It's pretty much a given that you can spot a British tourist a mile off. I'm going abroad this summer and it'll be hot I want to be cool comfortable stylish yet blend in so I dont scream tourist. When I think off a British tourist its maxi dresses linen pants walking around town with swim wear and flip flops football tops basically the show benidorm. Americans always seem to be in Hawaiian shirts socks with sandals fanny packs and clothes with the American flag on couldn't be more obvious.
Basically what to wear without looking like a tourist.

Why do you care what people think? You're on holiday. Stop worrying about other peoples opinions of you. Go on holiday and enjoy yourself. If you want to wear white socks and sandals, do it!!

Bookmarking because I want to know this too. Hoping to go to France this year, and if I do, I want to actually improve/practise my spoken French

Go to a food market, go early or late so it's not too busy, look interested in the produce and I guarantee the stallholder will be happy to chat away to you in French, as will fellow customers. You might even get offered some free samples. Smile

In my part of Europe we don't get many tourists, but when we do, they tend to be Russian, so there are a few gold trackies with heels.
Brits tend to wear pink, and be pinkish.

Gold trackies and heels sounds fabulous!

Even when I lived in the canaries and had done for years I could never get down with wearing tight skinny jeans and tee tobthe beach over a bikini and shoe hornjng myself back into them afterwards!

But my friends also tended to wear skirt/shorts and tops like me. It was only the 'true' Canarians (born and bred there) who ever really did this.
