To expect guests to bring toothpaste?

peanacat · 25/04/2019 20:22

Please settle a debate, all the guests we have from dh side (family and friends it seems) never bring their own toothpaste to use when they visit. Never been an issue with my side of the family. (Geographical thing maybe?)

Me and dh share toothpaste but I find it weird that people don’t bring their own to use when they visit and we have to share ours with the guests?

I have no idea why it irritates me so much, but just seems weird and kinda germy Confused
Do you all take toothpaste when you go and stay somewhere?

I bring my own toothpaste when staying anywhere except my parents, but the guest room has its own bathroom so I like to pretend I am a travel lodge and always have shower gel, toothpaste and a dressing gown available so if people want to use them they can

Bringbackthestripes · 26/04/2019 00:34

May it be assumed that no human who finds a shared thbe of toothpaste abhorrent has ever given or received a blow job. Just interested in the overall standards of hygiene

No, I give DH blow jobs but the thought of sharing toothpaste with him is gross. Likewise he would happily spend all day performing oral sex but he can’t let me lick his ice cream to taste it and the thought of taking food of other peoples plates makes him want to throw up.
We are all different and all have boundaries.
I love DC to death and could perform mouth to mouth on DC in a second but, I still don’t want to share the same toothpaste, because I’ve seen the way they drag their bristles over the tube!

If teeth cleaning is going on it’s because teeth are dirty and need cleaning, so that is not something you need to be sharing hygiene products for,

Sparklingbrook · 26/04/2019 00:37

This thread just keeps on giving. Grin

canadianbanana · 26/04/2019 00:47

It always seem germ to me too - though I’ve not thought about why! I always bring my own toothpaste though.

SenecaFalls · 26/04/2019 01:12

This thread is an eye-opener. I just assumed everyone took their own toothpaste with them when they travel. I always do. So does DH (we use different brands.) Also I have never had a house guest ask me for toothpaste, even my own adult children. I don't have any in the guest room bathroom so they would have to ask if they didn't bring their own.

TheFastandCurious · 26/04/2019 05:29

I always bring toothpaste just in case they are running low or they have manky toothpaste (lid off, dried lumps round top etc) but would just use theirs otherwise.

Always bring my own brush though!

GreasyFryUp · 26/04/2019 06:32

Get this - I've been offered and used someone's toothbrush after an unexpected one night stand. Sweet of him to offer. Given what we got up to in the night the thought of germs didn't really cross my mind!

BastianBux · 26/04/2019 06:37

I wouldn't even think to pack my own toothpaste. Bizarre.

BastianBux · 26/04/2019 06:38

Also I have never had a house guest ask me for toothpaste, even my own adult children. I don't have any in the guest room bathroom so they would have to ask if they didn't bring their own.

Neither have we, but we just have the one bathroom with toothpaste always in there.

GottenGottenGotten · 26/04/2019 06:42

I agree, I think that is bizarre. Of course it wouldn't bother me if someone turned up expecting to use mine, but they will have to put up with the fact that it's probably not the toothpaste they would choose to use.

LynetteScavo · 26/04/2019 06:58

YANBU OP

I would not lend anyone my toothpaste and if I had to I would not use it again.

I would never,
ever use someone else's.

I don't even want to see anybody brushing their teeth.

longwayoff · 26/04/2019 07:00

How odd people are. Get some guest stuff for guests to use. Aldi, Lidl, £ shop, minimal cost.

OliviaBenson · 26/04/2019 07:05

Weird!!

To be fair this is a problem of your own making as you threw away perfectly usable toothpaste. Just because it's been open more than 12months doesn't mean it can't be used. How wasteful.

The mind boggles at blow jobs being ok but not sharing toothpaste.....

BastianBux · 26/04/2019 07:13

I mean I think it's bizarre that you expect people to bring their own. Nobody I know does that or expects others to.

ketchupormayo · 26/04/2019 07:14

I use theirs!! And people use mine when they come. Not a big deal!?

gamerwidow · 26/04/2019 07:25

Tooth paste is something that’s meant to be shared though. It’s not like toothbrushes. Do people really buy a separate tube of toothpaste for everyone in their house?

ScreamScreamIceCream · 26/04/2019 07:25

Due to the gaps in my teeth I use small toothbrushes first so any toothpaste doesn't go on my brush it goes on a clean finger, which then goes in my mouth. Prior to that I would always ensure the toothpaste didn't touch the bristles as that's how I've been taught.

So those presuming everyone's bristles will touch the toothpaste are wrong and paranoid.

Theoldwoman · 26/04/2019 07:27

How can it be germy? It's not like you stick your finger on the tube opening?

I take mine away, but don't care if guests use ours.

Sparklesocks · 26/04/2019 08:19

I never bring my own to friends or family houses, and I would be happy to share mine with them too if they come to mine.
Toothpaste sharing isn’t germy in my eyes as you squirt it onto the brush, I don’t rub the brush on the opening or anything!
Also you come into contact with an unbelievable amount of germs from other people in day to day life, as long as you wash your hands properly toothpaste won’t be the thing that finishes you off!!

GottenGottenGotten · 26/04/2019 08:27

But not everyone uses just normal colgate or whatever toothpaste. So if someone used prescription only toothpaste, would you expect to turn up and use that?

regmover · 26/04/2019 08:30

This is an eye opener. I've always got toothpaste in my sponge bag for when I go away and it never occurred to me that visitors might use my toothpaste. I mean, it just never occurred to me.

BlueSkiesLies · 26/04/2019 08:36

But not everyone uses just normal colgate or whatever toothpaste. So if someone used prescription only toothpaste, would you expect to turn up and use that?

I have expensive prescription toothpaste. It honestly wouldn’t bother me if someone used it. It lasts for months anyway and I don’t have that many visitors!

BlueSkiesLies · 26/04/2019 08:37

The mind boggles at blow jobs being ok but not sharing toothpaste....

My DP is funny about stuff like this.

Happy to give me oral sex. Happy to snog.

Hell would freeze over before he let me have a lick of his ice cream, or he would take a lick of mine. I think he’s weird.

GottenGottenGotten · 26/04/2019 08:40

That's missing the point blueskies, I'm OK with people using my toothpaste I just think it's wierd to turn up and expect to use someone else's.

I mean, not even hotels provide toothpaste. Well some might, but none I've ever stayed in. Imo if toiletries are not supplied as standard in a hotel its a bit odd to not supply your own.

WokenUp · 26/04/2019 08:58

This has been such a shocking thread.
First of all, that people think it's germy to share Tpaste - it's honestly never crossed my mind
Secondly that if you have guests stay using "their own" bathroom (be that en suite or stand alone) that some hosts wouldn't provide basic toiletries?! Eh?!
I would always provide toiletries, towels, loo roll, (Unused hotel) slippers and a clean robe.
Isn't that what hosts are meant to do? You know, host?

Buy your guests some toothpaste and stop making them have to ask you for rations - how embarrassing!!
