Stupid bastard cunting WASPS!!!

I've been so looking forward to a break of some description.

Bugs/viruses back to back for ages, weather crap, working way too much. Just wanted a little garden break with the kids for Easter.

But the wasps are out in force, and they are huge buggers too.

I know you're supposed to stand still and they should go away, but they don't. We've got no food out, no juice, even taken the water out the the pool (as they were after the water), sprayed the garden with peppermint oil over the fences etc, and still they come.

I've never known them this early? I love Spring because the wasps aren't there. Every Spring we have picnics and garden time, and come August it's wasp time. But they're here now Sad

Anyone got any ideas to get rid of them? DH wants a wasp trap, but I'm not keen on attracting them, I want to repel them.

Yep I've seen loads today too! Hate the evil little bastards with their hate wings, arse weapons and git legs.

I always thought fluffy bees were cute until one stabbed me in the throat with its stinger.

I now run and and hide from anything buzzy.

agnurse · 19/04/2019 22:58

I, too, have heard that fake nests can deter them. Reportedly wasps are territorial and won't build a nest where there is a pre-existing one.

CalmDownPacino · 19/04/2019 23:01

I had a HUGE queen in the kitchen this morning. She wasn't remotely interested in me or the dog. There are lots around at the minute and they really will leave you alone, there's no reason for them to be interested in us at this time of year.

Wasps are vital for the ecosystem and, although it seems like they sting without provocation, most of the time they sting in defence.

Snowflakes1122 · 19/04/2019 23:02

No advice, but I’m sure I’m finding more of them than usual in my garden lately. The fuckers seem to gravitate towards me and just hover Angry

Solina · 19/04/2019 23:16

I don't like wasps but having been stung twice in a row last summer it isn't as bad as I remembered from my childhood. Hurts for a bit and then its fine after. Better than mosquitos I think as I end up itching for days on end with no relief for it...

PotterHead1985 · 20/04/2019 00:48

My local tidy towns shared this post on Facebook earlier that they got from someone else. There was a message on it about saving the bees (which I am all for by the way). However, methinks someone's a little off in the head. I wanted to scream 'that ain't no fckn bee!!!'

TheInebriati · 20/04/2019 09:34

How is hugging bees supposed to save bees? Plant some bee friendly flowers, sheesh.

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 20/04/2019 09:46

If I saw a bee as big as that I'd firebomb the fucker.

Also it is bullshit that wasps don't sting you if you stay still. And I have twice had one fly down my fucking top and sting me, the pervert stingy fucks.

TreadingThePrimrosePath · 20/04/2019 09:48

Wasps are not kind to bees, and beetles are more important as pollinators. So I plant my garden with insect-friendly plants and continue to zap wasps. Likewise I encourage spiders. Some of my carefully-nurtured arachnids are tough enough to tackle wasps.

Doggydoggydoggy · 20/04/2019 10:07

ALL creatures are important!
People need to stop with this notion that certain creatures need to be culled.
Leave everything alone for goodness sake!
Wasps are extremely important beneficial insects.
There is NO valid reason to kill them. Or anything else for that matter.
Leave well alone and things will find their own balance

PositivelyPeach · 20/04/2019 10:10

I hate wasps, but have successfully removed two queens from the house so far this year. As wasps go they were pretty docile. Certainly not as aggressive as I'm used to.

Probably not a coincidence but DH removed a very small nest from the shed last week.

I was equally horrified and amazed at the thing.

Off to google wasp traps....

Hearthside · 20/04/2019 11:56

I hate them with a passion Sad 10yrs ago we had a wast nest and they were in my living room and my bathroom. They terrify me as wherever they sting me swells up like a balloon. We got the council to kill the nest , felt a bit mean but had think of my DC's and my animals who were at serious risk being stung. I had one in my car Thursday but luckily spotted it before i set off driving .Now that is my idea of a nightmare one in the car when i driving.

