To ask if anyone else imagines themselves doing stupid/destructive things?

E.g we’ve got these lovely porcelain tiles in the bathroom and this evening I just kept imagining myself deliberately dropping a brick onto it. I couldn’t eject the thought from my brain.

Often when I’m carrying something fragile I imagine myself throwing it on the ground.

I have these kind of thoughts a lot.

Does this happen to anyone else or am I just a loon?

Nope, not just you. Its like l'appel du vide; the call of the void. Imagining jumping off when you're somewhere high up. Silly, you wouldn't, but you think about it.

MotherOfDragons90 · 19/04/2019 21:55

Shock I had no idea that was a thing but I always think about jumping anytime I’m up high. I obviously know I never would but I imagine myself doing it frequently Confused

Not just you! I really wanted to throw my phone out the open car window whilst DH was driving earlier. I didn't, but I get those weird little urges all the time.

MuddyMoose · 19/04/2019 22:01

I'm almost certain there is a medical name for this (I've tried to Google but had no luck as I ramble into the search bar 🙈). But I get it too. It's actually frightening sometimes how strong the urges are! The mind is a powerful thing.

ravenshope · 19/04/2019 22:04

It can be due to OCD.

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 19/04/2019 22:05

Yup..the most frequent and strongest one is to bite someone.Hmm
But jumping off when high, or what would happen if i jumped off the train platform, punch a window/mirror, get my foot stuck in the escalator etc.

Ivegotthree · 19/04/2019 22:07

I get this when it's something I value. Eg when I had a baby I feared falling down the stairs when carrying it.

I have a jug I love that was a wedding present and the man who made it is now dead. Every time I use it I imagine dropping it

Also in important work meetings I torture myself with the thought that I might do a really loud fart.

Awful and weird!

WhiteVixen · 19/04/2019 22:08

Mine is what would happen if I wrenched the steering wheel left or right whilst driving, especially when on the motorway.

WonderTweek · 19/04/2019 22:13

Yep, I get this loads. Some thoughts are quite surprising and sometimes unsettling but I am a bit of an OCD/anxiety person so I just put it down to that. I didn't realise it had a name though! I shall Google it now.

MotherOfDragons90 · 19/04/2019 22:16

The motorway and the biting one really resonate with me too! Often think about clamping teeth down on DH and not letting go Blush

Glad it isn’t just me.

lovesagobletofwine · 19/04/2019 22:17

it's an intrusive thought!!! i get them loads especially when driving near cliff edges 😳

Sidalee7 · 19/04/2019 22:17

Yes I totally get this - I was in a meeting the other day pouring some water into a glass and I had this over whelming urge to throw the jug of water over my colleagues! WTF?!!

73kittycat73 · 19/04/2019 22:18

I have this about anything made from terracotta. I just want to smash it! It was literally made to smash! Grin

OldAndWornOut · 19/04/2019 22:20

I sometimes think about saying things in public, such as "shut the fuck up!" to loud people.
I hope I never start to actually do it!

sockatoe · 19/04/2019 22:23

I get this, when I'm walking along a main road with someone. I often imagine pushing them into the road. Obviously I wouldn't, but the thought disturbs me. Glad I'm not alone though, so thanks for that

Utrecht · 19/04/2019 22:23

Since I was a child. I used to visualise myself opening the car door and jumping out whenever we were on motorways. When I boil a kettle I sometimes have the urge to pour the boiling water over my own hand.

Easterbunnynearlyhere · 19/04/2019 22:24

Driving my small car into a big vehicle..

camelfinger · 19/04/2019 22:25

I walked past a nice looking elderly lady the other day. I thought about punching her. Which I obviously wouldn’t do, nor want to do. But I just thought it. How horrible.

User24689 · 19/04/2019 22:25

I get this loads. I ride a cargo bike with my two toddlers on board and often take them along a canal path to a nearby park. I always always imagine just turning the handlebars and riding down the bank into the canal. I imagine how I would manage to unbuckle them under the water to get them out, it's terrifying.

GrandmaSharksDentures · 19/04/2019 22:25

I'm so glad it's not just me. I have an urge to stick my head out of train windows when moving really fast. It's a horrible scary feeling

Utrecht · 19/04/2019 22:26

Oh, and yes, the shouting "fuck off" one, but for me this is when I'm at the theatre. I've never told anyone about the kettle thing before, I thought it was too odd. This thread is strangely reassuring - thank you OP.

Tilikum · 19/04/2019 22:26

Yes! I cross a bridge over a river every day on my way to work and the urge to throw my handbag into the water is strong, even though (obviously) I need my handbag and it has all my important things in.

There's a word for it, 'gremlin of mischief' or something.

OrangeJuiceandArmchairs · 19/04/2019 22:26

Yes. It's like an imp.

Pushing things, people etc. I'd never do it but yes totally get the urge.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 19/04/2019 22:26

Yes, on the underground I often picture the exact moment I'd jump for maximum impact. I expect a lot of people do it. Nothing to do with feeling depressed/suicidal

MrsXx4 · 19/04/2019 22:27

Yes I get this. My worst one is with my newborn. I just keep thinking of all different ways in which he could get hurt or dropped! Like waking down the stairs I imagine tripping and falling on top of him. Or walking him in the pram near the lake I will imagine letting go and watching the pram fall into the water. Driving I imagine a car crash and seeing him go flying out of his car seat! I get it all the time and it is horrendous!!
