Cake-gate

I work in an office environment, in a team of around 20. Before the Easter weekend, I was chatting in the staff room on a break about how I've recently really got into baking, and one of my colleagues jokingly said that she wouldn't mind if I bought some cake to work for her to try. I promised I'd bring some home made cakes in after Easter.

Fast forward to today. I take in four different homemade cakes. I also took in some little vegan cake bites from Tesco, as we have 2 vegans in the office and I wanted them to be able to eat something nice too (everything I baked had flour/eggs in)

One of the vegans approached me at lunch, and told me that she was really disappointed that I hadn't made the effort to home bake anything vegan, and that I had promised homemade cakes, so I should have provided that for everyone. She said she didn't like the vegan cakes I'd bought from Tesco, and that she was fed up with being left out of team lunches/treats.

I was a bit taken aback, so apologised. But the more I think about it, the more I think she was actually the unreasonable one...

Thoughts?

(And really, have you people never had eggs with chicken poo still stuck to the shell?)

NaturalBornWoman · 24/04/2019 20:13

Yes, I use extra virgin olive oil or butter for everything.

Do you know you shouldn't cook with EV olive oil?

Yesicancancan · 24/04/2019 20:21

No good deed goes unpunished.

Yesicancancan · 24/04/2019 20:25

You actually can cook with EV oil, only deep frying is unsuitable due to the low burning temperature.

Cismyfatarse1 · 24/04/2019 20:27

Why don't you tell your colleague that it is her turn now - and you look forward to a nice buttery cream cake - seeing as she advocates baking for all tastes.

MyGastIsFlabbered · 24/04/2019 20:46

These whiny vegans give us a bad name. If I want home made vegan cake I make it myself! I'd have been chuffed that you'd remembered I was vegan enough to buy something from Tesco. I'm used to my dietary choices meaning I miss out on goodies.

Sorry, I've just come back to this thread after a super busy day!

Just to clarify, I didn't create this thread to have an opportunity for everyone to vegan-bash. This one just unfortunately happens to be an entitled cheeky-cake-fucker.

I walked into the break room earlier today to catch the tail end of her moaning to another colleague about my cakes yesterday. Other colleague saw me, and quickly berated CCF and asked her to think about what she was saying, and how rude she was being. CCF had the good grace to blush and scuttle off.
She later approached me and apologised if she had upset me at all. I told her not to worry, and that I would try and bake a vegan cake in the future, but she would have to eat it all regardless of how disgusting it tasted 😉
I never set out to deliberately leave anyone out. I've never baked a vegan cake, and so would not have a clue how it would taste etc without trying it first.

The 'nice' vegan was totally chuffed yesterday by the vegan bits I bought in, and she also told me today that CCF was out of order in her opinion.

For the person that asked, this is the Apple cake recipe I use - I love it 🙂

Thank you everyone for your comments! Some have really made me chuckle x

Do you know you shouldn't cook with EV olive oil? I use it to gently fry onion, spices, and so on, on low heat, it doesn't smoke, so I thought that was fine?

Ohyesiam · 24/04/2019 22:08

She’s probably only a vegan to piss people off and have something to be offended aboutGrin

ahtellthee · 24/04/2019 22:19

Lemon drizzle!!!!

Ps: I am a vegan, never expect anything (usually take my food even to get togethers) so I would have been delighted.

She's apologised, I would leave it at that. But she is a blatant CCF.

Numptywallice · 24/04/2019 22:35

Tell her in the words off the great Mr Kipling, “she is exceedingly rude.”

Cautionsharpblade · 24/04/2019 22:37

Nigella Lawson’s dark & sumptuous chocolate cake is vegan and tastes great

MountPheasant · 24/04/2019 22:43

OP your only option now is to bake a vegan cake in your next bake batch...perfectly times for when the CFvegan is off work.

What a shame! All for the nice vegan instead!

yearinyearout · 24/04/2019 22:44

She's a twat.

Spinnaret · 24/04/2019 22:52

I walked into the break room earlier today to catch the tail end of her moaning to another colleague about my cakes yesterday.

She was still whining about it today?! Shock She really is one of 'those' vegans. Who give normal, unassuming, going through life without making a fuss vegans a bad rep.

I'd be tempted to bake a normal cake and pretend it was vegan, but that would be wrong, so I wouldn't do it.

Poloshot · 24/04/2019 22:56

I'd have told the weirdo to shove the vegan cake from Tesco up her arse the freak.

QueenOfTheTofuTree · 24/04/2019 22:56

You bought her some cakes from Tesco so she wasn't left out. She had something to eat.

I do however think you started this thread because you wanted to see another vegan bashing thread on here so YABVU for that alone.

llangennith · 24/04/2019 22:59

Bit spiteful Queen

QueenOfTheTofuTree · 24/04/2019 23:02

Why?

The OP brought cakes in for the vegan. They might not have been homemade or even to that particular vegans liking but the OP obviously did accommodate her.

It is not logical for the OP to conclude that she is the one in the wrong when it was the vegan being an entitled arse. So what other reason would the OP have to start the thread if not wanting another bloody vegan bash?

QueenOfTheTofuTree · 24/04/2019 23:03

And clearly it's worked.

So.Well.Bloody.Done.

SecretLimonadeDrinker · 24/04/2019 23:12

@Inniu we have a few family members with egg allergies, both yogurt and applesauce make excellent replacements. I normally yogurt.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but AIBU is the place to post when you want others opinions on whether you were in the wrong?
Quite often, people are certain that they are in the right, the post on here, and it's decided unanimously that they are in fact the unreasonable one.
I was asking people's opinions on whether I should have made a vegan cake, rather than buying something for them instead. I'd say 90% of people agreed with me, whereas some felt that I could have gone to the effort of googling a suitable recipe. I've taken that on board, and will try and make one in the future.

I think your slow clap is misplaced, but nice try 😉

@QueenOfTheTofuTree

I think that’s a bit of a stretch. It’s a CF story. When dealing with a CF, it’s pretty normal to question whether they are, indeed, a CF, or whether one’s own perception is skewed in some way. Hence the OP. The fact that the CF in question is vegan and chooses to act like a spoiled princess about it is entirely her fault, not the OP’s. Yes, a bit unfortunate for the vegans on here who are not entitled arseholes, but I would hope you can credit us non-vegans with enough intelligence to know that this CF is simply one bad apple and not representative of vegans generally.

I don’t think I’ve witnessed any vegan-bashing here anyway, just disagreement as to whether the OP should have baked a vegan cake. Disagreement does not equate to bashing.

QueenOfTheTofuTree · 24/04/2019 23:25

OK.

No you shouldn't have made a vegan cake. Chances are it would turn out disgusting if you're not used to making them. A shop bought cake is a much safer option even if it might not be to that particular vegans taste.

Vegan has apologised for her behaviour so let's just move on.

8Wina4 · 24/04/2019 23:35

Queen

Feel free to move on... 👋
