To be disgusted by this?!

So i work in a pub, i was serving a family of four (2 kids between 6 and 10ish) the kids were off playing in the play area when i bought over their meals. The kids both had chicken nuggets and chips (no veg) and as soon as i put the plates down the mother poured salt all over both of the kids meals without even asking them if they wanted it!!!

Why? Why why why would you ever do this?! Why do the childen need any extra salt to an already salty meal? She didn't even give them a choice just poured it all over the meals without even asking them. They dont even get a choice in whether they get an addrd salt diet or not. Id never even dream of putting any added salt in mine or my children food. Also any salt for that matter, I wont buy any high in salt foods.

Sorry this is a rant just upset me the children didnt even get a choice in whether they eat salt or not. Start as you mean to go on i suppose...

I add salt to chippy chips if I'm sharing with ds5 but that's about it.He has sweets several times a week tho so I must be flammable for that.Dgaf what others do though, each to their own.

Tucobenedicto · 26/04/2019 13:58

Why don't you get another job if something as trivial as a bit of salt disgusts you so much....

NoSauce · 26/04/2019 13:58

I don’t understand why you’d stay on MN when you hate it OP.

All this isn’t good for your blood pressure, probably worse than salt on your dinner 😛

hsegfiugseskufh · 26/04/2019 13:58

The maximum recommended amount of salt for babies and children is:
up to 12 months – less than 1g of salt a day (less than 0.4g sodium)
1 to 3 years – 2g of salt a day (0.8g sodium)
4 to 6 years – 3g of salt a day (1.2g sodium)
7 to 10 years – 5g of salt a day (2g sodium)
11 years and over – 6g of salt a day (2.4g sodium)

apparently a portion of birdseye chicken dippers has 0.69g of salt in it, so I don't think they needed more adding IMO.

If you're cooking from scratch and add some salt for flavour, that's fine, I wouldn't even suggest that it wasn't, but I cant get my head round putting salt on a chicken nugget I really cant.

SihtricsHorseWitnere · 26/04/2019 14:00

Oh, that's okay then. No, not really, J20, there are artificial sweeteners in that!

MyHairNeedsASnip · 26/04/2019 14:00

I add salt to DD's chips, and roast potatoes if she's got them. Sometimes salt and pepper on veg. She likes it like that and enjoys the food more. If she does it herself it ends up inedible. I didn't realise people might be watching and feeling superior over it.

Sabrinatheteenagebitchx · 26/04/2019 14:08

Sorry how do i feel superior? Because i dont cover my childs food in salt? Maybe i am then Wink

OP posts:
Raspberry88 · 26/04/2019 14:12

Maybe the salt pot was jammed so not a lot came out?

Yeah, this is the most likely thing. Pub salt pots are often clogged, I hate it when I have to shake for aaaages to get enough out!!

Beeziekn33ze · 26/04/2019 14:19

Sabrina - There are posters on Mumsnet who come on AIBU when they feel the need to have a go at someone.
Pedants’ Corner is the place for people who care deeply about spelling and punctuation. Sometimes they forget that not everyone has had their educational advantages. Sometimes they forget their manners. Sometimes they overlook that in communication clarity is more important than perfection. Innit?

Rosesaredead · 26/04/2019 15:23

It doesn't meant they eat shit all the time. Kids pubs meals are bland and tasteless, especially chicken nuggets and chips. Yuck. For all you know they normally eat healthy and flavoursome homecooked meals and so the mum added some salt as she knew her kids are used to more flavour? For all you know this was a one off junky meal out for a birthday treat or something. You shouldn't be so judgy.

00100001 · 26/04/2019 15:23

And I'd say there was approximately 45 grains of salt on each nugget. Unacceptable.

HAHAHAHAHAHHA

45? how did you count them? Did you linger at the table that long you could 'tell' there were approximately 45 grains? Confused

Or did you do a 5 second fast flow salt, count all the grains and divide that by the number of nuggets?

