I've been so looking forward to a break of some description.

Bugs/viruses back to back for ages, weather crap, working way too much. Just wanted a little garden break with the kids for Easter.

But the wasps are out in force, and they are huge buggers too.

I know you're supposed to stand still and they should go away, but they don't. We've got no food out, no juice, even taken the water out the the pool (as they were after the water), sprayed the garden with peppermint oil over the fences etc, and still they come.

I've never known them this early? I love Spring because the wasps aren't there. Every Spring we have picnics and garden time, and come August it's wasp time. But they're here now Sad

Anyone got any ideas to get rid of them? DH wants a wasp trap, but I'm not keen on attracting them, I want to repel them.

SadOtter Grin love these descriptions of wasp dynamics.

Probably outing as its all over my facebook but..

I keep having large wasps trying to get IN bed with me (every day this week).. not buzzing round the room, actively trying to get under the covers with me!

I am NOT a nest site!

TheInebriati · 19/04/2019 16:13

I didn't know those bastards couldn't sting! There are 3 nests and my garden is in the middle, in late summer they are drawn like, er, wasps to honey to the strimmer cord.

gluteustothemaximus · 19/04/2019 16:14

WiddlinDiddlin That sounds AWFUL Shock

They’re such dickheads. Do wasps actually serve a useful purpose? I feel so worried for bees but also that I would quite happily applaud wasp extinction.

Jobberknoll · 19/04/2019 16:15

Definitely scared of wasps. Never been stung though. Did get stung by a bee on my bum when I was dozing though Blush

Raspberrytruffle · 19/04/2019 16:16

Yanbu op! I'm a grown women shit scared of the buggars, we live rurally so I cant open the windows without having my lounge full of them or flies, window netting is the way to go! Stops the buggars getting in 🙈

Me too Grin

Put an open pot of jam in the furthest corner of the garden away from where you are. They'll all go there. My mum used to do this when we were kids at picnics etc. Worked every time.

sadkoala · 19/04/2019 16:22

Do not like wasps AT ALL.
Last year I saw one monster wasp aggressively hitting/flying into the glass on the window trying to get back out is suppose. The little thuds were so loud I could hear it from the other room Shock
I felt a bit bad and was going to get it in a glass and take it out like you would a spider as DS was a bit upset and always adamant about me helping them, I've reluctantly done it before once or twice.

But imagine my horror upon realising that the fucker was actually wasps steroid laden cousin the fucking hornet!
Nearly smashed the glass into my own face as I recoiled to get the hell out of the room.

Beamur · 19/04/2019 16:23

Wasps get a bad rap. They're actually highly beneficial insects. But they are indeed arseholes.
Fake nests are supposed to be quite effective and sugar lures will work better later in the summer.

FawnDrench · 19/04/2019 16:26

I'll raise you then - We had a wasp in the utility room on Tuesday that was the size of a very aptly named Focke-Wulf Fw-61 helicopter - and sounded twice as loud...

gluteustothemaximus · 19/04/2019 16:29

Oh no, not hornets. Another level of terrifying.

Ugh. Seen the queens around my property already, hideous big ugly stingy nasty fuckers that they are. A timely reminder for me that it's a good time to place my annual en-masse waspinator order, and to hang them liberally around the house and garden. Hate these insects - they ruin my summer.

origamiunicorn · 19/04/2019 16:32

I didn't see a single wasp last year. Think Beast from the East killed them off. We've had a mild Winter so I guess there's gonna be loads this Summer. They're already out in force and I hate it. I have an irrational fear of them as they seem to drawn to me and like to constantly hover by my face. Confused

WaspWhisperer · 19/04/2019 16:35

Right I've name changed for this as you are all going to think I'm completely bonkers (Probably am Smile)
Just tell the wasps nicely but in a no nonsense Mary Poppins type way to be a good wasp go away & play somewhere else. Don't forget to say please & thank you.
It works for me (maybe it's my death stare)
Should I hire myself out?

spinn · 19/04/2019 16:46

Get a fake wasp nest and put it up - they are territorial so won't go in places where they think other wasps live.

We have one at the front and back of the house all year and it makes a huge difference to the number of wasps

Mumsymumphy · 19/04/2019 16:54

Wasps are the devil in a black and yellow jacket. Nasty stripey bastards.

I got stung in my armpit when I was 15, in the middle of the night, and it swelled up so much I had to sleep with my arm in the air. That was fun.

Thought I had a motorbike revving its engine in my house once - no it was a hornet.

Hang a stuffed paper bag from a clothes line so they think a nest is already there. As they are territorial they will buzz off elsewhere.

Ooooooouch · 19/04/2019 16:56

I just got stung on BOTH thighs driving back from what had already been a pretty stressful day. Just the icing on the turd I needed - fuckers!!

Sux2buthen · 19/04/2019 17:09

When we got the Christmas decorations in from the shed we found ourselves inundated with huge dopey wasps. I guess they were hibernating or something, big buggers though

PotterHead1985 · 19/04/2019 17:10

I hear ya. Every time I go out in my back garden the past couple days this big nasty ass one comes bizzzzzzing round my head. Like fup off. I am also allergic so....

gluteustothemaximus · 19/04/2019 17:21

Have ventured out there now, the sun is not so hot and so far so good. Will keep them out until late to enjoy a bit more fun time Grin

gluteustothemaximus · 19/04/2019 17:22

DH got stung in the face one year, right by his eye. His whole face and eye swelled up and he looked like Rocky Balboa. It was horrible.

MrsBertBibby · 19/04/2019 17:34

Wasps are important pollinators, and also predate huge numbers of garden pests like aphids and caterpillars to feed their young.

You'd know about it pretty fast if wasps vanished.
