I always thought it was bring to, take from. But you can take someone or something from somewhere to somewhere, in which case whether you use bring or take can be dependent on context...

BethanyGilbert · 25/04/2019 06:26

I find threads like this hugely unfair. Because of our local dialect I make loads of mistakes like this. I didn’t even know you didn’t say would of until I was doing my masters. How can you “hate”’people for not knowing any better?

longwayoff · 25/04/2019 08:44

Bethany, they're not mistakes, don't be distressed. This is simple sneery oneupmanship, people making themselves feel better by making others feel worse. Laugh at them.

EmeraldShamrock · 25/04/2019 11:57

@BethanyGilbert
I wouldn't worry to much about judgey people. They haven't left the playground yet, educated but ignorant. I'd rather be ignorant from lack of knowledge and education, at least I can learn and change.
As I said to correct in kindness is another thing entirely.

M4J4 · 25/04/2019 12:23

@echt

It was the first time I'd seen sub-literate stuff, in writing yet, on the TV

The sentence above is grammatically incorrect as well, though!

Is it? How? I would never claim not to make errors, but can't see what's wrong with it.

I make mistakes all the time, but yep, that sentence would never be published anywhere, because of the 'in writing yet' in commas. Hopefully a grammar pedant can explain why!

RockinHippy · 25/04/2019 12:43

Hate. YABVVU Confused

Crikey you need to lighten up, there are FAR worse things in the world to hate over

It would irritate me in an article or similar, where good grammar should be expected & the author is paid or promoting themselves to do a job, but otherwise. Meh, life's too short🤷🏽‍♀️

fascicle · 25/04/2019 13:18

It’s not fucking hard!!!!!

If you want to be a grammar pedant (especially one who judges others so harshly), you need to lose at least four of those exclamation marks.

echt · 25/04/2019 14:56

There's nothing wrong with that use of commas. Try removing them and see if the sentence makes sense. Clue: it won't.

CharityConundrum · 25/04/2019 18:23

TBH it doesn't make sense to me with the commas - what does the 'yet' refer to? I think I've read it too many times for my brain to process it now!

MsChookandtheelvesofFahFah · 25/04/2019 18:35

Yes, I'm not sure about the 'yet', thought it might be an acronym...

longwayoff · 25/04/2019 20:53

Echt, the commas are placed incorrectly.

KissingInTheRain · 25/04/2019 23:41

It’s not incorrect, just old-fashioned.

in writing yet is the same as and in writing to boot, or the like.

CharityConundrum · 26/04/2019 01:13

OK, I get it now I've actually watched the ad and seen that it's actually in print on the screen at the end, not just in the voiceover which does make more sense.

Fromablokespoint · 26/04/2019 12:45

I hate people who overly use punctuation!!!!!

(Taken from the internet)

When and how should I use multiple exclamation marks?

Never.

At least not for grammatical purposes. More than one exclamation mark doesn't have any meaning. An exclamation doesn't get more "exclamationy" by more marks.

Of course, you could still use them, but the interpretation would be entirely up to the reader. Use of punctuation that doesn't have any grounds in grammar would be more like decoration.

I've seen people invent their own style of punctuation,,,like triple commas,,,but that of course doesn't have any meaning either,,, it mostly makes the person look unstable...

What kills me is

I’ve won you! No it’s I beat you!

I’ll learn my kids real English-said by a mum I was walking behind going to school-I almost smacked her with my handbag-it’s teach not learn!

Arrrggghhh!

DonkeyHohtay · 26/04/2019 13:46

The ones I see more frequently are 'was' and 'were' eg "we was in the queue..."

This is the way that the cast of Eastenders speaks, and Lord Sugar on the Apprentice. "So what was you doing on that task?" "Was you?"

Just makes me think the speaker is uneducated, a bit dim, or both.

MardyBra · 26/04/2019 13:48

I’m not exactly enamoured by people who overuse exclamation marks. (See OP).

MardyBra · 26/04/2019 13:49

Oh, just seen I should have RTFT.

chocolatelog · 26/04/2019 13:51

I often get pulled up on here for my grammar 🙄 I left school at 9. I don't know the difference between he's/his there/their/they're was/were and I couldn't give a feck either.

Wholetthekidsout · 26/04/2019 13:55

Calm down. My DCs say 'you was' so I appreciate the frustration, but there's no need to be a hater.

DonkeyHohtay · 26/04/2019 13:56

Because of our local dialect I make loads of mistakes like this. I didn’t even know you didn’t say would of until I was doing my masters.

But this makes no sense. I live in an area where some people have a strong dialect (Glasgow). However, you do not just drift through life only hearing that dialect. Switch on the TV and you hear English speakers from all over the world. You should never see "would of" printed in a book, decent newspaper or magazine. At school, you are taught would have, could have, should have.

Huggybear16 · 26/04/2019 14:13

Hate is a bit OTT, do you never make any mistakes

The OP shows that she certainly does. Also the username "mumofanoxonian" is so cringe worthy, I'm embarrassed for you.

Lifeonmars77 · 26/04/2019 14:24

I was going to share something funny on Facebook the other day, then noticed it included the incorrect use of 'Your'. It should have been 'You're'. I actually couldn't bring myself to share it.

Hating the person is a bit unreasonable though. Have you tried meditation OP? Wink

Also, when replying to a thread involving spelling/grammar, does anyone find themselves checking and double checking their post? God forbid we should make a mistake and get called out on it Grin

No punctuation at the end of the last sentence. Wink

Lifeonmars77 · 26/04/2019 17:46

Haha fuck! I knew it! The pressure was obviously too much. 😄
