Pub Quiz cheating

I was at a pub quiz last night with a team of friends, some of whom I know better than others. There was the usual spiel beforehand about not googling the answers, and I nodded through it all wondering why it was necessary: we were all adults who ought to know how to play fair...

Then the quiz started. 3 questions in, and there's one we don't know. I make a mental note to keep trying to figure it out and we carry on answering the questions. A few minutes later one of my team mates has the missing answer. I ask her how she knew and she smirked and said she'd googled it. I was really shocked: I had no idea people actually would do that for the sake of an extra point. I said we weren't going to write it down because it was cheating. She gave the very clear impression that I was being stuck up and a goody two shoes and all of a sudden I felt like I was back at school and not fitting in with the cool crowd.

It's left me with a really bad feeling about her in particular, but also whether I was being too uptight. Is it normal to cheat? It's never crossed my mind and I've never been on a team where this has come up, but on this occasion she seemed certain she was in the right and didn't apologise when I said it wasn't ok.

Help. I'm overthinking it today but I need to know whether I'm being a dick, or whether she is.

I think its the done thing these days!

What’s the point if doing them then?

We do about three different quizzes a month. We don’t cheat.

Ferrisbuellersdayoff · 28/04/2019 19:44

It's not the 'done thing' at all. If there's a prize, it's even worse, as you may cheat your way to first place.

It's cheeky, but you'll find pub quizzes are full of it. Last pub quiz I went to the table on our left kept asking the tables around them, and the table behind us had phones out and were 'texting friends'

PlainSpeakingStraightTalking · 28/04/2019 19:44

I participate in "serious" quiz leagues - phones have to be in clear sight, no nipping off to the loo, mid round fag break or anything like that..

It’s definitely cheating otherwise what’s point of doing the quiz if we all just googled the answers.
Although I will admit at the last quiz I went to if I saw someone on one of the other nearby tables say the answer and I could lip read what they said I wrote it down it’s a skill in itself

Good quizzes make you put your phones in the middle of the table or in a box.

Quite often in the break people "go to the toilet" with their phones.

I think it sucks the fun out of quizzing and ruins it for everyone involved.

I feel such pride when I suddenly remember a pointless bit of information that is only needed for a quiz or when we do well in comparison to others who I can tell cheated.

Years and years ago I did a weekly quiz, when we didn't know the answer we would write Mickey mouse hoping one time it will be right... we used to get about 15 out of 40 l, have a laugh and get pissed.

Quizzes are no longer fun unless you have strict rules in place and someone watching the teams

Fwiw I'm with you op

I went to one the other week and there was a table Shazamming the music round. Luckily the quizmaster saw and called them out on it but they weren't disqualified.

purpleme12 · 28/04/2019 19:53

It would really annoy me too

Lurleene · 28/04/2019 19:54

Google tells me Shazamming actually means doing it doggy style with a lady. What I meant to say was ' using the Shazam app to identify music'. Blush

Every day is a school day.

You need to get yourself to a smartphone pub quiz! Basically each team has a smartphone/tablet and it becomes a live buzzer. It’s fastest finger first, no time for googling!
