To think lots of people have a chip on their shoulder about Oxbridge?

So many people are eager to disparage the two universities for pretty much anything. So many people are sensitive that one could be looking down their noses at them because they didn't also go to Oxbridge.

Is this a vote? I have no feelings on it whatsoever!

AnyFucker · 25/04/2019 19:42

I can honestly say I have never given this subject matter any thought at all. Nor do I know anyone who has expressed any opinion on anything to do with it.

Hawkinsfirefly99 · 25/04/2019 19:47

What is the point in this thread?

Did you go to Oxbridge and so expect everyone to look up to you for that?

I don't think anyone really cares one way or the other.

MissEliza · 25/04/2019 19:48

Never heard anyone 'disparage' either university for anything other than being dominated by 'posh' kids. Frankly I'd love to have gone to Oxford. It's such a beautiful city.

DoneLikeAKipper · 25/04/2019 19:51

I have issues with how selective they are, up until recently it just seemed to be a last educational step for rich, white, future Tory MPs/BBC higher-ups. Sadly, that’s often the case in many selective situations though, so generally couldn’t give a shit.

Bluntness100 · 25/04/2019 19:53

I've never heard anyone disparage them either, they are good unis, the only slight negative would be discussions on the percentage of privately educated students versus state. Past that, like many other unis they seem to be well respected.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 25/04/2019 20:00

I can't think that I've heard anything bad said about them to be honest. They are two of our great educational establishments.

Would I have gone there? No. But only because I really don't think that it would have been a good fit for for me socially; educationally it would have been amazing Smile

moonrises · 25/04/2019 20:01

Oxford rejected me.

Oh wait, it was Oxford Brookes that did.Wink

In my day there was definitely a 'look down the nose' towards the ex-poly's and the college's of higher education. Maybe that still exists today though, there can be an air of "only a RG degree is worth anything"

Pk37 · 25/04/2019 20:02

Meh , doesn’t bother me

AutumnCrow · 25/04/2019 20:03

Nope

Bluntness100 · 25/04/2019 20:05

Who are you talking to op and where are you hearing these comments?

As a country we tend to be quite respectful to our educational institutes, but we may discuss or disagree with things like selection criteria or student demo graphics etc,

The ex polys do tend to get the least respect, but even then they are stil, respected. So I think we are all a bit confused by your thread.

Quintella · 25/04/2019 20:05

sensitive that one could be looking down their noses at them because they didn't also go to Oxbridge.

Does one have more than one shnozz?

chippingalong · 25/04/2019 20:09

Only in quite specific situations would this happen (but I do know what you mean), do you have any examples OP?

prettyLittlefool · 25/04/2019 20:24

It's just jealously. Oxford and Cambridge are the elite institutions. There is all sorts of snobbery in education. Two students will judge each other based on what they are studying. Law will get you more respect than Nutrition.

Media studies was always the target of humour in my day.

SandyY2K · 25/04/2019 20:28

You haven't articulated yourself well enough and it's unclear from your thread title and your opening post exactly what you're trying to say.

greensmith · 25/04/2019 20:30

sandy

Take it you didn't go to either then?

OP posts:
AnyFucker · 25/04/2019 20:31

Did you go there, op ?

Holidayshopping · 25/04/2019 20:33

OP-why don’t you actually explain what you are talking about?

Who is it that you think is being disparaging about Oxford or Cambridge?!

StillCoughingandLaughing · 25/04/2019 20:38

sandy - Take it you didn't go to either then?
Oh, it’s goady time.

Let me put it in terms you’ll understand, OP - this thread is the equivalent of Information and Library Studies at an ex-poly.

Chippychipsforme · 25/04/2019 20:48

I'm not a big fan of anywhere with that much inequality.

Quintella · 25/04/2019 21:00

This reminds me of Jacob Rees Mogg berating one his fellow Tories recently for behaving like a Wykehamist rather than an Old Etonian. So very important to those who attended Winchester or Eton but everyone else rolls their eyes and thinks 'what are you wittering on about?'. Just goes to show that you can attend schools and universities that offer a world class education and emerge at the end of it with a parochial world view.

AnyFucker · 25/04/2019 21:07

And/or come out of it looking a complete twat.

Schuyler · 25/04/2019 21:08

I don’t really have strong opinions on Oxford or Cambridge. I also have no idea what this thread is about, to be honest.

Quintella · 25/04/2019 21:08

That too! Grin
