To be this upset about minor racist joke

I am on a business trip to my country of birth, where I secured a major win today for my British employer. I should be celebrating but instead I am so upset😠
A colleague who is travelling with me called the HQ and when he said "I am calling from jetlag's country" the response was "I am amazed they have mobile network there". They were both very chuffed at the joke.
This is a wealthy country with very developed infrastructure.
I am seething and not able to sleep. Please tell me the iabu and then we can be done with it.

I’m sorry but that isn’t in any way racist. It’s just a joke about phone signal.

Jetlaggedandangry · 26/04/2019 19:37

let me guess - do the same company make sexist "jokes" to keep wimmin in their place?

How did you guess?

Tell them your country isn’t stupid enough to vote for Brexit. And doesn’t want to take itself back to the 1950s. And isn’t full of right wing racists.

Oh' OP I would love someone to make a joke like that with me...I'd run a mile with it......eventually the penny would drop and they'd look complete twats.
Rise above and look down.

I just love it when someone experiencing racism is told they're over sensitive. Well done

It wasn’t a racist comment though. Referring to the level of development of a country or lack thereof whether accurate or not is not racism.

I am from England but live abroad. The level of ignorance of the UK and dare I say even London is astounding. I don’t expect people to have much knowledge of a country that has no connection to them and often they have never been to. I don’t think it even makes them especially ignorant individuals. It certainly isn’t racist.

I can understand how someone who has experienced racism could be sensitive to this kind of comment and internalize it as racism. But it doesn’t change the fact that it isn’t a racist comment.

You secured the major win for your company in your home country. They made snidey/racist remark - suggests to me they are envious of your success. Don’t go to sleep upset, instead bask in your success !

Nope....they really didn't. They made a run of the mill joke, that the Op has totally over reacted to.

hellodarkness · 26/04/2019 21:43

I'm originally from another country, often the butt of jokes. It has honestly never occurred to me to care, they are joking about (or insulting, depending on your point of view) a country, not me. And jokes that stereotype an entire country are not racist, as pp have pointed out. OP, there is something wrong with your self esteem if it can be so seriously dented by an overheard joke about phone signal in a country you no longer reside in.
