To ask how you enjoy running?

I have tried running several times in the past, but every run just feels like an effort and so I give up. I’ve done couch 2 5k, completed it, ran a charity 5k then stopped as I simply didn’t enjoy it.

I’m feeling inspired after watching the marathon yesterday and would love to give it another try. I’m going to do couch 3 5k again, but all you runners out there, how can I enjoy running??

I've just refreshed my running playlist with some excellent old school club mash up tracks, here's a few of my adds.
I can't wait to get out again tomorrow morning, increasing distance to 10k, I've been maintaining 5 milers as a threshold but want to up to 6 miles as I'll be incorporating swims and F45 so the distance needs to up.

I 'love' running. That is to say I love being fitter, feeling strong, setting goals, being in beautiful places, my running buddies, the feeling after a few km that I could do a few more even though I though I couldn't at km 1.

I don't actually like running though!

Music at 170-175 bpm works for me. I write sins not tragedies, rude boy, living la vida loca, etc.

I adore running; mostly alone on trails and for a very long way. It is my thinking time and the only time when my stresses seem to melt away. The runs that I dislike are very few and far between - but when I am not feeling it I REALLY don't feel it. I also very much enjoy competing so wanting good results keeps me driven too.

If you genuinely don't enjoy running I'd try loads of different forms of exercise and sport until you find something that you really do like; you're far more likely to stick to it.

I've started doing parkrun. I'm shit, and really slow, but I am hugely competitive. So I can't wait to beat my time next week. I am loving running atm as its helping me beat my time.

I think you need to find the key to your running personality

I’m a fairly new runner, I always find it hard and don’t want to do it and it always sucks for the first 10 minutes. Then I start to feel good and enjoy the rest and always feel loads better for having done it. I find having good energetic music queued throughout my run keeps me pushing!

It isn’t for everyone, so maybe there’s a different sport or activity to suit you better

I love being out in the countryside on my own, with silence other than birdsong etc. I love covering the miles and exploring new paths and trails. I love seeing wildlife. And after the first couple of slow, painful, miles, I love speeding up and feeling like I can DO this, even though I'm short and old.

HillRunner · 04/05/2019 19:11

Slow down, up the distance and get out on some trails. It was a complete game changer to me to discover trail running.

Totally agree with this. I get bored an miserable when I run on roads, whereas the trails put a smile on my face every time.

Fazackerley · 04/05/2019 19:14

You see, I live in the countryside and only run on trails and I find it quite boring. I don't need to quiet myself, I don't care about the birds Grin it's the competition that motivates.

I am new to running and have started to go twice a week when my two year old is at nursery. Its clear I am unfit so hopefully this will help. I hated fitness classes. Being bossed around and copying the person in front. Eternally getting it wrong. Also hated the gym. Really hated other peoples sweaty bodies and the whole thing...in a room pushing weights and running but going nowhere on a treadmill. Running outside is so cool. My rules. My music. My pace. Its free. I can fit it around 4 kids. I get my best ideas out in the fields running too. Hope you can get back into it op. Agree that music helps!

I hate running in company. I listen to podcasts and have to grin and bear the first 15 mins.
