To be sad we're not going abroad this year

We go abroad on holiday most years. This year we just can't afford the 4k plus it will cost our family of 4. Instead we've booked week in a cottage in the UK plus a few nights either side in Premier Inns, so will be away 10 nights at a cost of around 1k for accomodation and allowing 1k for spends. DD (13) unimpressed and I admit I feel a bit worried about crap weather etc although have done loads of research on things to do to keep us entertained. I'm now worried I could've done better with our 2k budget and perhaps could've gone abroad afterall. It would be school summer hols.

Is a minimum of 2 holidays a year really the norm for most people?

Most of my kids friends go away at least a couple of times a year, and spend another one or 2 half terms in this country somewhere, so it's not uncommon.
The kids have what, 6 breaks a year? (counting summer as 1 break). Sounds reasonable to go away at least for half of that, so 3 holidays a year roughly.

Count yourself lucky OP - we haven't been able to afford a holiday anywhere for 12 years.
Yes you ABU.

I think it's good to teach your kids once and a while that money doesn't appear out of thin air - holidays abroad are a treat not an expectation.

We are taking our kids out of school in June for ours which has cost 450 including travel for a week at euro camp in France going on euro tunnel. Was about 900 if in holidays. Taking kids disneyland for a day whilst we are there. Will cost about 400 for the day including food. So holiday all in for 4 will cost about 12-1500 after the week as self catering.

My kids are 9 and 6...we've NEVER been abroad. I get why you're disappointed but it's very much a 'diamond shoes are too tight' kind of thread and you're likely to get a pasting.

true, but seeing mum and dad go to work every day of the week, sometimes weekend will do just that.

EBay the kids that's how you get 4k!
