AIBU to ask if you know a constipation board

Flyingfish2019 · 28/04/2019 22:22

Where people post recipes or where I could start a discussion about recipes?

Tablespoon of flaxseed in your yoghurt or porridge. Lots of fibre and nutrients. They key though really is loads of water ....

LarkDescending · 28/04/2019 23:01

Macrogol (mentioned upthread) is a good suggestion and doesn’t need to be prescribed- it can be purchased OTC - either generically or under brand names Movicol or Dulcosoft.

Flyingfish2019 · 28/04/2019 23:03

He already drinks lot of water and also exercises a lot. Doesn’t help.

BTW does anyone know a lactose intolerance board?

OP posts:
TheClitterati · 28/04/2019 23:05

Taking kefir (made at home, not purchased) cured my IBS I think a glass a day would sort out even severe constipation.

TheClitterati · 28/04/2019 23:07

Kefir is made from milk but most of the lactose is converted in the fermentation - so it is ok for most lactose intolerant people

Melroses · 28/04/2019 23:09

Oats, beans and lentils, fruit and veg are supposed to work (not for me but I eat them anyway as they help a bit)

I would try a fibrey fruity breakfast with coffee - chew well as this encourages the muscle waves through the intestines.

Eat proper meals at mealtimes and don't graze inbetween - this gives more bulk and encourages the peristalsis too.

Plenty of water

No crisps or other salty, dry food

My personal favourite is to go out and have fish and chips - I think there is a lot more fibre in traditional chips than you think and the sheer bulk seems to help. We have some good chippies at the seaside here Grin.

Movicol. Use before things get bad, and in anticipation.

Flyingfish2019 · 28/04/2019 23:11

I think we‘ll first try without diary products for a while...

Actually there is another reason while I wanted a constipation board. There is a question I wanted to ask only people who have constipation or have a loved one who suffers from constipation.
Could I ask it here, would it be okay if the others do not look at the question?

Flyingfish2019 · 28/04/2019 23:12

Thanks @Melroses.

Thanks a lot.

This is a public board, as are most, so don't ask here if you feel the question you want to ask is highly sensitive or you don't want it to end up in the Daily mail.

It's not that mumsnetters on the whole are squeamish, more that there are too many people on the Internet whose intentions are far from pure, namely, we have a poo troll about. Someone getting their kicks from others' situations may noy bother you, but just be aware that anything you post here is no more private that anything you say on the number 57 bus (though maybe a little more anonymous, as Blabbermouth Belinda from 3 doors down probably isn't sitting 2 seats behind you)

What? You're being a bit weird OP.

Thesunrising · 28/04/2019 23:32

Chronic constipation is a medical conditon which needs to be treated with medication. Macrogol disimpaction, maintenance dose, combined with 8 glasses of water a day, and regular sits on toilet 20 minutes after eating with knees elevated above hips. A stretched bowel caused by chronic constipation takes months or even years to recover - once any blockages of old poo are cleared, strict maintenance regime is required to keep everything moving and to allow bowel to shrink and regain muscle tone.

Flyingfish2019 · 28/04/2019 23:36

@Pickachew Basically that’s one of the reason why I was searching for a constipation board so that I could ask the question there. It is just if you would made him see the doctor about something... because I am worried but he is a guy who hates to see a doctor all of the time... so it would be really good if there was a board where I could I ask, but I guess I should not as here in this case.

Klopptimist · 28/04/2019 23:37

Aw Flying, I don't think you're weird. I get that constipation can be embarrassing but whatever your question is, I can guarantee that it will not be the worst question ever asked here. I have seen people post pictures of their poo on AIBU before now. I have read posts about manual evacuation and posts from those who haven't 'been' for over a week. Whatever your question is, I am willing to put £20 on the fact that you won't be alone in it.

PickAChew · 28/04/2019 23:45

A good constipation bard would tell him to get himself to the doctor, or at least speak to a pharmacist.

PickAChew · 28/04/2019 23:46

Actually, a constipation bard would sing a little ditty about the displeasure caused by the poo not being forthcoming :o

LarkDescending · 28/04/2019 23:47

Unless there are “red flag” symptoms he doesn’t necessarily need to see a doctor at this stage - a pharmacist can advise, and will have a private consultation room so that it doesn’t need to be discussed in front other customers and staff.

Flyingfish2019 · 28/04/2019 23:49

@Pickachew That would be better if he reached out himself but he is not that type of person. I am always just worrying about him because he doesn’t take good care of himself. Maybe I should ask a pharmacist.

I think you should ask the question, there seem to be some sensible people here Grin

I have chronic constipation due to medication. I have it under reasonable control now thank goodness! Is he willing to try meds? If he hasn't been for ages, a glycerin suppository should get things moving! Followed by a daily dose of movicol. If I've managed to get things moving and they are stable, sometimes I can skip the movicol and take 200mg of magnetism citrate at bedtime instead

Diet wise I try to get my 5 a day fruit and veg but often don't have more. I always have berries for breakfast, with Greek yoghurt and home made granola (lots of oats, nuts and seeds). Maybe home made veg soup for lunch, and dinner with at least 2 veg (more if I'm making something saucy like pasta. I try to drink water but I'm not very good at it. I don't eat gluten for other reasons, I'm not sure if that helps... in practice it means much less bread. I eat gf bread occasionally, make delicious gf biscuits and eat a fair amount of oatcakes/oat biscuits.

Not exactly recipes but I hope it helps.

Redglitter · 28/04/2019 23:55

I honestly cant see why a constipation board would be so much better than posting in general.

Doesn't bear thinking about how many poo trolls a constipation board would attract

sairbair · 29/04/2019 00:07

I would be happy to chat about chronic constipation however I'm not sure how to message you directly. I'm off to bed now but if you do want to natter please shout. Sweet dreams xx

Flyingfish2019 · 29/04/2019 00:08

I am not sure if it is a red flag symptom... I hope not but somebody (who is not a doctor) told me she would worry if she was me.
Well, I think I‘ll ask. The question is only for people with constipation please.

So dh doesn’t have bowel movement every day... which is actually normal when you are constipated... and well, he had not been for a while and really felt he needed to go. So he went to the lavatory, stayed in there for more than on hour... had to strain all the time, was not very happy with the result.
Next day he went to the lavatory for more than an hour again, needed to strain all the time again (and was happier with the result).

Typically he is much quicker... I am always a little worried he needs to strain so hard... is it a red flag he needed to strain so hard for so long? It actually was what made him decide to change his diet.

After all he had bowel movement, so he cannot be really blocked and next time will hopefully be better because of a change in diet.

I'm an expert on this so happy to share what I've learnt the hard way (sorry).

Prebiotics - take inulin every day. Add it to slow cooked stews and drinks. It's tasteless.
www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/318593.php

Add linseeds in cooking, ie stews, porridge etc.

Porridge oats made with water or live kefir fermented yoghurt, not milk. Add prunes.

Magnesium Citrate, 800mg per day.

Probiotics every day.

Live yoghurt every day.

Try sauerkraut.

Drink lots of water and eat plenty of fruit and veg.

Get lots of exercise, especially walking or running.

The biggest helper is Inulin. Also available in pre-measured sachets called ??? (I'll come back with the name) Add it to whatever you can or just drink it down in a glass of water.

Read Dr Michael Moseley's book, I think it's called the Good Gut Guide.
