To ask about the dreaded loo brush?

This is not supposed to be goady - promise! I know the loo brush is a contentious issue here on MN, but DH and I are having a discussion about what the hell you are supposed to do without one! They are unsightly, yes, and ideally we wouldn’t have one but I cannot understand how you clean the loo under the water otherwise - genuinely want some answers please!

For fucks sake. Those who find a toilet brush a bit too dirty so they scrub shit by hand? Seriously WTF? 😂

Get a nice bog brush. I had this one for years. You clean it every week. That's it. It's plastic ffs, it scrubs clean.

The person that scrubs once and bins Hmm

To ask about the dreaded loo brush?
gubbsywubbsy · 27/04/2019 12:45

I didn't say i bin after one clean, I just change it more often than if I bought a expensive one .

PinguDance · 27/04/2019 12:51

I use my loo brush with some non bleachy toilet cleaner to get limescale off - maybe once a fortnight. Can’t say I leave many skid marks but if I do - above water I would just wipe it off with a bit of loo roll, I mean, I would have just wiped shit off my arse so wiping it off porcelain doesn’t make much of a difference. Under water - I’d prob put my loo cleaner in and leva wit for a bit. I’d rather do that then wash my hands than subsequently have to clean the actual loo brush!

HarryElephante · 27/04/2019 13:02

I do the same as gubbsy, one scrub and bin. I buy about a dozen from Ikea and keep them in the cupboard. Yes, I know it's not great environmen tally but needs must

This actually beggars belief.

MoaningMinniee · 27/04/2019 13:17

All the the so called 'flushable' products - whether moist loo 'paper' or single use loo cleaners - are absolutely dreadful for the environment.

I have loo brushes in containers by each loo. Disinfectant and boiling hot water occasionally if the 'hold it under the running flush' method hasn't got them clean after use.

AND I have lidded bins in each loo, with a reused bag to line them. I don't expect my guests to have to carry used sanitary products around until they find a bin to put them in. Neither do I care to do so myself.

millymae · 27/04/2019 13:20

I’ve got a Joseph Joseph one - more like a spatula than a brush. It’s completely self contained and sits neatly by the side of the toilet.
Worth every penny IMHO - everyone should have one. It makes cleaning every part of the toilet bowl easy, and is itself easy to clean.
That said - I could be tempted by bugeyedbarber’s though!

mumofamenagerie · 27/04/2019 13:22

Rubber gloves and some loo roll on the rare occasions when skid marks don't vanish after a couple of flushes. I used to have a toilet brush but never replaced it when it became too old (bristles falling off).

bugeyedbarber · 27/04/2019 13:29

@millymae Grinit's Alessi. In fairness, I've been eyeing up the J&J one too.

You put loo paper down the toilet anyway don't you?!

DameSquashalot · 27/04/2019 14:06

Which loo brush have you got @youngestisapsycho please?

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 27/04/2019 14:10

I have one of those Joseph ones.
Now that I see they've been reduced, I'm going to buy 2 more for the other loos

crispysausagerolls · 27/04/2019 14:43

A few questions/comments

  1. those duck flushable wipes - wtf is the point? The plastic thing that holds the wipes goes into the pooey water anyway so then it’s not clean anyway!!!!

  2. are loo brushes fine to have out with toddlers or will be it ok? Especially if they sit in bleach in the case?

  3. someone mentioned a marble loo brush - I would like to see that!

  4. people throwing away loo brushes after every use are dicks.

I so envy those whose skid marks go away after a couple of flushes. I clean my loos two or three times a day! Must be our diet.Blush
I do use IKEA loo brushes but change them after a few months, not every use.😱

PassMeTheWine · 27/04/2019 15:17

Mine also has a strong flush. I just use bleach a couple of times a day. My loo always looks sparkling!

youngestisapsycho · 27/04/2019 15:51

@DameSquashalot
I have these.....

AliceRR · 27/04/2019 15:56

I don’t have a loo brush as DH doesn’t like them. I don’t either but we manage. I can clean above the water with toilet paper, wipes etc and find bleaching is enough for the rest

When I did have one I used it and then did an extra flush with loo brush in the toilet as PP said but they are disgusting. I have seen loo brushes with bits of toilet paper and shit in them and I’m happy to not have one

pigsDOfly · 27/04/2019 16:14

AliceRR I've seen homes with filthy kitchen sinks, doesn't mean I'm not going to have a kitchen sink because, clearly kitchen sinks are filthy things.

My loo brushes are cleaned regularly and never actually get bits of loo paper on them, nor would I leave shit on them.

TimeForDinnerDinnerDinner · 27/04/2019 16:30

I'm crying with laughter here 🤣🤣
I LOVE this MN topic!
It never gets old 😊

Happyspud · 27/04/2019 16:32

I just noticed a loo brush missing from its holder in one of the kids en-suite a yesterday. Can anyone tell me where the hell it is? I’m half expecting to find it somewhere weird like in my bed or something. I’ve a house full of toddlers.

EddyF · 27/04/2019 16:33

What are people's diets that have your toilet bowls all skidded up? I have never and will never own a toilet brush. I have the duck disposable one in case I'm looking after my niece or nephew and they mess up. Otherwise you can avoid stains by sitting on the toilet seat correctly. Drop some tissue in the bowl before you dump. Do your business sitting bang in the middle to not get stains on the side of the bowl.

Happyspud · 27/04/2019 16:37

Kids thigh bones are too short to sit in the middle. And anyway, a skid is a far healthier sign of a good diet than a hard, non-skiddy, lump poo.

AliceRR · 27/04/2019 17:15

My loo brushes are cleaned regularly and never actually get bits of loo paper on them, nor would I leave shit on them.

But other people might use it and then I’d be the one cleaning their shit and toilet paper off the loo brush

LaurieMarlow · 27/04/2019 17:45

I’d be the one cleaning their shot

Better to be cleaning their shit off the brush than the bowl.

Dungeondragon15 · 27/04/2019 18:49

those duck flushable wipes - wtf is the point? The plastic thing that holds the wipes goes into the pooey water anyway so then it’s not clean anyway!!!!

Stuff doesn't get stuck to the plastic thing as it would do to a brush so it is pretty easy to sterilize with bleach. The bit that gets poo on it can be flushed. I use toilet paper rather than "flushable wipes".
