To be sad we're not going abroad this year

Paraparanoid · 26/04/2019 21:31

We go abroad on holiday most years. This year we just can't afford the 4k plus it will cost our family of 4. Instead we've booked week in a cottage in the UK plus a few nights either side in Premier Inns, so will be away 10 nights at a cost of around 1k for accomodation and allowing 1k for spends. DD (13) unimpressed and I admit I feel a bit worried about crap weather etc although have done loads of research on things to do to keep us entertained. I'm now worried I could've done better with our 2k budget and perhaps could've gone abroad afterall. It would be school summer hols.

First world problem. A lot of families dont get any type of holiday at all. Nothing wrong with a UK holiday IMO

ChoudeBruxelles · 26/04/2019 21:44

You could easily do cheap flights and Airbnb for 4 including spending money for 4 abroad

hsegfiugseskufh · 26/04/2019 21:45

I get it. We are renovating our house this year and ds is still in full time nursery so we cant go abroad this year either.

We did go abroad last year, school hols 2 adults 2 kids for about 2k though!

formerbabe · 26/04/2019 21:45

Get a grip

ChoudeBruxelles · 26/04/2019 21:45

Sorry misread. You could still do cheap flights and Airbnb for £2k

hellodarkness · 26/04/2019 21:46

It feels a bit daft to be sad about only being able to spend £2k on a 10-day hotel/cottage holiday, no?

Part of me wants to remind you that we have some of the best history, beaches and shopping in the world, as millions of tourists from elsewhere will attest.

I'm afraid part of me does also want to tell you to get a grip.

lazymare · 26/04/2019 21:48

I would be v loathe to spend that on a UK holiday too, tbf.

Famalamaringwrong · 26/04/2019 21:49

Hmm ok hun enjoy your cheapo holiday. I'll be off for my sun holiday this year costing about 50 quid!

tanpestryfirescreen · 26/04/2019 21:51

£2000 is enough to go abroad.

OwnerOfThatChocolateBar · 26/04/2019 21:54

Sorry your getting blasted on here OP but I feel your pain. We won't be getting away this year either with having two big holidays last year. I'm sure you'll have a nice time when your there. I can't understand people that compare a UK holiday to one in a hot country a few hours flight away. No comparison!!

bamb00 · 26/04/2019 21:56

Was going to say you really don't need to spend 4k to go abroad! We recently did 8 nights in Valencia for 2 adults and 2 children, return flights under £200 (yes it was Ryan air but it's only a 2 hour flight) reallllly nice central hotel for 5 nights was just under £300, and air bnb by the beach for the last 3 nights was around £150. We did the aquarium and zoo, ate out everyday and altogether the holiday only cost around £1100 including activities, food and spending money. I know we avoided the summer holiday price hikes, but if you create your own package holiday by shopping around and booking hotels/flights direct etc even in the holidays you can save a fortune. We did mainland Spain last year in July and only paid £1800 for the 4 of us all inclusive at a fantastic resort. Having said that, there's nothing wrong with holidaying in the UK. I'm sure a year off from the airport hell will be refreshing and you'll probably have a more relaxing time overall. X

WeepingWillowWeepingWino · 26/04/2019 21:57

Well, perhaps if you hadn’t spoilt your DD with holidays abroad every year she wouldn’t be so unimpressed Hmm.

Honestly, listen to yourself. You have a huge sum of money for a holiday, far more than many of not most people. We’ve certainly never spent anything close to that on our (UK only) holidays.

LittleElle · 26/04/2019 21:57

I hear you. Yes it’s a first world problem but whatever, I understand. We are saving for a house deposit and we’ve had to make cut backs.

Surely you can side hustle £4K though? eBay I wanted items, matched betting, surveys etc?

Leeds2 · 26/04/2019 21:58

Where are you going? People might be able to suggest some fun things to do.
I would be unimpressed if my 13 year old was stropping about "only" having a UK holiday. Sounds like she needs to learn that there are some lovely places to holiday in the UK.

Branleuse · 26/04/2019 21:58

go in may or october instead. Miles cheaper

ValleyoftheHorses · 26/04/2019 22:00

I understand why you feel a bit down about this Op, I would too. Just because you’re more fortunate than some doesn’t stop you feeling sad that this year your holiday is different.
I hope you have a fab time!

flirtygirl · 26/04/2019 22:00

£2000 could have done a week abroad including spending money if you had shopped around. Stupid use of 4k previously and stupid use of 2k now.

AC12vsOCG · 26/04/2019 22:01

We could afford a £4k foreign holiday every year but choose to holiday in the UK for about £2/2.5k. We'll take them abroad when they're old enough to enjoy cultural trips but would never make whether a holiday was abroad or not be a factor on whether it was a "good" holiday Confused

Tinyteatime · 26/04/2019 22:01

You’re sad you have a 2k holiday to look forward to? Please get a grip.

LynetteScavo · 26/04/2019 22:03

I get it.

I feel sad every year when I can afford to go on holiday somewhere hot and relaxing.

Luckily my DC don't have an expectation to go abroad so they're perfectly happy. Just me, miserable behind my windbreaker.

But yes, you could have done a lot better for 2k.

ilovesooty · 26/04/2019 22:03

I feel your painHmm

Cuddlysnowleopard · 26/04/2019 22:04

If you drive to South of France, and stay in a Mobile home in a campsite, you can easily do a fortnight for less than £2k for four of you, two weeks.

I'm spending a week in France over may half term - four people, paid about £400 plus tunnel and petrol.

Two years ago, we stayed in a caravan for four nights in Provence (part of a longer holiday) and paid £200 for four nights, mid August.

Disappearedtothe80s · 26/04/2019 22:04

DD needs to get a grip (sounds a bit spoilt tbh), she shouldn't expect to go abroad every year, its a luxury. I know children that never go abroad and they seem to cope fine (mine having only gone three time - eldest is an adult).

And there's nothing wrong with visiting places in the UK.

LynetteScavo · 26/04/2019 22:04

*cant afford

profumoaffair · 26/04/2019 22:04

Could the posters who insist that op’s family of 4 could holiday abroad in the summer holidays for less than £2k (all expenses included) please link to some examples? Personally I’m sceptical. Even RyanAir flights to Spain etc are much more expensive in the summer
