To ask about the dreaded loo brush?

This is not supposed to be goady - promise! I know the loo brush is a contentious issue here on MN, but DH and I are having a discussion about what the hell you are supposed to do without one! They are unsightly, yes, and ideally we wouldn’t have one but I cannot understand how you clean the loo under the water otherwise - genuinely want some answers please!

Of course you need one ! I just buy cheap ones and replace regularly . You can buy new bits for the end but that involved touching it 🤮. My son makes a mess every day when he goes so without one I would have a very grim toilet ! 🤷‍♀️

crispysausagerolls · 27/04/2019 08:15

Do you keep them in the bathroom? If so, “on display” or in a cupboard?

I do the same as gubbsy, one scrub and bin. I buy about a dozen from Ikea and keep them in the cupboard. Yes, I know it's not great environmen tally but needs must.

Mrsjayy · 27/04/2019 08:20

I don't understand how they are unsightly do you not have a bin in the bathroom hardly a work of art Grin how people clean toilets without one is beyond me mine sits at the back of the toilet.

niceberg · 27/04/2019 08:21

I don’t see the problem if you buy the ones that sit fully immersed in their own pot thing. Why is that unsightly?

And the whole panic about them becoming dirty strikes me as odd too, unless you were planning on using it for something other than cleaning the loo.

Go buy yourself a lovely loo brush!

Slicedpineapple · 27/04/2019 08:23

The people that I know that don't have one use (and reuse) a cloth for cleaning their loo. Yuck. Nothing like having your hand in with poo particles.

I keep a bit of disinfectant in with my loo brush and change it to keep the brush fresh.

BarbarAnna · 27/04/2019 08:23

You really don’t need to keep replacing them though. Do an extra flush with the brush held in the water. Periodically add bleach on the second flush. Millions of used loo brushes in landfill makes me shudder!

Mrsjayy · 27/04/2019 08:24

I just give mine a scoosh of bleach and a flush to clean it the squeemishness is silly imo

IAmNotPatientOrPregnant · 27/04/2019 08:25

Mine goes in the cupboard next to the toilet. We used to have it out as its a nice one that came part of a set. But I cant help but think I dont want a dirty brush just lurking in plain sight.

crispysausagerolls · 27/04/2019 08:28

We have a loo brush! It’s in a nice white wooden container or whatever but my SIL came round and was saying how much she hates them (which explains the skid marks she left in the loo last month 😂😂😂🙈🙈🙈) so i was really unsure - plus on a potty thread someone mentioned them; I don’t understand what the hell people do without one!

You're absolutely right - it's really not great for the environment. No wonder the planet's being choked by plastic while people are willing to do this sort of thing Angry

Humanity really is fucked ! We can totally destroy our planet and oceans with our throw away culture but at least we won't have an unsightly , once used loo brush in our bathroom AngryAngryAngry

SheeshKebab · 27/04/2019 08:33

I've got a loo brush in each of our bathrooms/downstairs loo. It's fully immersed in its own pot, can't see any of it. I bleach it regularly and hold it under while I flush. We've had them for 2 years though so should I replace it? Seems a waste when it's not smelly, visibly dirty etc.

MsVestibule · 27/04/2019 08:34

Ours is just left next to the loo - leaving it in a cupboard would mean transferring the germs into there! To clean it, I just put bleach down the loo, then place the brush in the loo for a few hours or overnight.

I can't believe a PP buys a dozen at a time, uses them once and then throws them away. No, not 'needs must'; it's completely unnecessary and incredibly wasteful.

Hiddenaspie1973 · 27/04/2019 08:37

I've got lovely silver ones. All self-contained. Can't see or smell them.
Just flush again so they're clean before putting it back into the holder.
When i worked at a well known resort, a housekeeper put one in the dishwasher.

Fridakahlofan · 27/04/2019 08:37

I’m appalled by the selfishness of those of you throwing away loo brushes. Get a grip and think of the harm you are doing.

LaurieMarlow · 27/04/2019 08:37

Mumsnet is fricking ridiculous about loo brushes. They’re practical and useful. I don’t want to stick my hand down the bowl thanks very much. They’re not supposed to be works of art. Anyone I know keeps it tucked away

They’re also very easily cleaned. Throwing them away after one use is terrible behaviour and I’m surprised at anyone admitting that when we’ve become so conscious of the impact of plastic on the planet.

youngestisapsycho · 27/04/2019 08:40

I have a silicone one, it’s great. Nothing stays on it nor does it hold water.

needsahouseboy · 27/04/2019 08:40

I think some people on MN need to watch some David Attenborough and see the devastating effect of plastic waste. How ridiculous no-one is going to be eating off your loo brush, most normal, sane people do not give a shiny shit about a loo brush being on show.

Processedpea · 27/04/2019 08:40

Has anyone tried the flat Joseph loo cleaners ? They look like the rubber bowl scraper things ?

scarecrowhead · 27/04/2019 08:43

Using a loo brush once and then chucking it is utterly ridiculous. I soak mine in bleach.

Dogparty · 27/04/2019 08:43

Use it once and throw it? How ridiculous is that! Get a grip.

hazeyjane · 27/04/2019 08:43

Yes, I know it's not great environmentally but needs must.

Throwing away a loo brush after one or two uses is not a need!

m4rdybum · 27/04/2019 08:44

We don't have a loo brush - I use those Toilet Duck flushable ones with the clippy handle.

GailTheFish · 27/04/2019 08:45

Seconding the silicone ones - much more expensive (have a Joseph Joseph one which I think was around £20) but cheaper than throwing away after one use!
