New hoover time. Are they actually any good?!

Worst household purchase I ever made (and that's quite an impressive accolade!) is my Dyson stick vacuum. I have mainly wood floors in a relatively small two-storey house and I have nowhere near enough runtime to do the house. I end up doing one room at a time, then putting the thing on charge. At the moment, I'm on maternity leave so it isn't much hassle to vacuum at various points during the day, but when I go back to work, I'm getting a corded so I can come in from work and do the whole house.

If that approach suits you, go for it. If you're the type who likes to go through the whole house, avoid like the plague.

JaneEyre07 · 28/04/2019 16:39

I spent nearly £300 on an AEG animal stick cleaner. Takes 5 hours to charge to give you around 10 minutes of cleaning if you use it on max. Use it on min and you may as well get the hairdryer out and just blow the dust around. It's fine if you don't have kids, pets, visitors and never bring any dirt or bits into the house. Ever.

I hate the effing thing, btw Grin and had to buy a Shark corded less than 3 months later. That thing I love.

maddening · 28/04/2019 17:01

Shark cordless, didn't expect it to replace our corded Dyson but it has, just as good and so much more convenient. Have 2 battries which easily do 5 bed house. Small waste compartment which is easy to empty. Good extra tools and easy to use for stairs, car etc etc.

SometimesIGetNervous · 28/04/2019 17:08

Obvious question maybe but do you regularly wash the filter?

Yep, makes no difference!

Monstermissy36 · 28/04/2019 18:40

I absolutely love my cordless dyson.... I do have a small house but it does it all in one charge, is simple to empty. It's so handy to grab multiple times a day if needed 🤷‍♀️ I can't relate to everyone's hatred of it at all.

LakieLady · 28/04/2019 18:49

Another GTech fan here.

It's so light, it's effortless and it picks up an amazing amount of crap. I don't sweep the hard floors any more either, it works brilliantly on those too. And when you slide the handle back in, it takes up hardly any room.

I use the handheld for the stairs and sofas, that works just as well as the upright. I might even hoover the bed with it!

wonderingsoul · 28/04/2019 18:51

I just brought a shark duo stick Hoover.

Its AMAZING.

I HAD A DYSON BEFORE AND THIS THING BRINGS UP 3 TIMES AS MUCH STUFF.

wonderingsoul · 28/04/2019 18:53

Though I wouldn't get a cordless one.

Sharks have a 10 meter cord so does my whole place.

ProfYaffle · 28/04/2019 18:55

I've just bought a Shark corded - love it, best hoover I've ever had. Easy to empty/clean filters etc, v light and easy to carry around.

Frouby · 28/04/2019 18:56

I have a big, old vax and have just bought a shark stick as a downstairs whizz around hoover.

Love the shark, it's as convenient as you would think, but also good enough for upstairs as well and it takes minutes to do the whole house. However yesterday I deep cleaned my bedroom, pulled out furniture etc and used my big vax, I don't think the shark would have coped with all the dust and fluff.

So I would recommend one, but have a back up workhorse as well. For the long, horrible jobs like under the bed. Unless ypu aren't a slattern like me and keep on top of stuff like that.

If my workhorse gets retired I would probably invest in a corded shark, they seem to have good reviews.

Shootingstar1115 · 28/04/2019 18:59

Do you mean a cordless or a corded stick vacuum?

I have just bought a cordless Dyson. For years I swore I would never buy a cordless as I didn’t believe the battery would last long. I have two messy kids and a white dog who constantly sheds and always hoovering. But to be honest I LOVE it. I don’t think a Cordless would be any good for people who don’t regularly vacuum as it wouldn’t last long enough for a lot of mess but if you vacuum once or twice a day like me then the battery will last long enough for you to finish because it’s kept on top of.

I can vacuum my whole house with the Dyson V7 without the battery running out.

I do also have a Shark corded (bought a few years ago) for particularly messy or longer jobs. 😊

OrdinaryGirl · 28/04/2019 19:03

I don't think all the Dyson cordless models are created equal. My sainted parentals gave us a Dyson Cyclone V10 Animal and it is absolutely jaw-droppingly, blisteringly effective and easy to use / empty / clean. Has been life changing.
I just had a quick look on the JL website and it has 1,600 5 star reviews so I'm guessing maybe it's other models that people generally don't like?

suziQ10 · 28/04/2019 19:04

Hate my cordless Dyson stick.
It it's rubbish when it comes to emptying. You have to use your hands. The bit that holds all the dirt and dust has also been known to fly open and all the bits are all over the floor again... somehow just as the battery goes. Would not recommend.

NotMyCircusMonkeys · 28/04/2019 19:05

I have a Shark cordless, I love it and can easily do the whole house (3 bed semi) on a single charge.

DizzyPhillips · 28/04/2019 20:46

Fab thank you everyone for your replies and advice.

I have decided to order a Shark upright on AO because I can get finance for it. What has put me off is that it tells me that the finance company may contact my employer to verify my income. Can anyone shed some light on what this involves? I have no issue with this per se but not sure I want my employer to know the ins and outs tbh

I have a Dyson V6 Pet. The pet head is great and sucks up a LOT of cat and dust from carpets and sofa. It's much better on carpets than laminate, but okay on laminate. Is fine in a two bed flat if you aren't wanting to do a full on skirting board etc scrub. Wouldn't do a large house.
Is also a bit awkward to empty but okay so long as you have the body properly in the bin when you empty. And empty v frequently.

DizzyPhillips · 28/04/2019 21:41

Aargh I’m so conflicted!

Got first Robot hoover this year and I wish I had got one 20 years ago! I hoover everyday now (well, the robot does) instead of every few days. Have bad back and big dyson always set it off. The stick dyson is used for the stairs every now and again.

DizzyPhillips · 28/04/2019 21:45

Which robot hoover do you have 🤔

CoolCatKat · 28/04/2019 21:49

The irobot Roomba. I should b on commission for them. I tell all and sundry how amazing it is. Im quite evangelical about it. I dont think people how good they are for disabled people too.

CoolCatKat · 28/04/2019 21:49

*realise

CoolCatKat · 28/04/2019 21:52

Best thing is not moving bed/tv/furniture....it just tootles underneath most of them.

Inapickle230 · 28/04/2019 21:55

The cordless shark is always on offer, either on very.com or amazon for £199, it’s definitely worth waiting as they come up often. The shark is amazing, you don’t need a corded in between.
