In hospital! can’t sleep!

I had surgery at 3pm yesterday then spent hours being sick. I’m feeling super rough and just want to sleep. A lady has just been admitted at 3am and has coughed like a seal for half an hour. Then she has gone out for a fag to “soothe the cough”
Now she is watching something on YouTube which is really monotonous and shouty!
Arrrgh!!!!
I have ear plugs on and a pair of beats and I can still hear it!

Urgh nothing worse than being in hospital unable to sleep. I went days without sleep before and after I had my baby. Not being able to sleep is like torture. Hope you get some shut eye soon!

b0bb1n · 02/05/2019 03:19

Oh and hope you get well soon! Flowers

Poor you. It’s no fun being kept awake in hospital after surgery.

I hope you feel better soon. Will you be allowed to go home tomorrow?

I am desperately trying to sleep as working in a polling statin all day tomorrow but still wide awake! No idea how I will get through 15 hours of sitting handing out ballot slips 😁

Neverplayleapfrogwithaunicorn · 02/05/2019 03:29

Yay the nurses have taken her to a side ward xx

Me too - I'm in hospital after surgery and I can't sleep. Am not due any more pain killers for a while and so am writhing in quiet agony. I'm going to be here for a while yet so am going to try and read for a bit now and then sleep later. Maybe some soothing sleep music on Spotify through headphones might help?

heychick · 02/05/2019 03:45

Me too - am on day 16 on a respiratory ward - a cacophany of coughing. It's just too light & busy in here... However, home tomorrow, pneumonia under control Smile. Can't wait for my comfy bed and black out curtains!

Hope that your recovery goes well, both of you.

Kelpies · 02/05/2019 04:26

I feel your pain! Last night people were shouting and refusing to get into bed till 0330 and tonight there are at least 3x snorers in different parts of the room snoring at different times! To make it worse I've manage to lose one of my ear plugs.. can't wait to get home!!!

Bestfootforward1 · 02/05/2019 04:58

Get well soon x

Yuck. Unfortunately hospitals are not the best place to rest.

My dad was admitted for an appendectomy several years ago. One night there was an older lady on the ward who kept insisting that she needed to pee and a few other people who got wound up. Dad said the poor nurse was just about reduced to tears by the end of the night. He said to her, "No offense, but the inmates are running the prison tonight." She agreed with him.

I hope you are soon well enough to go home.

Happynow001 · 02/05/2019 06:29

Hope you can get to the peace if your own home and bed soon OP. I've never understood how people can be so inconsiderate to others in an open ward. 🌹

Neverplayleapfrogwithaunicorn · 02/05/2019 21:53

They let me home this morning
We had An insect infestation in the ward at 3am so the room was shut off. Me and another lady ended up on trolleys then a day room.

Hope you guys get well soon xxx

When I was in hospital earlier this year there were 2 elderly senile patients who screamed and wailed, tried to pull out each other's canulas during the night. They kept getting out of bed and wandering around the ward.
I tried desperately to sleep and at one point I opened my eyes and one of them was standing right next to me.
It gave me a fright!
Then they both wet their beds and the nurses had to strip their beds and clothes.
I did feel sorry for them (and the nurses) but it was an exhausting experience- hopefully never to be repeated so I do share your frustration!

Redskyandrainbows67 · 02/05/2019 22:14

Hospitals are such a shit place to rest and recover - I really hope there’s a step change in health care in the next few years
The only way I’ve ever slept in a hospital is with an infectious virus (flu, Rsv etc) and been quarantined in an individual side room.

SolitudeAtAltitude · 02/05/2019 22:15

Hope you get out soon. Can you wear headphones and just listen to your own music?

I was in hospital last year and placed in the male geriatric ward. I did not sleep! 7 men snoring, farting and coughing

Promised myself I would never go to hospital again Grin

All the best OP, get well soon. Take care

Bringbackthestripes · 02/05/2019 22:21

Glad you are home. I had to spend 2 nights in post op recently and the first night I didn’t even get 5 mins sleep-it was awful- and I was in a single room! I played music through my earbuds the second night to drown out all the noise so I managed the odd snooze. I pity anyone in for long periods.

LeukaeLucky · 02/05/2019 22:24

I'm very fortunate to be in a single room and desperate to get a bit of sleep between the various visits for my obs and so on. I keep complaining how tired I am but nothing compared to those dorms you were in. I remember going mad when I had my babies. Between the screens phone calls visitors cried and crazy mums singing to their babies at 4 am I was losing it

LuluJakey1 · 02/05/2019 22:26

What kind of insect infestation at 3 am?

Davros · 02/05/2019 22:42

My top tip is ask early for sleeping pills as a Dr has to prescribe them AND if anyone plays noise through phone or TV ask a member of staff to tell them to use headphones. It seems to have become "normal" behaviour to play noise on phones in particular without ear/headphones. I've had words, in the nicest possible way, with people in restaurants several times grrrr

Meangirls36 · 03/05/2019 12:26

If you can't sleep and can get annoyed enough to complain your not too Ill. Take comfort in the fact that you are ok. Doesn't really help though when it takes them literally ten hrs to discharge you. Hospitals are the worst.

That’s a stupid thing to say