Sabrinatheteenagebitchx · 26/04/2019 15:26

@00100001 haven't you ever heard of sarcasm?

OP posts:
00100001 · 26/04/2019 15:27

Wait so now you're being saracastic?

are you being sarcastic in your OP then?

Rosesaredead · 26/04/2019 15:29

Also it seems weird that you don't understand the hypocrisy between 1) your happily serving children a plate of processed meat and fried food and then 2) complaining that the mum added salt?! As if the salt is the worst thing on that plate! Like it's weird that you're so judgy about this one particular event but you're fine about the general crappy food served there

Rosesaredead · 26/04/2019 15:31

Also - why are you so afraid of salt?! What do you think a little added salt will do to you? This is all so weird.

PandyCuff · 26/04/2019 15:49

Sabrina you are getting a helluva roasting, you might as well have explained the problem with salt!

No fear though, plantpotparrot has posted recommended intakes..

up to 12 months – less than 1g of salt a day (less than 0.4g sodium)
1 to 3 years – 2g of salt a day (0.8g sodium)
4 to 6 years – 3g of salt a day (1.2g sodium)
7 to 10 years – 5g of salt a day (2g sodium)
11 years and over – 6g of salt a day (2.4g sodium)

See, I struggle to understand how you WOULD exceed that? A person's diet would need to be purely salted crisps surely?

NB not sure how much is a gram of salt? Is it a teaspoon?

Sabrinatheteenagebitchx · 26/04/2019 15:53

Like it's weird that you're so judgy about this one particular event but you're fine about the general crappy food served there

@Rosesaredead how many times have i written throughout this thread the food is salty enough so why add more.

OP posts:
BorisBadunov · 26/04/2019 15:55

@PandyCuff, a teaspoon of salt would actually be 5g.

00100001 · 26/04/2019 15:56

OP, are you being sarcastic in your OP??

Pumperthepumper · 26/04/2019 15:59

This thread is ridiculous, AIBU is such an embarrassment these days. Can’t believe there are posters jumping on the OP for guessing how much salt was on the food, when it was so clearly a joke response to a joke question.

Eliza9919 that link is totally out of order on a thread with no trigger warnings - you posted it to get a reaction, which is completely sickening. Shame on you.

Purpleartichoke · 26/04/2019 16:03

Or ma

Purpleartichoke · 26/04/2019 16:09

Or maybe her kids have had that meal dozens of times and she knows exactly how they like it..
Maybe her kids have a sensory disorder and are ridiculously picky about food and she is just happy this is one meal they will actually eat because kids need calories and it’s horrifying watching your child prefer going hungry to eating.

Maybe her kids have a massive salt deficiency.

I get judged about what I feed my dd all the time. I mostly take the change of subject approach, but every once in awhile the perpetrator will get an earful about doctor’s advice and falling off the weight chart, and only selecting easy meals when we are out because no one else should have to listen to her gagging over being forced to touch an undesired food to her tongue.

thisisthetime · 26/04/2019 16:09

Sodium is actually needed for a healthy body. It’s an electrolyte and necessary. Salt has been demonised but I think it’s more fast and processed food that’s to blame than salt. There’s lots of research to back this up and don’t be surprised if the tables turn on salt in the next few years. Maybe she’s ahead of the game?! Grin

bloodywhitecat · 26/04/2019 16:10

I just want to know where this pub with decent salt shakers is, I don't think I have ever found a pub with a decent salt shaker and I love a good dose of salt on my chips.

Nofunkingworriesmate · 26/04/2019 16:10

I once observed a mum painstakingly brush every speck of salt OFF her sons portion of chips in a pub before he was allowed to eat them in a very obvious show of “ gosh we just never usually feed our son in a pub it’s only ever mange tout and homous “

Yes op it’s unhealthy and a bad habit but are any of us perfect? Maybe your kids were eating crisps while glued to utube while you were at work ???
