long distance bus journey, approx 7 year old girl on one double seat, behind me, her mum, opposite me, on her own double seat, her mum spends virtually the entire journey ignoring her dc. the journey was 12 hours.
the daughter was talking to everyone else, climbing around, trying to do homework with, we assume, strangers,
the mum was for the first few hours on the phone, the phone was mostly on speaker phone,
then she covered herself up and lay across two seats to sleep, eventually woke up and covered her own now sleeping dd.
people came and sat next to her,
no attention was paid to the child the whole time. 
as you can imagine the child was pretty attention seeking
