Where people post recipes or where I could start a discussion about recipes?

Macrogols and suppositories would cut down on the straining. An hour is a very long time.

PickAChew · 29/04/2019 00:14

The Michael Mosley book is Clever guts. cleverguts.com/

starbrightnight · 29/04/2019 00:15

Glycerin suppositories are essential to get things going while waiting for dietary changes to take effect.

What shit (sorry) is this now?

Posting for help but not wanting replies because we're not niche enough?

Shit or get offa the pot

starbrightnight · 29/04/2019 00:17

Yes indeed it is, thank you for the link. My copy is on my bedside table and DH is in there asleep.

Flyingfish2019 · 29/04/2019 00:18

@Pickachew: So very long he needs to see a doctor ASAP? This doesn’t happen often. He never is quick but typically it takes him circa 15 minutes.

He had eaten lots of chocolates, Easter candy and so on.

He was really unhappy about the experience... thought about it for a while and now is sure he wants to change his diet.

For years I was told my chronic constipation was nothing to worry about. They stopped saying that when I ended up in emergency surgery for an internal rectal prolapse.

Which reminds me, Senokot can be used when required though is not recommended for regular use. Good old Andrews Liver Salts is first port of call before Senokot, and was prescribed by my consultant.

starbrightnight · 29/04/2019 00:25

He should use a Glycerin suppository rather than straining for ages.

PickAChew · 29/04/2019 00:26

The problem with senokot is that when there's a plug, the outflux it creates can't escape without severe cramps. It might be natural but it's not gentle.

starbrightnight · 29/04/2019 00:28

And as an earlier poster said, crouch down with knees raised to evacuate. That's the natural way our body works best.

Flyingfish2019 · 29/04/2019 00:29

He already has such a step to bring his body in the right position.

OMFG @shitatscarbble (I can see why), yes really.

I have chronic severe constipation and the stomach issues I have run down one side of my family and have been passed to one of my DC.

Biggest problem for me is that it's so severe, I get the not going to days and days then splitting my arse open trying to poop, eventually over several sessions getting most of it gone, then I end up with the shits so bad it's the yellow water kind with the odd pea sized lump.

No, I'm not a poo troll. But it feels like I have one inside me.

I don't use recipes, I just make stuff. With severe constipation like this, I have to lessen my carb intake, increase the fruit and veg and water, avoid chocolate and milk and yoghurt and non vegan/lactofree cheese.

Or make sure that bread and pasta are a very small portion per day.

I'm sorry your partner has this. I'd be grateful for a board for it but if it was on mumsnet it'd get no traffic anyway Grin good luck!

TheInebriati · 29/04/2019 00:33

Flyingfish2019 A change in bowel habits such as you describe should be seen by a doctor asap. Get him in to the GP any way you can.

@Theinbriati: I think I will. I think it is safer. Just to be on the safe side.

Download the Monash University FODMAP App. You can see exactly which dairy products have lactose in them, and whether you can have small amounts or not

It could also be that your DH is having problems with other short chain carbohydrates (FODMAPS) which some guts cannot absorb properly. The only way to see if other FODMAPs are a problem is to do an elimination diet. The app helps you check which foods to eliminate, and how to reintroduce them gradually to see what is causing problems.

How about don't eat bread or noodles at all? It is possible to do without. And lots of water, he needs to drink lots of water!

Sunnysidegold · 29/04/2019 06:09

My child has chronic constipation and has been under paediatric care for a couple of years now.

Straining fro so long is not good. If he is so bunged up he will need to clear the backlog so to speak, and then try to start afresh. It can take time.

My son is only 6 so obviously things are different. There is a website called "the poo nurses" which explains what constipation is and how the different things prescribed try to combat it.

As digested, something like a macrogol will help add water to the backlog stool to make it softer to pass. This is the old poo that has been stuck for a while. My son has a "clear out" every so often and then has a maintenance dose of one to two sachets of movicol paediatric every day.

Once the old poo is shifted the new healthy eating will help prevent another backlog happening. My friend has had great success with prebiotics too.

The best thing to do would be to see your gp though. Could you convince him?