Hearthside · 20/04/2019 12:01

Doggydoggydoggy yes all animal's are important i agree .But here's the thing you have a wast nest in your eves right next your bathroom window above your back door into the garden. Now all those wasps in that nest .I must had least 20 in my bathroom and more in my living room in middle of summer heat .So i leave them to stay when i had them very small DC's and pets. Nope not happening. I get what you are saying but sometimes it just is not possible.

cricketmum84 · 20/04/2019 12:08

I remember when I first had my son, I was only 20 and we lived alone in a lovely little cottage. We got 2 wasps nests one year, one under the eaves by the back door and one by the front door. I am petrified of them and every time we wanted to go out it was like running a wasp gauntlet. Took my landlord ages to get someone out to deal with them. Worst summer ever.

Doggydoggydoggy · 20/04/2019 12:24

That certainly does sound horrific hearthside and your right, in circumstances like you describe where they are in totally the wrong place and putting others at risk it is regrettably probably wise to kill.

But, a huge proportion of people deliberately kill wasps (and other bugs) utterly needlessly.
People who put fatal wasp traps in their garden for instance.
Or those who immediately smack and squish a single wasp on sight.

I don’t know enough about wasps to know if what I am about to say is completely accurate, but I would also argue, that possibly if we were more considerate to design our gardens and public spaces with insects in mind maybe they wouldn’t nest in eaves and the like in the first place?

fblake · 20/04/2019 12:30

@Absofrigginlootly I agree, I hate ticks, they scare the life out of me ☹️ they're so creepy!

aprilshowers12 · 20/04/2019 12:43

Are you absolutely sure they’re wasps? All I’ve seen around are lots of masonary bees which look very wasp like but don’t sting. I didn’t think wasps were out until late summer

Thisisthelaststraw · 20/04/2019 13:10

We just had a guy round to remove one from our attic. He said it was empty and now I’m thinking maybe we should have left it if it would have stopped others building a nest.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/04/2019 18:19

Queen wasps are definitely out now.

I don't kill anything I don't have to. Just relocated some ants and a wood louse that were wandering around the house (is it invite your insect friend in to squat week?) But I do strongly object to them building nests in my house.

EdWinchester · 20/04/2019 18:25

I saw a queen in my sitting room today. I caught it in a glass and put it outside.

I don't like them but wouldn't kill them (apart from the fucker that stung me 3 times on my eyelid). They serve a purpose in the ecosystem. We'd be overrun with other insects without wasps.

EdWinchester · 20/04/2019 18:27

We had 3 wasps' nests in our gables last summer. We didn't get them removed and they didn't cause a problem. Some years they seem to be more of a pest than others.

mummmy2017 · 20/04/2019 18:32

Get a plastic bottle cut the top off to make a funnel. Add cider vinegar or sugar water,.
Place the funnel back in the top,. And leave the trap a bit away from the table...
This is what we use at festivals ..

mirime · 20/04/2019 18:52

I think the difference between masonry bees and wasps is pretty obvious.

images.app.goo.gl/HBG3d4q6wLTHhbu2A

Bees are beautiful.

Wasps look evil with evilly patterned faces and the evil looking patterns die their backs. I can't even touch a picture of one. I wouldn't go out of my way to harm them though, they have their place in the ecosystem. I mainly go out of my way to avoid them.

AwdBovril · 20/04/2019 19:42

I saw a queen wasp by my house this afternoon, scouting for a location. Massive bloody thing.

thenightsky · 20/04/2019 20:14

I said to DH the other day 'I can hear a helicopter overhead'. Turned out to be a massive wasp in the hall way, just hovering slowly over the hinge of the door. Looking for a gap I guess.

They terrify me and I keep a whippy swatter in every room to whack them straight out of the air like playing badminton. And I always wear thick soles around the house too... don't want to tread on one!

I did read somewhere that the best way to keep them out of the garden and away from your house is to hang a fake nest under your eaves or in a tree or from a gutter. I can't remember where I saw the fake ones for sale, but I'll have a google.
