To ask about the dreaded loo brush?

This is not supposed to be goady - promise! I know the loo brush is a contentious issue here on MN, but DH and I are having a discussion about what the hell you are supposed to do without one! They are unsightly, yes, and ideally we wouldn’t have one but I cannot understand how you clean the loo under the water otherwise - genuinely want some answers please!

All this angst about having a lavatory brush, in the lavatory; it's not sitting in the middle of your living room. It's the same attitude that decrees you must have a lady with a big knitted skirt covering you loo role.

I keep mine beside/towards the back of the loo. When I put cleaner down the loo to soak, I put the loo brush in as well and it keeps it clean. The brush is certainly no filthier than the lavatory.

In the past, when this subject has come up, there will always be several posters being disgusted at the idea of having something 'covered in shit' sitting in a room in your house. If that is the state of anyone's loo brush then I suggest they look at making changes to their diet. My loo brush is never covered in anything.

I also can't imagine how anyone can clean a loo without a brush.

LaurieMarlow · 27/04/2019 11:01

but once poo has touched the bowl of the toilet it suddenly becomes much more disgusting?

Yes. 🤷‍♀️

Obviously I’d deal just fine if there was no alternative (like wiping my bum).

But guess what, the loo brush means I don’t have to, so hurrah.

@64sNewName so glad I saw your post as I had no idea you shouldn't use bleach in a macerator toilet, just had one fitted. What kind of cleaning product is safe to use? I have one of those nice silicone brushes everyone has mentioned but haven't used it yet Grin

Namenic · 27/04/2019 11:03

Silicone blade type is good. Hard to scrub some marks but easier to keep clean so lasts longer

64sNewName · 27/04/2019 11:12

We’re meant to stick to gentler products like Ecover Trisk, to avoid disintegrating the (rubber?) seal in the system or something - and we mostly do. For the first year or so I used only that type of thing. But it there are times when it really just calls for a bit of bleach! I don’t go wild with it and I flush it away after a short time - so far no probs🤞

sanityisamyth · 27/04/2019 11:14

I have one on display but I have never used it. ExH bought it and left it here. I put a bit of bleach down if there are any marks and that sorts it all out. Sparkly white loo!!

Theoldwoman · 27/04/2019 11:17

I only buy a new one when it's broken!!

It sits beside the toilet.

A couple of times a week I soak it in the cleaning bucket with some bleach added to hot water.

Triskaidekaphilia · 27/04/2019 11:23

@64sNewName thank you! I have some method bathroom cleaner which I think is quite gentle so maybe I'll try just spraying that down and scrubbing.

NorthEndGal · 27/04/2019 11:24

Funnily enough, this just came across my feed!

In what way are toilet brushes unsightly?? It's a bathroom. It's supposed to practical. Do people who worry about unsightly brushes and bins have Rembrandts hanging on their bathroom walls and their toilets decorated by Faberge?

Amimissingsomethinghere · 27/04/2019 11:31

We have an oxo good grips one. It's really small, discreet and it automatically opens and shuts without you having to touch anything.

Would recommend.

Throwing one away after each use is the most selfish thing I've heard.

LynseyLou1982 · 27/04/2019 11:35

We don't have one. We use the toilet duck flushable cleaning pads that come with a plastic clippy handle

Dungeondragon15 · 27/04/2019 11:37

We usually the toilet duck flushable pads too although as I'm a bit worried about whether they do actually dissolve I often use toilet paper in them after squirting bleach around the toilet bowl.

ShabbyAbby · 27/04/2019 11:57

I have only heard the toilet brush and bathroom bin issues on here. I have also never used a bathroom without either. I don't get the gross really.

Eliza9919 · 27/04/2019 11:58

I do the same as gubbsy, one scrub and bin. I buy about a dozen from Ikea and keep them in the cupboard. Yes, I know it's not great environmen tally but needs must.

You use a toilet brush once and then throw it away????

Jesus Christ.

I literally cannot believe that someone would do this! Shock

It absolutely beggars belief that people are this selfish
Utterly ridiculous that some people put the 'ick' factor of clearing up their own damn mess before the health of the planet. SORT IT OUT

LazyFace · 27/04/2019 12:06

I agree, one scrub and bin??? Two loos in a house, 2 never degrading pieces of plastic in the rubbish in the bin adding to the tons of plastic? I think it's utterly ridiculous!

TheStakeIsNotThePower · 27/04/2019 12:13

I just bought silicone ones. I got a Joseph flat one and a cheap amazon one and I must say the Joseph one is better.

Bbang · 27/04/2019 12:13

Mines a nice looking grey thing matches the rest of the bathroom, just keep it tucked behind the toilet probably use it once or twice a week (or as needed) to clean the toilet with bleach, it sits in zoflora or bleach in the plastic bit on the inside. You can take mine out so I often do to clean it, they are a bit grim but really you do need one.

I use the harpic tablet things that bubble up and clean the toilet, they obviously go under the water so that means I don’t have to use the brush as much.

ShannonRockallMalin · 27/04/2019 12:23

Never ever had a toilet brush. I keep a specific cloth for the job, get my rubber gloves on and get in there! Cloth gets soaked in bleach after then put in with towels etc on a hot wash. No different to washing cloth nappies.

Mintandthyme · 27/04/2019 12:27

We use the toilet duck flushable cleaning pads

They are not flushable despite what the packaging says. They are environmentally destructive.

Strugglingtodomybest · 27/04/2019 12:37

What I don't understand is, if you have no toilet brush and use a cloth, where do you keep the cloth and gloves for when other people need to clean the toilet? Or do you clean your DH and DC and friends skids too? Do they let you know? Or leave it to dry on?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 27/04/2019 12:38

I bought a couple of silicone brushes from Lakeland .

I have IBS so cleaning a regular bristle-ey toilet brush is a tad gross here .

It cleans under the running flush water and is half the price of the J&J one .
