Where people post recipes or where I could start a discussion about recipes?

No actually I wanted to say that dh has chronic constipation which has been so unpleasant for him that even dh who loves junk food decided he must eat better and I am searching for some recipes that make him better soon and would also like to talk to other people about what they cook because I feel a bit alone in this and not sure if I can do it.

A whole BOARD devoted to constipation? Shock

Surely a thread would do?

applesarerroundandshiny · 28/04/2019 22:28

Increase fruit and veg and fibre in his diet and drink lots of water 🙂

Dragongirl10 · 28/04/2019 22:29

Start by cutting out takeaways and white food, bread/cakes/pasta/white rice etc/
Replace with vegetables, lentils, fruit, lean meats. Oh and more vegetables! also nuts and prune juice.

Flyingfish2019 · 28/04/2019 22:33

@Rubbertreeplant One the one hand yes, one thread would be enough. On the other hand: I really would like to talk to people who have chronic constipation or have a loved one with chronic constipation... and guess you find them on a a constipation board.

OP posts:
Cornettoninja · 28/04/2019 22:35

You might find IBS websites helpful, chronic constipation is a variant of ibs symptoms.

Flyingfish2019 · 28/04/2019 22:35

What I am searching for is really whole recipes. We already decided to replace noodles with whole grain noodles, white bread with whole grain bread and so on... and dh thinks he does not tolerate diary well. Will try to do without.

I really would love to talk with someone who has been there.

Your best bet is probably a private FB group. If a constipation-dedicated space exists anywhere online, I think it'd be on Facebook.

Perhaps someone will recommend one?

In the meantime; "Lentils" is my suggestion. Smile

lisasimpsonssaxophone · 28/04/2019 22:39

Just be aware that if you suddenly increase fibre intake it can actually make constipation worse - I think of the fibre as a sponge that kind of absorbs all the moisture in your intestines! So make sure you make changes gradually and that he drinks plenty of water.

Psyllium husks are good for bulking out stools and making them softer too, but again you need lots of water with them.

AndWhatNext · 28/04/2019 22:39

I was reading (on here maybe) about Syrup of Figs to help get it moving.
But the lifestyle change would be to drink more water, eat more vegetables and fruit, less processed carbs.

I've just typed this but re-read you you say chronic constipation - is this a medial condition, or the state that things have got to at the moment?

PBJtimedance · 28/04/2019 22:41

Have you tried the IBS network? That has recipe ideas for all kinds of gastric disorders.

riverislands · 28/04/2019 22:42

I had this recently and found porridge daily or oats based muesli plus one pear and one apple provided the right mix of soluble and insoluble fibre to reverse the problem. Especially with lots of fluid. Lentil or beans are also good.

Parrs and apples are very high in fibre, as are raspberries and blackberries (more than other soft fruit) .

PrincessDanae · 28/04/2019 22:42

Try cutting out lactose for awhile. DS1 had chronic constipation and was on medication for years. Then I cut out lactose (just changed to lactose free milk) and it's been life changing. He hasn't needed any constipation medication at all. It's a lesser known side effect of lactose intolerance, most doctors think only diarrhoea is a symptom of lactose intolerance, but constipation can be too. Worth a try!

Flyingfish2019 · 28/04/2019 22:44

By chronic constipation I mean he has been having that for longer than three month (actually much longer) and there is no real medical reason. (Apart from him having combat ptsd... and it‘s odd... constipation is not a symptom of combat ptsd but from what other military spouses have told me most of their guys have it.

He tried oat porridge and it made it worse.

Ok l am not a great chef but;

Roast chicken/lamb, with steamed broccoli, green beans, roasted parsnip, minted peas and cauliflower and gravy.

Homemade bolognese with 5% lamb or beef mince, chopped celery, green pepper, lots of herbs, spoonful of garlic and tin of tomatoes. spiralised carrot instead of spaghetti or wholemeal spaghetti.

Grilled steak with tomato, flat mushrooms, courgette (all grilled) peas, steamed green beans and snap peas.

Homemade turkey burgers, minced turkey, finely chopped red onion, black pepper and herbs, grilled, and served with steamed cabbage and peas.

These are a few of our quick meals.

Flyingfish2019 · 28/04/2019 22:48

@PrincessDanae: I have been told so yesterday when I mentioned dh thinks the milk makes him worse. We thought it was milk protein and wanted to switch to almond milk but a lady told us it might be milk sugar. It really sounds like what he has a bit because he is also often feeling bloated, his stomach hurts and so on.

How do you know that people replying here don't suffer with chronic constipation? People who do will reply from experience but aren't necessarily going to be up front with descriptions of their symptoms.

The advice to increase fibre intake and drink more water is sound. No need for special recipes, it's just good cooking, whether curries, stews, salads or whatever. Even a sunday roast, just with more veg than a token spoonful and maybe roasties with the skins left on. If your DH isn't being prescribed a macrogol softener, he should ask for it and glycerine suppositories are strongly recommended to help things from the other end.

Flyingfish2019 · 28/04/2019 22:51

@Dragongirl: Thanks a lot

OP posts:
PickAChew · 28/04/2019 22:53

And yes, if lactose intolerance is suspected, that's a fairly easy switch to lactofree products plus some careful ingredient label reading while he works it out, so to speak.

Dragongirl10 · 28/04/2019 22:53

Good point Pickachew,

To clarify, l have a sluggish bowel and since DS2 l am prone to constipation.........hence my choice of food, also l find Pilates excellent for keeping things moving....

Flyingfish2019 · 28/04/2019 22:56

@PickAChew It is what we decided to do. Today we had almond milk, because I hadn’t bought the lactose free milk yet. Tomorrow we will start with lactose free milk.
