My secretary frequently changes my dictation from ‘we were’ to ‘we was’ etc when she types my letters. ‘Could have’ is also changed to ‘could of’.

Probably because she believes her grammar is more accurate than mine as I’m not originally from Britain.

Disfordarkchocolate · 24/04/2019 07:39

I save my ire for the crap English teachers who didn't teach me the basics many people take for granted.

MsTSwift · 24/04/2019 07:42

If I hear “less people” or similar on radio 4 one more time I will...well I won’t do anything buts it’s annoying

MsChookandtheelvesofFahFah · 24/04/2019 07:44

Was/were is slightly odd though as you (singular) should be 'you was' if conjugated using normal rules but we all say 'you were'.

I was
You was
He was
She was
We were
You were
They were

Smidge001 · 24/04/2019 07:55

Huh?!

FuriousCheekyFucker · 24/04/2019 08:04

The growing prevalence of substituting "brought" for "bought" and vice versa. Makes my fucking teeth itch.

echt · 24/04/2019 08:13

It's because the second person singular used to be "thou", so "thou wert" We lost the "thou" to "you" but kept a version of "wert", so "you were".

‘We was’ sounds horrid to my ears. My 2 year old is currently saying my for me and I’m trying to correct her gently. I’m not sure at what age you need to be stricter about correcting grammar. It is easy to be a bit sneery but ultimately I imagine it’s hard to change (or even be aware) of grammar mistakes as an adult if you weren’t corrected as a child.

havingtochangeusernameagain · 24/04/2019 08:42

I dislike the grammar pedants who say the "personal data are". Ok maybe data is technically plural. But you never use the word "datum".

I tend to get around it by saying "personal information".

But the thing that gets to me the most is people who say they are excited "for" something, when they mean they are excited "about" it, or are looking forward to it.

Ouch!

JuniorAsparagus · 24/04/2019 08:46

I were/we was is part of the local idiom here. When I was teaching if you corrected children some of them would look totally bemused.

EdWinchester · 24/04/2019 08:51

How on earth did she get (or keep) that job?

echt · 24/04/2019 09:09

What do you think "to^ this dress, scarf, etc. when it should be "of". Rife on the Style and Beauty threads.

takemeouttonight · 24/04/2019 09:13

I dislike ‘seen’ instead of ‘saw’.. eg ‘I seen him earlier at the shops’

WheelyCote · 24/04/2019 09:14

A grammer thread....whyyyy.
All very nit picking

HBStowe · 24/04/2019 09:32

Bit of an overreaction...

borntobequiet · 24/04/2019 09:52

Strictly speaking, data and information have different meanings...data are raw facts and figures without context, information is contextualised data after processing. But I don’t get bothered about it...

outpinked · 24/04/2019 09:56

Hate is a little strong.

I’m an English tutor so constantly pick up on grammatical errors. An acquaintance of mine is forever saying learn instead of teach which drives me berserk. I have to grit my teeth sometimes otherwise I’d likely have no friends left Grin. Constantly drum it into my DC though.

A pet peeve of mine is of instead of have.

x2boys · 24/04/2019 10:20

It annoys me when people say can you borrow me a fiver(or whatever) no I can lend you a fiver and you will have borrowed it .

EmeraldShamrock · 24/04/2019 10:53

kalopali
you know you’re dealing with an utter moron
You're not a nice person, educated yet seriously lacking empathy.

Nothininmenoggin · 24/04/2019 11:01

Ok maybe it annoys you....but hateHmm Surely there are far more "serious" issues in the world more worthy of your hatred than grammatical errors.

buckeejit · 24/04/2019 11:05

Yabu.

Your username is hilarious!

May I offer you a warning?

I would have gleefully joined in Blush with a thread like this a few years ago (especially the lack of correct adverbs from teenagers Wink) I kept a sharpie in my bag to correct signs etc

Then my brain decided to go faulty and in the process I lost a lot of my ability to spell or use correct grammar, and even remember words.

Now I see threads like this and

A. Think what a twat OP and other judgers are and I was
B. Feel a bit sad that people assume I'm thick or uneducated or lazy, when my life has gone enough to shit anyway

I realise I'm a retrospective twat myself Smile but please take me as a warning in case the same thing happens to you.

Plus you don't know whether someone actually is uneducated etc or they have similar issues, which after all, are a disability. You're saying you hate me (I realise this is an exaggeration) wholly due to a side effect of my disability. Feel good about yourself now?

Deliberately hurting peoples' feelings in an effort to make yourself look "superior" actually makes you a bit of a fuckmuppet.

Oysterbabe · 24/04/2019 12:43

My mum was the nicest woman in the world but due a truly horrific childhood barely attended school and had absolutely terrible spelling and grammar. She was very shy and self-conscious as a result of judgy cunts running her down because of it.
