later he started ringing again. I ignored it. All in all 4 missed calls. I rang him back and he admitted he was in a different room and that’s why the code wasn’t working. I told him I’d be back at lunch. It was 9.45 at the time. He started getting irate saying it stunk down there, it was freezing, pitch black and the wind was hammering on the fire doors. I left him until 11. AIBU as he got stuck because he went where he wasn’t supposed to go?

This sounds a plot fro a film or TV. COuld you not have phoned someone else in the building to help him?

Breastfeedingworries · 02/05/2019 14:50

Bit harsh, I think 20 minutes would of been enough time to let him suffer.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 02/05/2019 14:51

This couldn’t be a reverse, could it - the OP is actually the new colleague who was left in the cellar, and wants to know if they are in the right to be furious?

Because I cannot imagine anyone being stupid enough to gloat on a public forum about leaving a colleague locked in a cellar. What adult would do these things?

Nanny0gg · 02/05/2019 14:51

If you didn't want him to go down there you shouldn't have given him the codes.

But how did he get in if he had the wrong one?

I think your training may need updating.

KittenMittens1 · 02/05/2019 14:52

Look at all the snowflakes haha.

he's a grown ass man, snooping where he shouldn't be! I find it hilarious!

NorthernRunner · 02/05/2019 14:52

This will be in the daily mail before you know it

SoupDragon · 02/05/2019 14:53

Are you usually a bully, OP?

HillRunner · 02/05/2019 14:53

I also can't believe that pp's have suggested that the OP should complain to her manager about him!

It is the OP's job to look after the new starter. She gave him permission to go to the cellar when she gave him the codes, then left him locked in for 2 hrs (around 9am - 11am) when he ended up in the wrong room (pretty easy to do when you don't know the building layout imo).

She has absolutely no grounds to complain about him, and she'd be a fool to do so. If there was no time she should have said so, not allowed him to go down. It's all on her.

Sparklingbrook · 02/05/2019 14:53

Oh yes, the Daily Mail will love this. Grin

BuildBuildings · 02/05/2019 14:54

This is disgusting bullying behaviour. You mentioned clinical waste I hope to god you don't deal with people in your job. Its fucking sad you'd think this was funny. I'm actually stunned an adult would do this then brag about it online!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 02/05/2019 14:54

@KittenMittens1 - even ‘grown ass men’ can be the victims of bullying, and have the right to be cross and upset if a colleague leaves them locked in a cellar for hours. Anyone would have the right to be upset by this - and men have as much right to feelings as women do.

alligatorsmile · 02/05/2019 14:54

That is an appalling way to treat a dog, let alone a human being.

NorthernRunner · 02/05/2019 14:55

OP doesn’t have grounds to complain about the new starter, he sounds overly keen and a bit OTT but he was obviously just after OPs respect and approval. Doubt he will be looking for that from now on!

KittyInTheCradle · 02/05/2019 14:55

Couldn't you have at least asked another member of staff to go get him?

I can see why you did it but it's definitely not very nice!

JaneDoe8000 · 02/05/2019 14:55

No, not unreasonable. He lied to you and needs to learn his lesson that there are consequence to lying and not doing as you're told.

And he sounds like a twat.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 02/05/2019 14:55

Oh - and in my opinion, only bullies or nasty people laugh when other people are badly treated.

TheGrey1houndSpeaks · 02/05/2019 14:56

And he sounds like a twat. Based on what? Confused

JaneDoe8000 · 02/05/2019 14:57

Not obvious at all. How does doing the exact opposite of what you're being told to do earn somebody's respect?

TheGrey1houndSpeaks · 02/05/2019 14:57

Op gave him the code...

managedmis · 02/05/2019 14:57

Where do you work?

Castle Greyskull?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 02/05/2019 14:58

Ah well. Looks like both of you will be searching for new jobs!

How on Earth could you think you were acting reasonably?

DishingOutDone · 02/05/2019 14:58

Who in their right mind would want respect from a colleague like the OP?

Mammyloveswine · 02/05/2019 14:59

This is horrible. Im shocked OP. What a nasty thing to do.

What did he say when you finally returned?

Saavhi · 02/05/2019 14:59

only bullies or nasty people laugh when other people are badly treated

this

alligatorsmile · 02/05/2019 15:00

This must a reverse, surely, no-one would think this was acceptable behaviour and wonder if they were being unreasonable or not. You did something dangerous, unprofessional, nasty and personal. I hope he reports you.
