What to wear abroad this summer so it doesn't scream tourist

It's pretty much a given that you can spot a British tourist a mile off. I'm going abroad this summer and it'll be hot I want to be cool comfortable stylish yet blend in so I dont scream tourist. When I think off a British tourist its maxi dresses linen pants walking around town with swim wear and flip flops football tops basically the show benidorm. Americans always seem to be in Hawaiian shirts socks with sandals fanny packs and clothes with the American flag on couldn't be more obvious.
Basically what to wear without looking like a tourist.

I find that speaking the language fluently, whilst dressed like a tourist really confuses people.

Oriunda · 28/04/2019 16:57

@Midsomer - this Easter was particularly warm. As my son skipped along sans jacket, the child in front of him was wearing a puffer and a hat.

I still remember my first Easter down there - it was summer weather so I was in (Gucci) platform sandals with no tights and a summery red skirt. Oh the looks I got! I don’t look Italian and my accent betrays me so I don’t bother trying to blend in. My low personal maintenance and unusual taste in clothes gets blamed on being English so I have more leeway.

brizzlemint · 28/04/2019 16:57

Look miserable, don't take a camera and stay in and watch television all day.

OlafLovesAnna · 28/04/2019 17:02

I like in southern Europe and went to my local DIY store in a bikini under a Hush dress. I don't even pass for local speaking the language, having a tan and buying plants on a Sunday!

Igneococcus · 28/04/2019 17:05

"- 50% less clothing than anyone else"

Should you plan to go on holiday in Scotland however this is usually the other way round.

brumblebee · 28/04/2019 17:05

Suntan lotion. Nothing gives away a tourist more than sunburn.

SimplyPut · 28/04/2019 17:05

Depending on the location I just wear a variation of my normal summer look at home. For most European holidays average outfits would be;
Day
Linen shift dress and leather sandals.
Jersey midi dress and leather sandals.
White 7/8 trousers and top or blouse with espadrilles.
Navy 7/8 trousers and linen shell top with leather sandals.

Evening understated jewellery, silk tops/blouses and simple make up.

Good basket bag/tan leather bag and nice clutch for evening.

I stick to navy, black, nudes, cream, white and a few touches of pale blue and brighter pink.

Hair always neat and avoid sunburn!

Moisturise.

Basically if you’re going to mainland Europe wear clothes that fit well, no jean legs dragging along the floor, don’t wear patterns or cheap shoes.

ratspeaker · 28/04/2019 17:17

The tourists in my city wear a cloak of invulnerability as they stand in the road to take pictures.

raviolidreaming · 28/04/2019 17:49

Buy a postie's uniform fot the country you are visiting and carry a huge letter filled sack with you at all times. Likewise get your children to lug school books and games kit with them at all times, you'll have a miserable holiday but you'll blend right in

Actual lol! Grin

Branleuse · 28/04/2019 18:02

Just wear your normal summer clothes. Youre never going to see most of those people again

DefinatelyAWeeGobshite · 28/04/2019 18:03

Well it depends where you are going "abroad"
US - Stetson & cowboy boots
Germany - lederhosen
Australia - cork hat
France - beret and stripey top
Spain - flamenco outfit

😂😂😂

I've just googled and came up with a guide to what to wear in Barcelona. It also seems to mention muted colours. www.barcelona-tourist-guide.com/en/shopping/barcelona-clothes.html

pantsville · 28/04/2019 20:24

Lilo under your arm. T shirt and hat with the name of the resort on it. Flip flops. An anklet. Bikini and sarong. Sunburn. Camera on a strap round your neck

Shockers · 28/04/2019 20:33

I always assume that nobody else will give a monkeys what I’m wearing. It really takes the stress out of deciding what to wear.

Cantbelieveit101 · 29/04/2019 02:03

If you come to Australia please do not wear a cork hat..... they are not a thing!

I live in a tourist area and we can pick tourists by the general paleness of arms and legs and that they wear shorts and t shirts in our winter!!!

Rezie · 29/04/2019 08:57

With my Scandinavian long blonde hair and pale skin I look like a tourist even in places where I have lived.

poppym12 · 29/04/2019 09:05

Wear what you feel comfortable in? Maybe you judge others too much on what they're wearing if you feel like this.

Teddybear45 · 29/04/2019 09:05

It depends where you go. In Italy and parts of Spain locals do tend to dress less casually even when they go on holiday. So if you like to roam around in dark jeans / fitted skirts/ smart palazzo’s well fitted tops / styled hair you won’t look out of place.

Also bear in mind where you go. In the same way as you wouldn’t wear a bikini top and a sarong in the middle of Central London and expect to fit right in, don’t do it in Paris / Barcelona / Madrid / Rome (though in Barcelona you can leave it to the beach at least).

Kinsters · 29/04/2019 09:11

Why does it matter though? Nothing wrong with being a tourist and it will probably be quite obvious to any locals you interact with.

I live in a really hot and humid country and blend in somewhat cause I wear jeans most of the time. It wouldn't be comfortable to do that if you were a tourist seeing the sights and going to the beach though.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 29/04/2019 09:11

Aw but I like a nice print and a holiday is the only chance I get.

Seriously though, you can’t generalise can you? Every city has its own look. I was in Liverpool last week and I saw loads of young girls in DMs, black skinny jeans, fitted black T shirt and leather jacket. Very pared down simple look. Was in Manchester the week before and no one was doing that look.

Years ago DH (who is normally a scruffy biker type) and I went to France and he took a really tasteful nice linen suit. Every restaurant we went in they seemed to assume we were French, the difference in our treatment was remarkable.

MooBaaLaLaLa · 29/04/2019 09:12

Just pack some clean knickers and buy the rest of your clothes in the local shops/markets when you get to wherever you're going.
Check out what others are wearing while you walk very quickly to the shops and then do your best to assimilate.

Still18atheart · 29/04/2019 09:17

Are you asking op how to pull of that effortlessly chic Mediterranean look that the locals always manage to pull off

Shodan · 29/04/2019 09:18

You could assess your own look and then tailor your holidays to suit it.

If you usually wear tasteful, muted clothes, only holiday in places that do similar.

I have zero fashion sense, ergo I am holidaying in Disney World.

toomuchtooold · 29/04/2019 09:19

Dress like me. I get spoken to in the language of the country when I'm in Switzerland, Germany and France (I live near the border to all three). I wear baggy jeans, New Balance trainers, and a selection of rather old, dark blue tops from Cos. It's like my uniform. I think maybe it works not because I look especially local but because my clothes look too boring to take on holiday Smile
