To consider getting a wig?

My hair is awful. It’s brittle, has no life in it, no style (because I can’t style hair) and generally just looks shit. Adds 10 years on to my face.

My friend is half black and has affro hair, she once shaved it all off and got a wig instead and it looked amazing!

I’m white, not sure if it makes a difference to how good a wig would look but AIBU to consider it?

I'd do it, go to a wig shop and try some on. You can have so much fun too!! Different styles, different colours.
I wouldn't recommend buying online unless the site is reputable as you don't know the quality of the wig, i.e. The cap can be quite obvious, the quality of the hair can be awful.
Most town centres have wig/extension shops so you should be able to come across one quite easily, alternatively, as your friend where she got hers 😁

My only concern is do they fly off in the wind etc? Will I still have to style it as that would defeat the purpose. I only want something basic and natural looking, I’m not going to glamour as everyone knows I’m not! 😂

Yabu to consider it when it's just getting hot, you will be very sweaty.

I would say if you do decide to do it, invest in a good quality one which suits you. Try many on, take photos of your favourites then come back a week later to buy it once you've had time to mull it over.

My mum got a cheapo wig and looked ridiculous - and then was upset that it didn't look amazing!

My mum had a selection of wigs after chemo. She loved them so much that she kept her head shaved when her hair grew back and kept the wigs.

If it makes you happy, do it

I have witnessed my DM's wig coming off in the wind and the sight of her running after it still makes me giggle. Blush

I wear wigs due to alopecia. Lace front with super hold glue. Don’t even move a mm let alone fly off Grin

Ellabella989 · 23/04/2019 18:14

Look into lace frontal wigs or full lace wigs. They are held down with waterproof wig tape or glue and won’t budge at all

I had a wig after chemo. I gave it away to a mumsnetter so she could use it after her treatment. It looked really natural and was well made. It was a Banbury Postiche one from www.wigsuk.com

I had a thread about wigs last year. I use a lady who went through chemo too; she comes to my house - I sent her photographs of me and described what I wanted. I've been wearing it for a year and - yay! - my hair is growing.

It's never fallen off in the wind either; I was really worried about that too. It did fall off once but that was a freak accident!

My friend has a wig shop, she is an alopecia sufferer & found that most wig shops were very impersonal. She opened her own shop where she offers a full wig service from fitting, styling, colouring, maintenance & head accessories like sleep hats, headscarves, gripper bands. She is on Look North tomorrow night from her shop if you can get it on iPlayer.

tofudeepfried · 23/04/2019 19:25

go to a wig shop and get fitted, the styles these days are amazing. ignore all the posters who will say hot and sweaty. they nearly put me off and i am so glad i tooktheplunge.
