Am I wrong to wonder what on earth is going on with these people with their bits out? I’m on holiday and they’re walking around bold as brass with their parts on display. I wasn’t expecting this when I went to the beach. There don’t seem to be any rules that say it isn’t OK. I asked a lady in one of the beachside shops.
Fully expecting to be shouted at here by the way Smile Long time Mumsnetter but can’t for the life of me find my old login details.

tisonlymeagain I don’t know what / where studland is, sorry, but it sounds a bit creepy from what you have described.

We accidentally rented a villa next to a naturists hotel last time we stayed in Fuerteventura. It attracted a mature clientele.

FuzzyPuffling · 30/04/2019 17:44

I knew someone would jump on the "old" comment.

Fact is, most people on nudists beaches are of a certain age, and maybe it's ageist but if I've got to be presented with someone's danglies I'd rather it not be an Octogenarian's wrinkly scrotum. Until I am an Octogenarian myself.

Yes, you're right, it IS ageist (and the OP has apologised for their comment). The point of nudity is (I think) not about showing off a fabulous body, but about feeling free and unhindered. Which are feelings all of us should have access to, if we so desire.

SirGawain · 30/04/2019 17:44

naked in the sauna but naked dining does not appeal.
If it did you'd be safest to order the chilled soup!

RedSheep73 · 30/04/2019 17:44

Grin That has made me laugh! my parents used to drag me to naturist beaches as a child, I didn't much like it then and certainly wouldn't do it now, but if it's allowed on that beach then it's allowed. Close your eyes? It's only bodies.

femidom12 · 30/04/2019 17:46

If you've got it, flaunt it!

eyeswideshit · 30/04/2019 17:50

What about periods, do they tuck the tampon string away? What do men do if they get an erection? Is there an etiquette to bending over? Do they feel comfortable sitting on a chair that's previously been occupied by a bare arse?

Periods - Wear clothes or tuck the string away.

Erection - Cover up until its gone (but I've never seen it happen).

Bending etiquette - None that I've been taught.

Sitting down - All naturists carry a towel to sit so we don't worry about arse germs.

Dogparty · 30/04/2019 17:52

I hate to see random naked people, I don’t want to see that thanks! I’m such a prude when it’s in public. Like someone said upthread, bikinis or shorts are hardly stifling.

eyeswideshit · 30/04/2019 17:53

But why do people enjoy doing it? What is wrong with a swimming costume. It's just gross imo, I've no desire to see naked strangers. There must be a perv/flashing element to it I reckon

Swim naked and then try going back to wearing a costume. It's horrible, the material clings to your skin and takes an age to dry, swimming naked feels much better. If you have no desire to see naked strangers then don't look. I do it because I enjoy the feeling of freedom, and the sun on my skin, not because I'm a pervert or get a kick out of anyone seeing my body. It's for me, no one else.

DoNotWorry · 30/04/2019 17:54

Studland is definetly not creepy. It's a lovely unspoiled beach in Dorset in an area known for it's natural beauty. For many years nudity has been permitted in certain areas. It is now managed by the National Trust and they decided to allow the practice to continue.

tisonlymeagain · 30/04/2019 17:55

It's in Dorset @WhaleMusic

leckford · 30/04/2019 17:57

Germans? They are very keen on this

tisonlymeagain · 30/04/2019 17:58

I am sorry @DoNotWorry not my experience at all. The beach, which is vast and extensive is fine - not overcrowded, generally people minding their own business, getting on with life on the beach just like anyone else and you are quite right, it's a beautiful area, one of my favourites, but the naked men, standing alone, basically just posing in the dunes? That was creepy!

WitchitaMickey · 30/04/2019 17:59

I've been on that beach in Fuerteventura, it was lovely! I gave being naked a go but being incredibly pale and tattooed (not to mention awkward and uncomfortable looking) I did get a few looks from the others. I assume they were regulars judging by the depth of tan Grin watch out for the waves over there, they sneak up on you!

Gruzinkerbell1 · 30/04/2019 18:00

There’s a nudist stretch on the beach in brighton. It’s behind a high dune of pebbles, but once in a while an attention seeker nudist will stray across the boundary and stand proudly with their danglies on show to all the families passing by.

You also get the old pervs single fully clothed older men wandering up the dune for an ogle.

None of it appeals.

fotheringhay · 30/04/2019 18:01

This was enforced on me as a child/teenager on holiday with my Dad and stepmum. I didn't feel I could say no due to circumstances (hard to explain), but I used to claim it was my period as often as possible so I could legitimately keep my knickers on.

I felt extremely vulnerable, absolutely aware of being perved over, and it gave me boundary issues for at least a decade.

Please don't do this to kids.

LazyFace · 30/04/2019 18:02

I've been on a nudist beach before, nothing special really, it's way nicer than wearing a plastic swimming costume of bikini.

CamillafromCobham · 30/04/2019 18:02

You get a lot of nudists on beaches in Mykonos. I remember seeing a set of balls swollen up like balloons on old guy. I was in the low end of traumatised. You can’t unsee that.

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 30/04/2019 18:06

It must be something to do with Fuerteventura because DP and I stumbled upon a beach with nudists on (a quiet beach but not solely nudists) when we were there pre DC.

The strange thing was they weren't lying down sunbathing, or even sitting...they were standing up, many posing with their arms behind their head (as if tanning their armpits!). It just seemed very exhibitionistic and odd.

Some were standing on the dunes - not in, but on them which made it even more obvious as it was if they were on a display pedestal. All that was missing was a flashing neon arrow sign saying "naked bits this way" Grin

HopefullyAnonymous · 30/04/2019 18:07

I worry about the etiquette! I’ve been trying to persuade DH to visit such a beach on our next holiday but I’m worried we’d do something wrong and stand out like a sore thumb. I worry about everything though

Dommina · 30/04/2019 18:18

I go to nudist places frequently. It's your 'old people' comment that makes me so glad I do.

I've never had so much confidence in my body, am now completely unfazed by any combination of wobbly bits, and talk to lovely people I never would have normally spoken to. It normalises bodies and feels totally relaxing. I'd certainly never sauna clothed again!

theOtherPamAyres · 30/04/2019 18:30

I got up very early to take a walk along the beach alone. I could see a jogger in the distance and as he got closer, my attention was drawn to the most enormous three piece suite flapping towards me.

I thought we were going to collide because I became hypnotised by the up-down-side-side-swing-swing motion of his long bit and saddlebag. He did a bit of a shuffle to get out of my path and it was at this point that I couldn't hold back on laughing. I had to cross my legs in case I wet myself. He looked rather cross and that made me laugh even more.

I looked over my shoulder and could see a scawny bum disappearing into the distance, winking at me.

I'm sure that he thought that he had the body of a well hung Adonis. But that wasn't what I saw. Grin

BarbadosBrenda · 30/04/2019 18:32

'I've been on a nudist beach before, nothing special really, it's way nicer than wearing a plastic swimming costume of bikini'

Plastic? They are usually tiny garments in soft fabric. Nudists are purely exhibitionists imo.

LazyFace · 30/04/2019 18:34

100 percent nylon or lycra or whatever.
