So i work in a pub, i was serving a family of four (2 kids between 6 and 10ish) the kids were off playing in the play area when i bought over their meals. The kids both had chicken nuggets and chips (no veg) and as soon as i put the plates down the mother poured salt all over both of the kids meals without even asking them if they wanted it!!!

Why? Why why why would you ever do this?! Why do the childen need any extra salt to an already salty meal? She didn't even give them a choice just poured it all over the meals without even asking them. They dont even get a choice in whether they get an addrd salt diet or not. Id never even dream of putting any added salt in mine or my children food. Also any salt for that matter, I wont buy any high in salt foods.

Sorry this is a rant just upset me the children didnt even get a choice in whether they eat salt or not. Start as you mean to go on i suppose...

My 3yo still doesn’t know what salt is and it will remain that way until she figures it outGrin YANBU OP. Children don’t need extra salt, no one does really

CheeseIsEverything · 27/04/2019 09:30

Saying no one does is completely incorrect, as PP have pointed out already. Some of whom have even been advised by their GP to add more salt to what they/their child eats.

DeadWife · 27/04/2019 09:40

There's just no need to be so, well, salty.

But isnt chicken nuggets and chips salty enough?

Its the fact they weren't given a choice to have it or not. They weren't little children im sure they could have done it themselves if they wanted it.

Perhaps it is for some people. But chips aren't salty as they are unless you salt them in the kitchen before serving. I presume you don't so, as this thread shows, it's perfectly normal to salt chips. I would guess that the vast majority of people put salt on them.

mybaloney · 27/04/2019 10:51

Who cares!!! Salt isn't bad!

Sabrinatheteenagebitchx · 27/04/2019 11:00

Salt isn't bad. Yeah okay then.
McDonald's will be part of your 5 a day soon.

Salt isn't bad!

Only if you stick to the recommended daily allowance.

freetone · 27/04/2019 11:18

Is it lack of sodium why some children need more salt? Never heard of that before, sounds interesting! How do doctors notice they’re not getting enough?

grasspigeons · 27/04/2019 11:24

I was about to say maybe they had Cystic Fibrosis and need the salt. But it looks like others have raised high salt diets.

starzig · 27/04/2019 11:36

Dont know how they test for it freetone but cramps is generally the main symptom of lack of sodium. I get this a lot.

Aprillygirl · 27/04/2019 11:55

Yanbu op. I still tell my kids off, for putting salt on their food before tasting, now and they're aged 16 to 25 lol.

Strugglingtodomybest · 27/04/2019 12:12

I'm just marking my place to find out how you magically tell which children need extra salt, on doctors orders, just by looking at them.

I don't think adding salt to nuggets and chips is bad either. Chips are horrible without salt.

TheGoalIsToStayOutOfTheHole · 27/04/2019 12:32

I couldn't get worked up about this tbh.

And pub lunches are generally really unhealthy, especially the kids meals. Mind, our local has recently added the option of getting the adult menu but in child sizes, which is much preferabe to the stock options of sausage and mash or chicken nuggets and chips!

Must remember to ask my children if they know what salt is so I can qualify for an illustrious parenting award!

Anyone who eats chips without salt is a heathen and should be shunned from civilised society.

SauvignonBlanche · 27/04/2019 12:56

I was about to say about CF, I’ve seen someone admonished for putting salt on the food of a child with CF, best not to judge without knowing the full story.

RightYesButNo · 27/04/2019 12:59

Just for some guidance, OP, you’ve made comments about salt and high blood pressure. But a study, completed in 2017 that had been going on for 16 years, showed that people who ate less than 2500mg of salt a day were actually more likely to have high blood pressure than those who consumed more. The head of the study said: “We saw no evidence that a diet lower in sodium had any long-term beneficial effects on blood pressure. Our findings add to growing evidence that current recommendations for sodium intake may be misguided.” www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/317099.php

They believe it’s more complex than we previously thought, so I wouldn’t be too quick to keep your children and partner away from salt.

QuestionableMouse · 27/04/2019 13:01

I linked that pages back but the op seems to be ignoring it!

mybaloney · 27/04/2019 13:16

@Sabrinatheteenagebitchx great link there. MacDonald's is only unhealthy because of the salt, why didn't I think of that. It's great you've bothered to read the links and do research so you're actually aware of what is going into your kids bodies, and not just spouting crap. Oh no wait, you haven't.

isabellerossignol · 27/04/2019 13:23

I would guess that in the past people are more salt since that's how things were preserved. Although I'm prepared to be told that I'm completely wrong.

My MIL in obsessed with salt and the avoidance of it. However, she is also obsessed with food in general and sees enjoying food of any sort as being some sort of moral weakness. Food should be bland and an ordeal to eat otherwise you are no better than an animal. It's very strange.

mintyneb · 27/04/2019 13:24

Fairylights, I thought you might be in the same boat as us. DD is 12 now but when she was younger I always expected someone to come up and challenge us over the salt we were pouring on her meal. In answer to the question 'what do you think you are doing?'...... I was always going to say 'exactly what the consultant told us to do!'

Lweji · 27/04/2019 13:38

Salt isn't bad. Yeah okay then.

Indeed, it's not poison.

Do you know what salt is?
Do you know that we need the sodium and the chloride in salt for our bodies to function?

If you think salt is bad, you should Google dihydrogen monoxide. It's shockingly bad by comparison and yet I bet you take it without concerns.

mybaloney · 27/04/2019 13:46

@Lweji 😂
