My DH goes running with this father weekly. They run near our house so FIL comes here first.
They run 10 or 15k usually and tend to come back very very sweaty! As soon as they get back DH will hop in the shower and put his running clothes straight in the wash.
FIL will sit on the sofa in his sweaty running gear and have a cup of tea, chat with me etc..

I've noticed that our sofa smells quite bad. I'm not saying it's all to do with this but surely it can't help.
I'm just about to get the sofa cushions dry cleaned. It's quite expensive. AIBU to ask FIL not to sit on sofa in sweaty running gear anymore, since it'll soon be nice and clean?

Eek. Sofa cover/throw on that side?

When he next comes after a run, put a double folded throw over where he sits. Tell him you’ve just had the sofa cleaned so as he’s just come back from a run, could he please sit there. When he comes over not having been in a run, don’t have throw on sofa. Hopefully he will get the hint.

Otherwise, perhaps DH should encourage FIL to bring change of clothes and shower at yours before sitting down for a visit. Only day that as its otherwise a pleasant and also healthy routine they have together.

YANBU but it’s an awkward conversation

Get your DH to tell him if not

I suppose they can’t both be in the shower at the same time unless you have more than one so he is waiting for DH to shower

Reminds me a family friend came over and brought her cousin over. She said he was as with her as he’d been doing some kind of work like gardening or something, and was that ok, I said yes fine.

He came over and really smelled strongly of sweat as if he’d not used deodorant or anything (fine each to his own) but not only did he sit down on the sofa (which is leather so could be wiped clean) he leaned back against the cushions and the two he was near really smelled of sweat. I was really upset and annoyed by it and had to clean them. I just thought where is his self awareness that he leaned back and pressed his smelly armpits against my cushions?!

I also had a friend who came once “I’m in my gym clothes as I’ve come straight from the gym” 🙄

As a runner, I have sometimes stopped off at a friend's en route but I'll ask for a towel to sit on, or I'll stand until I leave. In my own house, we have leather sofas so not an issue.
