Taking a 12 day old baby on holiday ?

Jencottage · 20/04/2019 08:15

Desperate to get away as feel like I've been exhausted all third trimester, have a 8 year old daughter who would love a holiday, hubby coming along too. I've found an amazing deal in Sardinia, 7 nights at half term, full board and kids club for the 9 year old and golf for hubby. Me and baby could be on the beach all day chilling ! It's a 3.5 hour flight, shall I book it or is baby too young ? What would you do ?!?

Forget about the 12 day baby... who feels like taking a holiday with a baby before the wound of the c section heals?

Not for me thanks, but I would have appreciated someone taking the baby for a holiday while I recovered from it Grin

miracleon13th · 21/04/2019 19:05

Sounds crazy to me! You say you want some sun but you can't have a tiny baby like that out in the heat for hours on end! What's the problem waiting a few more weeks!

pollymere · 21/04/2019 19:06

Hmm. Not sure it's great for a new born to breathe the air on a plane. You are also assuming you'll be out of hospital by then with no issues.

MollyMinniesMum · 21/04/2019 19:07

Have you had a C section before? Do you realise what it’s going to be like? It would maybe be nicer to have. A holiday once you are fully healed from surgery (6 - 8 weeks)

TapasForTwo · 21/04/2019 19:07

FGS people. Read the OP's update Hmm

canadianbanana · 21/04/2019 19:13

I’m pretty sure you are not to be flying so soon after surgery. The risk of a blood clots is real. Plus you can’t use sunscreen on a baby and their skin is really delicate. Even in the shade, your baby is at risk for sun damage. I would absolutely not take this holiday. Sorry to rain on your parade, but I think it’s a bad idea.

BunnyJumps · 21/04/2019 19:14

I can't think of anything worse..

ToftyAC · 21/04/2019 19:14

Having had an EMCS I think you’re mad. But then I’ve had friends with ECSs that have been fine. I think if you feel you’re up to it well, get on that plane. My DS2 was a VBAC, but still don’t think I could have sat on a plane seat for that long with stitches. But, again, if you think you can handle it, go for it!

ddl1 · 21/04/2019 19:19

I would be cautious about that. You will be recovering from major surgery; and your baby may be very adaptable or may not be; may sleep much of the time, or may cry a great deal. Also planes are well known to be germ factories; and a new mother and a newborn baby are both likely to be vulnerable to infections. I would postpone it to another time myself.

The OP's posts are highlighted and easy to find.

I often look back at old threads relating to what I need advice on so the more comments the better imo.

Babyshah1 · 21/04/2019 19:34

I have took my son abroad when he was 2 months old on a 4 hour flight, he was absolutely fine. I don't think you would allowed to fly when baby is 12 days old and you need to wait 3- 4 weeks after you have a c-section. Maybe wait to baby is at least a month old to avoid any problems with the airlines xxx

greenpop21 · 21/04/2019 19:37

2 MONTHS IS DIFFERENT TO NOT EVEN 2 WEEKS!

FelicisNox · 21/04/2019 19:43

There are 3 main issues:

  1. will you and baby be fit to fly... the birth may not be plain sailing and you can't plan for every eventuality (I wouldn't even consider it less than 2 weeks post C Section). What if you get an infection or the baby is unwell at birth?

  2. Will you get a passport in time? You will need details of both parents and a birth certificate and although info states you can get your passport in a week it's highly unlikely.

  3. I thought babies were not (ideally) supposed to travel before their 6 week vaccinations as they have no immunity? You will need to discuss this with the GP/midwife. Personally I wouldn't risk it.

I'm very much a "each to their own" kind of person but I honestly this is madness.

Why? Why do it, why cut it THAT fine when you can find another deal at a later point?

You have no idea what will happen at the birth and I'm assuming you've never had a C Section before to think you can be running around getting birth certificates, passports and jetting off on holiday 12 days after having major abdominal surgery.

I know you're tired and desperate for a holiday but do you REALLY think it will be a rest when you are in pain, lactating and with a newborn baby with no sleep pattern?

I'm sorry but I think you're not thinking clearly.

All the best. X

YukoandHiro · 21/04/2019 19:45

Not worth it. What if you had feeding problems or other medical issues? You probably won't be discharged from the midwifery team by then anyway

FelicisNox · 21/04/2019 19:46

FGS people. Read the OP's update

13 pages in? No.

TheEternalForever · 21/04/2019 19:46

I've only read the first two pages so don't know if you've answered this same question but would you consider going to Devon/the seaside in the UK for a week instead? No hanging around airports and awful plane journeys, and you'd still be in the UK for if anything did happen and you needed to get to a hospital. Family friendly places e.g. Butlins always have kids clubs, or your OP can take your 8 year old out and about while you and baby relax in the hotel room. It would still be a holiday but seems a lot more convenient that abroad to me.

missbloomsbury · 21/04/2019 19:47

Dearest OP. Come to my country holiday cottage in an AONB. Total peace and quiet and if this weather keep up, all the sun by a pool, you could need! You’d be safer......

greeneyedlulu · 21/04/2019 19:51

Can't think of anything worse than being post op, away from home creature comforts in a hot country with a new born.
Can't you just wait til the next lot of school holidays to go?
I think you're setting yourself up for a disaster, I know you're tired now but I think this holiday would be far more exhausting!
Save it until you can enjoy it. Good luck with baby

nuxe1984 · 21/04/2019 19:54

I would go. It's your second baby so everything will slot into place and you'll be far more chilled than the first time around.

Only issue would be if there were problems with the birth and the baby.

I'd also check with your travel insurance.

Silvercatowner · 21/04/2019 19:58

Are you psychic or something?? How on earth can you know?

Timeforacupoftea · 21/04/2019 20:02

Way too early. Anything can happen that early. Sepsis, jaundice, feeding difficulties for baby.
You will just have had major surgery and your risks of complications still high. Bleeding, wound infection, DVT/PE.
I think this is not a good idea at all: wait a few months. And get first set of immunisations in before plane travel.

chocolatelog · 21/04/2019 20:04

Jesus Christ 🙈 I think your hormones are playing up. Think about it again in a weeks time.

sighrollseyes · 21/04/2019 20:04

I'm pretty sure you wouldn't get insurance for major abdominal surgery 12 days ago to fly!
