What to wear abroad this summer so it doesn't scream tourist

It's pretty much a given that you can spot a British tourist a mile off. I'm going abroad this summer and it'll be hot I want to be cool comfortable stylish yet blend in so I dont scream tourist. When I think off a British tourist its maxi dresses linen pants walking around town with swim wear and flip flops football tops basically the show benidorm. Americans always seem to be in Hawaiian shirts socks with sandals fanny packs and clothes with the American flag on couldn't be more obvious.
Basically what to wear without looking like a tourist.

Where are you going? Why does it matter if you look like a tourist?

AnyFucker · 28/04/2019 10:26

But you are a tourist

HoneyDragon · 28/04/2019 10:28

Gimp mask and pvc cat suit is your friend here. No way people will think you’re a tourist and no unsightly tan lines.

Chippychipsforme · 28/04/2019 10:30

Well it depends where you are going "abroad"
US - Stetson & cowboy boots
Germany - lederhosen
Australia - cork hat
France - beret and stripey top
Spain - flamenco outfit

Easy!

TheIncredibleBookEatingManchot · 28/04/2019 10:32

You will look like a tourist because you'll be on holiday wearing casual clothes to relax in.

Local people will not be on holiday so will be wearing their work clothes or clothes suitable for DIY or gardening or whatever.

Maybe if you don't want to look like a tourist wear a suit?

DisplayPurposesOnly · 28/04/2019 10:33

I wear the same clothes as I would wear at home, as appropriate for the weather and what I'm doing.

I spose I may look like a tourist at home too Grin

Freshprincess · 28/04/2019 10:37

When I went to Florida I could tell the Brit families as the kids were all wearing Next clothes, including my own.

When I worked in a tourist city, the normals were wearing work clothes, tourists wearing casual photos looking at stuff and take photos.

adaline · 28/04/2019 10:42

But you are a tourist, and you'll look like one because you're there on holiday, whereas the locals are just going about their daily lives.

I live in a tourist destination (UK) and you can always tell who the tourists are.

DailyMailcanfuckthefuckoff · 28/04/2019 10:43

Are you going somewhere in western Europe? I can always spot other British women as they seem to wear a lot more colour and/or bright patterned things (florals, palm-leaf prints, etc.) than the people who live in touristy places. Where I live now, people generally shun patterns and are rather judgey of everyone else's clothes - it was very nice travelling to a Latin-American country recently and seeing women wearing bright dresses and loud patterns.

stucknoue · 28/04/2019 10:49

It's just the casual clothes that are the giveaway plus some of us have almost translucent skin which doesn't help! Stop worrying and where what looks good on you

Oldraver · 28/04/2019 10:57

My Mum lived in Spain for years and you could always tell tourists as they favoured bikini tops under skimpy t-shirts and shorts.

Locals would just be dressed casually for the weather, but bras would be worn

youarenotkiddingme · 28/04/2019 11:04

I lived in the canaries for a number of years.

Really hot days you probably couldn't tell the difference between locals, expats and tourist.

Anything below 15° it screamed obvious. Locals and expats in trousers/ jumpers and coats.
Tourists still in bikinis/shirts/vest tops - possibly a cardigan - and very obviously trying to pretend it wasn't cold Grin

NunoGoncalves · 28/04/2019 11:13

The fact that you didn't it was important to tell us your destination makes me think you're destined to fail to be honest.

Sagradafamiliar · 28/04/2019 13:39

It's good advice to dress to fit in in certain places. E.g. pickpockets in Barcelona zone in on tourists as they stand out like a sore thumb.
Where I've lived in hot places, people wear long sleeves tops/shirts/blouses but in natural material and dress well generally.

Shimy · 28/04/2019 13:43

The fact your skin will be pasty white is all the locals will need to know.

Shimy · 28/04/2019 13:44

You’re a tourist, just own it.

Ithinkmycatisevil · 28/04/2019 13:45

Sombrero and a donkey for under your arm?

BiscuitDrama · 28/04/2019 13:47

Your walking speed will entirely give you away, don’t worry about what you’re wearing.

Aragog · 28/04/2019 13:47

My pale white skin would always give me away regardless, along with the constant 'glow' of being sticky and hot from the heat.
It wouldn't matter what I was wearing - just the fact that I am clearly not used to the heat, and my skin doesn't tan (rages of the fact I travel on holiday abroad to warm places 4+ times a year) means I will never look like I live there permanently.

Oh and the fact that I am in casual wear on a working week day.

TheCanterburyWhales · 28/04/2019 13:49

It's the fact that tourists (Brits and Americans mainly, but also Germans) favour:
Revealing as much skin as possible
Beige
Cropped trousers
Birkenstocks or those John Merrell style sandals
Clutching a backpack nervously with both hands even though the ppt is in the bumbag
Creased linen

The patterns also tend to be very patterny.

But that's just my take from the south of Italy. Dp always says "ooh look, some of your countrymen" and it's always those nationalities.

archivebuildingsite · 28/04/2019 13:52
Grin

Cupcakeicecream perhaps wear what you wear to work, then everyone will assume that you're working, not on holiday Grin

Or say where you're going.

raviolidreaming · 28/04/2019 14:07

Maybe if you don't want to look like a tourist wear a suit?

Grin
Flaxmeadow · 28/04/2019 14:13

I just wear what I always wear, only notch it up a bit smarter. As if I was going out for lunch, going to an occasion or shopping in a large town or city.

Favourite jeans, smart loafers or sandals, nice jacket, scarfs. Nice dress or skirt for the evening

Just pack all your favourite items. The things you feel good in, but weather appropriate

catindahat · 28/04/2019 14:17

Executive office look?

raviolidreaming · 28/04/2019 15:09

Pyjamas, for that 'just popping out for milk' look?
